Emperor Hirohito in Russian film
In Sokurov's series about 20th-century tyrants, this time crucial days from the life of Emperor Hirohito, just before and after the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II. Issey Ogata is phenomenal as the Emperor who looks and acts like Chaplin, the soundtrack is in experience and the special effects are especially beautiful. And the film is occasionally funny too to top it all.............. http://www.filmfestivalrotterdam.com...5825&year=2006 Photo from IFFR |

Allies offered Emperor Hirohito ideas to improve postwar image, papers show
English language documents offering recommendations on how Emperor Hirohito should behave in the early postwar period have been found in the Gakushin library together, the Mainichi has learned. Among the recommendations Allied Occupation authorities made to Emperor Hirohito were to come in direct contact with ordinary citizens, attend musical recitals and learn English. Emperor Hirohito had been regarded as a living god in Japan until the end of World War II, but renounced his divinity on Jan. 1, 1946......................... http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/nation...na001000c.html |

Why Japanese will be last to see Alexander Sokurov's film on Emperor Hirohito
The third in a trilogy of films by the Russian director Alexander Sokurov that has already depicted pivotal moments in the lives of Hitler and Lenin, The Sun dramatises Japan's defeated wartime emperor Hirohito's fateful meeting with General Douglas MacArthur. Such is the sensitivity in Japan concerning the depiction of the imperial family on film that a movie that premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2005, and was released in the UK last summer, has only lately found a Japanese distributor, who will be giving The Sun a limited Tokyo release "some time later this year"............................ http://enjoyment.independent.co.uk/f...icle344368.ece |

Emperor, empress host garden party for 2,000 dignitaries
Around 2,000 celebrities, diplomats and other guests attended the annual spring garden party on Thursday hosted by Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko at Akasaka Imperial Gardens in Tokyo. The 72-year-old emperor had postponed some official duties since Tuesday because he had a 37-degree fever, but attended Thursday's party after his temperature fell to the 36-degree level, according to Imperial Household Agency officials................Crown Princess Masako, who is apparently still suffering from a stress-induced illness, and Princess Kiko, wife of the emperor's second son Prince Akishino, who is five months pregnant with her third child, were both absent from the party, but the emperor's cousin Prince Tomohito of Mikasa, who was discharged from hospital in March after an operation for throat cancer, managed to put in an appearance. http://asia.news.yahoo.com/060427/kyodo/d8h8b1k80.html |

I like the Empress's houmongi with that soft pink and beige pattern. I wish we could get more close-ups of her when she's wearing kimono.
