On November 27th, Princess Tsuguko and Japan UNICEF held a workshop for 2nd year students at Midorioka Junior High School in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture. The school has participated in UNICEF donations as part of "international education." Princess Tsuguko discussed the conditions other children face around the world and UNICEF's activities. There was some wonder among the students at meeting royalty but no one brought it up as Tsuguko was visiting as a UNICEF staff member, not an official public service.

Princess Tsuguko spoke on various topics including the activities of UNICEF and the difference between the Japan Committee for UNICEF and UNICEF, and the reason why she first became involved in international cooperation. She introduced stories of UNICEF field staff, showing to the audience a ready-to-use therapeutic food, peanut butter flavored Plumpy’nut, which is distributed by UNICEF in areas of need. Also, a short video was shown on the lives of the children in developing countries and Syrian child refugees, to visually appeal to the audience. The Princess welcomed questions from the students at the end, and students asked her many questions, such as “Are there any cases where rationed items are not received by the target population or are used in an unintended way, and are there any measures to guard against such risks?” or “In a case that water wells or toilets are set up, are there any mechanisms created for local residents to control these?” The Princess graciously answered all of these questions one by one.

Thanks, Prisma!

Perhaps it is an issue of translation, but it confuses me that a visit announced by the IHA and involving a public lecture and a meeting with foreign royalty is described as "private". What is the difference then between a private and a public visit?

I believe the IHA considers an overseas visit official/public service when formally invited by a foreign government.

A trip for Girton College's 150th anniversary, plus a visit to her patronage BirdLife International and what appears to be a private meeting with the Wessexes apparently doesn't count as an official/public visit.

Princess Hisako's visit to Russia last year for the World Cup was probably "private" as well. IHA stressed she travelled in her capacity as honorary president of Japan Football Association and wouldn't meet key Russian figures.

Some of last year's visits:
CP Naruhito - France - official
Princess Mako - Brazil - official
Princess Hisako - Russia - private
Princess Tsuguko - East Timor - private
Princess Nobuko - Italy - private
