Prince Carl Philip's Education/Work in Photography and Design

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
:previous: Perhaps that is the problem. He is not utilising his chosen field of education and instead seems to be dabbling in design and photography and remains passionate only about racing cars. All in all, he seems like the quintessential dilettante.

But perhaps there is an upside. When he was at University perhaps he studied something that was not his passion just to appear "serious", to try to fit in, so to speak. It may well have been that his hobby of photography was his real passion and it took age and maturity for him to have the guts to change course. Segueing quite effortlessly from photography into design is totally understandable, even logical.

As to racing cars? Well that really is no different from Polo or any other sport.

Carl Philip has given an exclusive interview to Damernas Värld about his design-comeback.

Finnish MTV quotes the interview:
Carl Philip and Oscar Kylberg are launching a new clothing line on March. Damernas Värld interviewed Carl Philip about designing, but also
about his private life. He has dated for a long time with Sofia Hellqvist and the swedes are impatiently waiting news about engagement and baby joy.
- I have already one sister, who has a child and another sister, who is waiting for her first one and this is nice, Carl Philip circles the question.
Estelle is now two years old, princess Madeleine's and Chris O'Neill's firstborn is due at the end of February.
But don't you long for children of your own, the reporter asked.
- Hahahah - What do you mean?, said Carl Philip.
Carl Philip is silent about his own planes but emphasizes the meaning little princess Estelle has for him.
- I try to be with at Estelle's life as much as possible. Of course it depends always on that how much I have for example work duties.

Carl Philip and Oscar Kylberg have designed textiles, which are sold in Åhlens department stores.

Carl Philip and Oscar Kylberg designed a new textile collection to Åhléns.
In an exclusive interview for Elle Decoration's next issue, they tell about the collection which will be launched at Åhlens on 10 September.
ELLE Decorations editorial director Karin Ohlsson-Leijon met Bernadotte & Kylberg on Djurgården in early summer.
Why did you choose to photograph the collection outdoors?
- We wanted to find an environment that felt natural for both Carl Philip and Oscar Kylberg and when we talked, they told over and over again about the inspiration they get from nature. We met in the park at Waldemarsudde and was fortunate to have a fantastic weather. Photographer Karin Björkquist and I had been there and looked a little before to see how the light fell and so. Oscar got a little ahead of Carl Philip, who had his little dog Siri with him. They were both very fond of the environment on one of the rocks in the park and while Karin Björkquist photographed them.
Then we had looked a good spot on Djurgården to photograph products and Carl Philip drove us there in his car. It was fun to know how committed they were all about shooting. They have worked a long time with the collection and feel strongly about it and that they both are photo people - they were very interested to see how the photographer works and were very involved in the shoot of the products.

Carl Philip and Oscar Kylberg have designed tableware Signum to Gustavsberg porcelain in honour of The king 40 years on the throne. Signum was commissioned by Erik Lallerstedt on the occasion of the King's forty years on the throne. At a spontaneous visit to Gondolen Erik Lallerstedt improvised together a salmon dish to the royal couple and it was later called Salmon Carl XVI Gustaf.

Since he has a diploma in Agricultural and Rural Management, he could have chosen that as a career.

I suppose he studied Agricultural and Rural Management because of the land estates he inherited, but I doubt he is passionate about farming, or even interested in it.

Silent pretty boy
Carl Philip, Prince of Sweden doesn't feel good. He smiles tormented, looking bored on his polished shoes and patters nervously back and forth. Yesterday, the 36-year old presented his latest designs at the Ambiente Fair. The bowls and vases of the collection, which he created with his business partner Oscar Kylberg, bear the name "Stockholm". Kylberg acts in these moments as uninvolved as his companion.
That a Royal Highness arrives in the main metropolis, is rather rare. We must therefore be at least happy that we may meet the young nobleman for ten minutes. He doesn't want to say anything. He whispers with Oscar, but to the people it is not addressed. The moderator speaks about the sophistication of the new "products". But of the 150 visitors who gathered to the hall, probably a few are interested. The views of the participants apply the blue-blooded pretty boy, not the beautiful blue tableware. There remains a short stay and Carl Philip seems relieved when it is over. Too bad, because actually he seems sympathetic.

Carl Philip wasn't very willing to pose for photos, at this article is an old photo.

Carl Philip and Oscar Kylberg told that the inspiration for the collection comes from the sea.
- Oscar has a summer home on the West Coast, and on the East Coast. The sea is what binds us together with Denmark, and then we got stuck on the color scale and the shifting feeling like the sea and water gives, says Carl Philip.
The series consists of a number of bowls and vases made of aluminum and enamel, a material that has not been quite popular since the 50's.
- But it is starting to appear more and more, says Carl Philip.
They began sketching the collection two years ago, and have worked extensively with watercolors and inks to bring out the right feeling. The series' design language pulls slightly to the Japanese, and there is perhaps a kinship.
- Both Scandinavian and Japanese design is all about to peel off and let the function speak, says Oscar Kylberg
The idea is that the bowls should be able to stand on the table as decoration, but it works to serve cold food in them too. The series is called Stockholm, and the collection Aquatic.
- We are working constantly. When I'm not on official mission, we sit in the studio and work. We sit opposite each other and send sketches over the desk, sometimes the other draws over what the other has done. Sometimes it's one that gives gas and the other that slows down or vice versa.
- We have never had a fight. We have basically the same view on things. In contrast, we laugh a lot, says Carl Philip.

I agree. CP is still trying to find what to do with his life. He loves racing and designing but he isnt very talented. I thought he would have stopped after the scandal.

I have understood that Bernadotte & Kylberg's textile collection for Åhléns last autumn has been quite popular. The spring collection will be soon available in Åhléns.
Last year Bernadotte & Kylberg designed in the spring and in the autumn collections of sports jackets to A-one, in the autumn textile collection to Åhléns and in December tableware Signum to Gustavsberg porcelain.

