I wish we could see what Meghan wore under the coat too. ? ETA: Actually someone did earlier post a glimpse of the dress underneath the coat: https://78.media.tumblr.com/546243ac045f5eeb1d107ce3b220d2c4/tumblr_p1inlyTjxE1vkdo6xo1_540.png
I wonder when or whether Meghan will have a lady-in-waiting to help with her wardrobe and on tours. Meghan's friend and stylist Jessica Mulroney is surely helping her right now. However, since Jessica is based in Canada, I'm sure other style and fashion industry experts will be working with Meghan. She is, of course, already ahead of the game with her own knowledge and experience with fashion and beauty.

I've seen a couple of posters mention they feel Meghan played it safe with her Christmas Day attire. I have to laugh though because there was all the unnecessary brouhaha over the engagement photo couture dress a few days ago when I suppose Meghan didn't "play it safe." And remember when her look at the Invictus Games was deemed too casual? ;) As far as I've seen, IMO Meghan pretty much nails her look every time out. Check out the Reitmans fashion conversation video I posted previously in which Meghan expresses her view of fashion. She says, "Fashion should be fun!" And she advises to not be afraid to try something new or different as long as you feel comfortable and the look is right for you, your body, and for the occasion.

In that respect, I think Meghan has been fairly spot-on. As Meghan said in the fashion advice clip, "You have to go with your gut." Meghan will supplement her gut feelings with the advice she receives, especially re protocol and coordinating wardrobe looks with the other royal ladies, but then she hopefully will also continue to remain true to who she is and to what she likes. Meghan has said that she prefers wearing monochrome looks, and she doesn't normally wear a lot of color. She's kind of classic and laid back with an edge. I've seen her wear a number of coats before in white, cream and beige, so her Christmas Day look is probably comforting to her. I found it classic and stylish, especially with the detailing along the coat sleeves, and I think the hat is perfect. I'm not that enamored of the purse, but it works well with the outfit.

BTW, I'm not intending to dress you or anyone else down with my comments @FashionMaven. ;) I always look forward to reading your thoughtful posts. You add so much to the conversation. Thanks. :candycane:

Here are views of some of the similar light-colored coats Meghan has enjoyed wearing:

So when I said Meghan played it relatively safe - I wasn’t thinking about the colors she chose - she always chooses colors like that and she’s a tone on tone fan, like me.

I think she played it safe with a more demure hat vs a “sharp” hat. I do like the hat more and more - it’s got a modern flair - but the shape of it was less “sharp” than I wanted to see. But if she’d gone too sharp with the hat she might have faced “you’re upstaging the royals” criticism.

But everything else was true to her style. The purse, the coat, the dress, shoes, colors - totally her style and totally in line with what she usually wears.

I just remembered something. Meghan must really like this coat, because she owns it in green as well. We saw it in one of the paparazzi shot of her getting into a cab in Toronto while her and Harry were still dating. The woman doesn't just have a number of tan coats, she has a lot of coats period. Which as a coat person, I absolutely love it. I often find myself getting drawn into another coat I didn't need because I just love statement coats so much. Her most photographed coat brands to date are probably Sentaler, Line the Label, Mackage, and a couple of Smythe for more long wool/trench coats. In terms of wool coat, I don't think I've seen much repeats from her. For casuals, she tends to stick with Barbour and Soia & Kyo. These tend to get repeats.

This coat in green version.

Thank you for bringing this up! I love it that Meghan has so many statement coats - I have multiple coats now. Probably not as many as Meghan but at least 10 coats. And I can’t even count how many jackets. I probably need to clean out my closet, lol. Though I wear them all each year. Coats in a range of colors are necessary for tone on tone dressing.

Sometime in 2008-9 or so statement coats were all the fashion mags talked about and I became obsessed with having a ton. Maybe Meghan did too.

The wrong coat can completely destroy a look.

The #MeghanEffect is alive at @sentaler.

