Dolphin show at World Cup sailing event sparks backlash: The Asahi Shimbun
[...] At the Sept. 9 opening ceremony of the World Cup Series Enoshima on Enoshima island, dolphins performed jumping tricks in front of sailors and other parties at Enoshima Aquarium near the event venue.

Some competitors from abroad, who are opposed to the capture and display of dolphins, expressed their dismay on Twitter.

“Couldn’t be more embarrassed with what I’m witnessing. We are sailors, and apparently a ‘green sport,’” said a tweet by a competitor [...]

Hirobumi Kawano, president of the Japan Sailing Federation and chairman of the organizing committee, said the dolphin show was intended to be “a surprise that symbolizes Enoshima.”

“We received many positive responses, but it is a sensitive issue on which people from different countries have different opinions,” Kawano said. “We would like to apologize to those who were offended by the show.”

World Sailing, an organizer of the World Cup series and the international governing body for the sport, said in a statement that it was “disappointed” with the performance.

“All content in Opening and Closing Ceremonies of World Sailing events must be pre-approved by World Sailing and no such approval was given nor sought from the Organizing Committee for the show,” the statement read.

According to tradition, Japan suffered a serious plague and Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi suggested Emperor Saga (786 - 842) personally copy the Buddhist document. Emperor Saga did and the epidemic ended.

The Heart Sutra is displayed to the public once every 60 years and is kept at the Shingyōden hall of the temple. The handwritten sutra will be open until November 30th.

Princess Hisako's got much energy. I'm exhausted following Ayako wedding while she has a packed schedule in and outside of Tokyo the week of her daughter's wedding.

Bit of old news: I discovered Noriko Senge attended BirdLife Spring Gala 2018 at the Ritz-Carlton in Osaka on March 9. Noriko was a "Spring Gala Steering Committee Member." Princess Hisako delivered her speech via phone patch because she was sick with influenza.

Education and Literacy : Corporate Profile of The Yomiuri Shimbun
Aiming to improve the standards of Japanese education, we founded the Yomiuri Kyoiku Sho (education prize) in 1952. This award is conferred on educators and organizations that actively engage in research or teaching in primary and secondary schools and kindergarten and nursery environments. We also host nationwide contests in essay composition, English-language debate, and scientific research for children and students. Of these, our English debate competition for middle schoolers has continued since 1949 as an effort to improve students' English speaking abilities and foster in them an awareness of international friendship. Princess Hisako of Takamado is president emeritus of the competition.