It only takes a quick glance at STOCKHOLM Aquatic-collection designed by Bernadotte & Kylberg for Stelton to realize that something innovative, unique and beautiful've seen the light. Differently shaped vases and bowls made of aluminum and enamel, exquisitely decorated in elegant design with inspiration from distinct shades of color, surfaces and patterns of the archipelago and the Baltic Sea.

At this blog someone writes that Bernadotte & Kylberg's bowls and vases remind finnish Marimekko's Weather Diary dishes from 2013, photos of that down at the blog. The colours are similar...

The only thing similar is that both have blobs of colour and are in the blue colour family. Both are hardly mind-shattering designs.

The plates from both sets look to me like someone has forgotten to wash their painting palette. The vase from 'Stockholm Aquatic' is the best piece from the collection.

Oscar Kylberg has given an interview to NWT, a newspaper from Värmland. Oscar is 42 years old, engaged with Maria Nilsson and they have son Walther, 20 months.

Oscar went to boarding school Lundsberg, and then to a British school in Saudi Arabia, where his family moved because of his parents' jobs. Then back to Sweden to boarding school in Sigtuna, and then on to economics studies at the University of Monaco.
- I sat on the economics lectures and discovered that I preferred drawing the teachers than listened to what they said.
He also made an excursion to the television world.
- I ran a web design agency in Halmstad, together with Carl Bennet, but we suffered like many others IT death around 2000.
In Halmstad time he met a program manager on MTV, Jonsered.
- I pitched an idea for him that was based on an interactive cartoon soap for the web. This was at ISDN-time. Nothing came of it but those I met needed a talented creator to a new company in Stockholm.
TV media inspired Oscar. He managed to sell a format into China. The format was a reality show about shopping, "Big time spender", and was a huge success for the Chinese CETV. Oscar lived in China a couple of years.
- It was "the ride of my lifetime". Completely crazy. We moved around to different cities where we recorded. The program was about educating consumers in what is quality when you shop. We had between 80 and 100 million viewers on the opening night.
After studying graphic design at Forsberg his design career really started in Sweden.

Through mutual friends he met Carl Philip, and the two hit it off immediately.
- I noticed that he had a passion for design and expression. He was a "diamond in the rough", had an incredible talent and great frame of reference. Had very strong ideas but did not know how to formulate them. It's fun to be there when someone finds his thing and the floodgates opened.
Working with the prince is no different to working with anyone. Three or four days a week they are in the studio fully focused on the job. They draw, look books, listen to music and have fun together. And they contribute equally to the final result.
- There is no prestige or hypocrisy between us. We owe each other the total sincerity. It's about respect.
Oscar describes the prince as a thoroughly nice person.
- Thoughtfulness is his strongest trait. If someone comes up to get an autograph or take pictures, he is always friendly. He can also say no in a friendly way.
He doesn't deny that the prince gives a lot of free publicity to their joint venture.
- It is clear that he is a "door opener". But it's a double-edged sword, if we would do something bad it would come out quickly.
Their PR agency has the paradoxical task of holding back the pressure from the media.
- Yes, a little bit so it is actually. We are giving very few interviews, and only together. This is an exception - but that's just because you come from Värmland.

They have primarily chosen to work with classic Swedish brands. The cooperation with porcelain factory Gustavsberg resulted in "Swedish animals".
- Gustavsberg is a progressive and enjoyable company. We wanted to take back the humor a bit and drew animals. It was sculpted, three dimensional.
The serie launched at the NK department store in Stockholm has been a great success.
Then they designed a series of sports jackets to A-one, which came out in 2014 and are sold on the MQ.
Last fall Åhléns launched a textile collection "Design by Bernadotte & Kylberg" consisting of rugs, cushions, throws, towels and bedding textiles.
- There is a difference between designing towels to make a great "centerpiece" of SEK 25 000. It is more difficult to succeed with a cheaper thing used every day that people only buy if they really like it.
The series sold in 77 Åhléns department stores have broken all sales records.
- After a week all was sold. They placed a new order immediately to have something for Christmas.
The pattern on the textiles is a version of a pattern they used at a charity project for Childhood Foundation. They designed a rug that was auctioned off at Bukowski.
- Childhood is like a parachute for the abused children. That's how we came up with it.

Now the focus is on the new series "Stockholm", bowls and vases for Stelton. The series will be sold worldwide. What Stelton cooperation will mean for the company future is difficult to say. But they have no plans to hire employees.
- We do not hurry. We work on long term. The most important thing is that it is we who make the stuff. There will never be 25 designers with us. We can think of bringing in students and collaborate with schools, perhaps, but it is we who do the design.

Bernadotte & Kylberg is about to launch a design collaboration with Hästens in Köping. Carl Philip and Oscar Kylberg visited for many hours Hästens last Wednesday.
- He looked at everything - mattresses, beds, everything we have, says Jonken Gustavsson, a warehouse worker at Hästens.
Since last Monday, the staff at Hästens knew about the royal visit but were strictly forbidden to reveal anything to the public. The prince specifically asked not to be photographed. He was very grateful that he could spend the day in Köping unnoticed.
- It was fun. Everyone has been excited all week, says Marcus Eriksson, who works in the warehouse.
After the duo had gone through Hästens' stock they had a meeting with the leaders. Besides Design by Bernadotte & Kylberg attended CEO Lasse Bååth, board member Jan Ryde, Marketing manager Karin Wikberg-Taylor and Production Manager Tobias Stople.
According to the newspaper the meeting went well and now Hästens hopes to write a contract with Bernadotte & Kylberg.
The article has an old photo, because Carl Philip didn't want to be photographed.