They have renamed the wide-collar coat she wore yesterday “The Meghan”

The outfit REALLY looks better in motion. Curtsy starting at 2:30.
That was such a nice video thanks for posting. I live Meghan's hair and it looks like everyone gets along, she looked so happy.

Meghan really knows how to dress for Sandringham - she looks stylish without being overly glamorous or formal. Just right!

They are doing the same thing as Line the Label. I’m just wondering what they would do if she wore another coat in different style? If I were Meghan, I’d mess with them a little by doing that. They can’t have two coats named the Meghan

I find at least some of their commentary makes a couple points.

I think Meghan does, the way she walks/stands etc, at times come across as 'actress-y' but I think in time she will shed some of this.

I do think we are going to see some very discussion worthy clothing choices in the years to come!

I never got the whole 'you stand hollywood' 'pose hollywood' 'dress hollywood' :ermm:

I don't see anything greatly different about how she stands. Other then some nerves which is highly understandable considering the event and stress. Its a matter of personal style. I don't think she needs to become some Kate clone in stance or even dress, to be the 'proper british princess'.

Meghan looks nice and she's doing her best to fit in, what more can people want. The look that some describe as 'actress-y' comes from being insecure/overwhelmed in the situation because it's new and the eyes of the world are on her, it will go soon once Meghan has adaped to the circus.

I'm rather late with my comments, but I thought Meghan looked lovely on Christmas day - I particularly like the accessories she chose and would have loved to have see what I believe is a burgundy velvet outfit underneath.

I hope Meghan continues with her own fashion choices and won't feel pressured to change anything about it too dramatically. She has her own style and tastes and this adds interest when we see her out and about.

A magazine my mum gave me praises Meghan for wearing boot-cut jeans, even though these are out of fashion nowadays. I have to agree. I have always worn boot-cut trousers throughout their period in the fashion wilderness. I just think they are more flattering than skinny trousers or jeans. (Especially for women with my body shape of slim legs, bum and hips and overweight in the torso, so it balances me out and makes me look less like a lollipop lol).

Posts about posture, yoga or the like have been removed as off-topic!

As your name suggests, you know a lot about fashion, so I love hearing from you @FashionMaven. ? I was commenting generally about posts indicating Meghan was 'playing it safe,' with her Sandringham church-going attire (which I found ironic since she had been so heavily criticized in some quarters for her romantic and edgy couture dress for the engagement photo). I was not so much specifically citing your post. Though thanks for clarifying what you meant regarding 'playing it safe.'

Everyone was curious to see Meghan's hat style since the younger generation of today rarely wear formal hats. I think it's understandable for Meghan not to go too dramatic and edgy with an unaccustomed for her 'hat look.' As well, it was smart for her to be more demure, classic and understated in her color choices for her first important public outing with the main members of the immediate royal family. It could just be that I don't know enough to be discerning when it comes to fashion. But I liked Meghan's look immediately, hat included. To me, the cap-like hat looks perfect on Meghan.

What would connote more 'sharp' in your estimation? I'd love to know how Meghan and her stylist, Jessica (if that's who advised Meghan) decided on this particular hat style. Perhaps Meghan simply spoke with hat specialists along with other advisers. And Philip Treacy was deemed the go-to milliner for a first-timer!

It's obvious that Meghan is someone who is very intriguing to watch regarding her style choices and the clothes she wears. And now that she's joining the royal family, the interest has ratcheted up. I think it was there already for people who knew her or found out about her, even before she met Prince Harry. Meghan has such flair and personality, and she's gorgeous to boot.

I see what you mean. Lainey said it aswell. She looks like she is trying her best, clothes wise and behaviour wise. A lot of thought goes into the details of her very matchy outfit and the way she carries herself and who can really blame her? It's an entirely new environment with it's own etiquette. She needs to shed that, just like Kate did. With time.

Meghan looks nice and she's doing her best to fit in, what more can people want. The look that some describe as 'actress-y' comes from being insecure/overwhelmed in the situation because it's new and the eyes of the world are on her, it will go soon once Meghan has adaped to the circus.

