Is Masako really too ill to attend the exhibition or was it the Imperial Household Agency's decision that she not attend? I don't trust the IHA to act in Masako's best interest.

Very interesting question, Mandy. I have similar doubts. Does anyone have any idea?

But i think the Japanese Royals are always have the same style of hats.Especially Empress Michiko, although she has great amount of hat but all the same style only different colours! They do not have many different styles of hats like the Western.

MASAKO ABSENT FROM IMPERILA VISIT TO WORLD EXPO!
24 MARCH 2005
It was a family outing for the Japanese royals on Wednesday when they attended the opening of the 21st century's first World Exposition in the country's industrial heartland.
Empress Michiko – who has been recently indisposed - accompanied her husband Emperor Akihito to the event. However, although Crown Prince Naruhito joined his parents, his wife, Princess Masako, who has been suffering a stress related illness for over a year, was once again absent.
At the opening, the imperial guests were treated to a concert performed by both human and robotic musicians. Indeed, robots play a key role at the Expo, acting in roles as diverse as intelligent road sweepers to security guards programmed to detect intruders.
Easily the star attraction, however, is the uncannily human Actroid. Resembling a 20-something woman, the robot acts as an information service, answering questions in four languages - Japanese, English, Korean and Chinese.
The imperial family also introduced to a much older participant, an 18,000-year-old mammoth, the frozen remains of which were discovered in Siberia, and which is billed as the most successful attempt yet to excavate and display almost the full animal.
The Nagakute World Expo, which traces its roots to the 1851 Great Exhibition in London and features displays by 121 countries showing the link between technology and the environment, will run for six-months and is expected to draw 15 million visitors.

I haven't checked up on the JApanese royal family for a while, I was just wondering if Princess Masako is well and fine again? She looks good in the pictures attending Princess Sayako's engagement ceremony! ^__^

Emperor, empress to visit Norway, Ireland in May
(Kyodo) _ Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will visit Ireland and Norway next month, accompanied by an entourage led by former Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, the government said Tuesday.
The emperor and empress will leave Tokyo on May 7 and arrive in Dublin later that day. They will arrive in Oslo on May 10 and visit Norway's first capital of Trondheim. The couple are scheduled to return to Japan on May 14.
Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon Magnus will formally welcome the imperial couple on behalf of King Harald V who recently underwent heart surgery. The prince visited the Aichi Expo on Monday and said he is looking forward to meeting Emperor Akihito and Express Michiko in Norway.
Japan and Norway are marking the centennial of diplomatic relations this year. Irish President Mary McAleese visited Japan and met with the emperor and empress last month.
