Emperor, empress return home after trip to Europe

(Kyodo) _ Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko returned to Japan on Saturday after an eight-day trip to Ireland and Norway.

Arriving on a government aircraft at Haneda airport, the couple was greeted by other members of the imperial family and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. They left Japan on May 7 for Ireland and then moved to Norway on May 10. The couple met royal family members as well as private citizens in these countries.

Japan's Princess Sayako to wed in November

Princess Sayako, the only daughter of Japan's emperor and empress, will get married in November, palace officials said Wednesday.

Sayako, 36, was engaged in March to 40-year-old city hall employee Yoshiki Kuroda.

Their wedding will take place at Tokyo's Imperial Hotel on Nov. 15, according to the Imperial Household Agency, which would not release other details.

The couple will wed in a Shinto ceremony in the presence of the emperor and the empress, said Japan's public broadcaster NHK and Kyodo News agency.

Japanese had long been speculating about when Sayako, the last of the imperial couple's three children to remain single, would marry.

The couple announced their engagement in December following a discreet two-year courtship. Sayako and Kuroda knew each other as children and were reunited at a palace tennis party organized by Sayako's brother, Prince Akishino.

The law dictates that Sayako, as a woman born in the imperial family, will become a commoner after she marries, moving out of the palace and losing her royal title.

Shinto is Japan's native religion.

Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda flew to Japan and South Korea on Sunday with the aim of broadening bilateral relations. His goal is to present Slovakia as a country undergoing reform, but a trustworthy partner for economic and business cooperation. While in Japan, Mikulas Dzurinda is scheduled to meet Japanese Emperor Akihito as well as Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. Slovakia has been posting a passive balance in foreign trade with both Japan and South Korea. Dzurinda's visit will focus on improving trade with both countries.

Portuguese president to visit

TOKYO — Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio will visit Japan for the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi Prefecture next week and hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, officials of the Portuguese Embassy in Tokyo said Monday.

Sampaio is also scheduled to meet with Emperor Akihito, Empress Michiko and Crown Prince Naruhito, and give a presentation on the Portuguese language at a university in Kyoto, the officials said. (Kyodo News)