Regarding the 'Hollywood actress' references, I think you are right generally in your response, except that the 'actressy' criticisms you are responding to are mostly a bit nitpicky in any case. Plus, I wouldn't say that Meghan is necessarily 'insecure,' and not even too 'overwhelmed.' I believe she's been learning the royalty ropes for awhile now, in addition to juggling a demanding long-term relationship while completing her Suits commitments. And she still comes off as being very elegant and at ease with others and with herself. She clearly was a bit nervous just before the curtsey, apparently because she wanted to get it right.

In significant and important ways, I think Meghan having been an actor is an asset for her as she becomes a member of the royal family. She clearly has shown some signs of normal nerves in stepping out with Harry since the engagement announcement. But due in part to her training as an actor, I think she's handling it all rather well. And Meghan's style choices for church at Sandringham were fine. She certainly looks more appropriate for the occasion than a couple of other royal ladies. But in general, everyone looked good and in great spirits too.

Again some of the Meghan commentary can probably be attributed to over-excitement as well as OTT interest right now in following her and the clothes she wears. The royalty scene is new to Meghan, sure. But it's new to a lot of people who are now following the British royals more closely simply because of Meghan marrying Harry (and Meghan being a beautiful, uniquely stylish young lady). It might serve us well to remember that Meghan is on the inside in ways none of her critics and the general public will ever be. She knows a lot more than we do about what's going on at the moment behind palace walls. The royals never tell all their secrets. In some ways, that's partly what I find somewhat frustrating: Meghan can't be as open, outspoken and accessible as she has been before this romantic whirlwind began. She's obviously working on learning how to meld her style with what will be expected of her, which obviously takes time and experience. She's got access to the right help in this process too. ?

Even though Meghan grew up in Hollywood and became an actor, I think that Meghan is not 'of Hollywood' in terms of her style, her interests, her personality, and how she dresses. She does have some of the 'starlet' mannerisms that are detectable when she's been seen posing for cameras on red carpets. But in Hollywood, Meghan was actually a struggling actor. It's where she grew up and learned the audition ropes, but she had a bit of trouble finding solid success until Suits came along.

It was in cosmopolitan and culturally varied Toronto where Meghan began to stretch her wings and soar. On Suits, Meghan's style evolved as she met top designers and developed a more polished and pulled together look while still maintaining her own unique point of view and sense of self.

Here's another pic of the tan vest coat with black buttons, on Meghan's Instagram. It either looks like it was a modeling shoot wrap, or an on-location in New York Suits filming wrap:

I love this comment posted re the photo:
"You are by far the prettiest person I've ever seen."

I loved them!! But not the faux ones. It's the real deal for me or nothing. (I'm a bit of a snob I guess).

This is apparently the dress she was wearing... Club Monaco Tay Short-Sleeve Velvet Wrap Dress

Lovely choice.

And I agree, she does and should continue to have her own style. I've said it before but I too hope she doesn't feel pressure to start dressing like any other royal woman.

I do like that dress.

If that's the dress, Meghan wore a violet flower print version of it against what looks like a black background:

The dress I saw a flash of when her coat opened is a solid burgundy color.

LaRae

It's the burgundy velvet dress we all see! It's just the flash on the velvet that makes it Appear to be a print! Shiny velvet does that. It is a lovely dress.

Definitely burgundy velvet :flowers:

Though I don't get how they guess what dress she is wearing, by that tiny peak of fabric

Nor do I!! But I thank them for having that ability. :)

If the dress is the Club Monaco dress as posted above, that is one very beautiful dress for the holidays. Very feminine and soft looking, and I love the sleeves on it. The color is stunning on Meghan for it goes with her color and hair......want that dress for me....even with my red hair....

Love her scarf and coat today!

Meghan is wearing a coat by Smythe, scarf by Jigsaw, a Marks & Spencer sweater and Burberry trousers

LaRae

Not sure about the hair today...looks a bit messy.

A jumper from *GASP* Marks & Spencer ??

Their clothing has been denigrated for decades, so this must represent something of a 'lifeline'...
