Japan's Emperor Akihito (2nd R) and Empress Michiko (R) waves to well-wishers with Crown Prince Naruhito (2nd L) and Crown Princess Masako during a public appearance for New Year celebrations at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo January 2, 2011.

Maybe you can't recognize Imperial familly's face by this whole version photo,
It's amazing that 95year's old prince Mikasa still attends a public appearance for New Year celebrations .

Thanks for the photos!
It is always great to see the Japanese Imperial family and its extended members.

The Japanese tradition is not to express the thoughts and intentions through words. Anyone who sees these photos now know for sure that "the heir decision" has been made by the Emperor and the Crown Prince gave his consent. The place of the Princess Toshi-no-miya is aside her cousins the Akishinos. She is the Imperial princess but not the heir. The Princess Aiko is loved, she is cherished, but she is not who will inherit the Throne after the Crown Prince Naruhito.
It's obvious now, and the Imperial family has the cordial consent on the matter.
The setting of annual photos remains the same: the same room. That is why I observed that the photos appeared to be standard. I did notice that Princess Aiko joined her cousins this year and Prince Hisahito was near his grandparents and uncle.

Yes, it's nice to see her in something besides cream or beige, which she seems to wear a lot of. The fabric looks exquisite as well. Very pretty.

Japan's Imperia palace hosts poetry reading January 14th, 2011

Japan's emperor recalled planting birch seedlings on his golden anniversary, while his wife expressed the joy of seeing the first leaves of spring, during an ancient poetry reading ceremony Friday at the imperial palace.
The unique and colorful ritual, which also includes selections from tens of thousands of entries from around the world, is one of the biggest events of the year for Japan's royal household. It is broadcast live across the nation, and has been an imperial tradition since the 13th century.
This year's topic was "leaves."
The poems were chanted by officials dressed in morning coats before members of the imperial family, professional poets, commoners whose works were selected and foreign dignitaries. Crown Princess Masako, wife to Japan's imperial heir, was absent.
The solemn reading was held in a hall at the imperial palace reserved for the most important ceremonies of the year. - Full article

i hope many of them can stay safe and keep away from the coast the most they can, i hope everything is okay with the imperial family.

Since the radiation level in Tokyo (150 miles away from Fukushima) is not critical, there is no need to evacuate JIF from Tokyo to Kinki region.

Now I don't know where to put this because I was looking for a General Questions thread - but couldn't find one.

There was news this morning that Japan's PM had resigned this morning/last night and he is the 5th PM to do so in 5 years. What I wonder is if the Emperor has any role in appointing a new PM, does he choose the PM? Does the PM have to ask to form a government like in the UK? Or how does it work?

No, the Emperor is not involved in choosing a new PM in any way.
The PM is designated by the DIET (the parliament of Japan) from among its members, and must enjoy the confidence of the House of Representatives to remain in office.
The Emperor appoints the new PM.
More info about the PM of Japan see here.
