Prince Carl Philip and Motor Racing

:previous: Well I gather that he is not yet the kind of driver that has the skill to work with his team to get a car set up that he can finish well/not spin out. Because that's what the job requires to do well in the sport.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm not a huge fan of comparison as a method of argument on the forums, either. :flowers:

The comparisons to his teammates do you mean? That actually happens quite often in carracing (take F1 for instance) if you and your teammate are f.i. consistently both last in races then we can assume that the car is probably technically not as good as the cars that often win races...
However, if you are consistently last and your teammate is consistently first, then the car and the team's technical skills are usually on par for both drivers...so then often the driver is at least part of the reason for finishing less good.

If in F1 your teammate finishes top3 often and you finish outside top 10 all the time...the team will likely put you in a lower division and you can try to work your way up again, another driver will take your place in the top team (this is what happened to Max Verstappen, who got promoted mid-season to one of the top cars and immediately won his first race)

but i digress.... ;)

I think everyone should follow their passion even when not everyone approve.

I love his designs - very modern and not for everyone. He & his partner have won couple of awards - i am sure that's more than a lot of people.

Accusations are just rumors and it's unfair to continue to judge him for that.

Obviously Carl Philip has more responsibilities compared to other racers - I will not expect him to be #1.

Agreed, but there seems to be the random thought - especially where Carl Philip is concerned - that one must continually end in the top regions in order to justify the performing of the sport. So, if it's taken literally, a tennis player who just enjoys the sport but doesn't necessarily have the qualifications to win or end in the top should better quit. Performing a sport just for fun seems to be off-limits.
Okay, that was simplified and I suppose the potential danger of this sport also plays a role though.
Especially now that he's a father. But his love for speed is inherited thus natural.

Unfortunately they were not just rumors. In 2013 a designer, Erik Eriksson said that it wasn't the prince the real author of a design object, I think it was a firescreen, for which CP claimed credit at a press conference. Eventually he had to remove his name as the designer and put that of the actual author, Erik Eriksson. It was really an embarassing experince for him.

Personally I agree with what other posters have said, he got where he is now thanks to his surname and not thanks to his talent or commitment.
Of course if he wants to continue on this path he is more than free to do so. The collaboration with Kylberg is a smart idea. From the moment CP has started to work with him things are much improved, he seems more serious and committed and has been able to avoid the kind of akward situation he experienced in the past.

The first part is prejudiced to say the least and can't be proven, talent is debatable but I think it's unfair to accuse him of not being committed. He doesn't seem lax or uninterested to me.

:previous:
Honestly neither the opposite can be proven, that he is where he is thanks to his talent.
I also think he is sincerely interested in design, but one thing is to be interested in something, another one is to have the skills to do interesting things in that field.
Anyway the collaboration with Kylberg has been a good idea and has had a good impact. From what I have read in articles posted on this board, their design projects have had positive results in terms of sales.
So maybe he is right in insisting on this path.

Just my two cents. A tennis player who is not very good, probably plays at a non pro level after taking a shot a a pro tour and failing. Unless someone is paying for all their costs to compete and they are willing to be beaten often. But that's a fairly grim prospect, spending one's days exiting in the first or second round week after week.

In auto racing, there are no elimination rounds. So, frankly it's not uncommon for less talented drivers to compete as long as they can afford to pay for their own teams and equipment.

With CP a lot of it for racing enthusiasts (and I am speaking as one of those) comes down to several things:

  • He's famous, good looking and brings cache and attention to the sport - that's a plus
  • He's not that talented and so if he is not funding his own team he is taking a seat away from some person that does have talent
  • If he's funding himself - he's just one of the many that do. As long as he is not a danger to others on the track, it's fine
That last is the sticking point. I've seen not prime drivers cause wrecks that take out otherwise innocent competitive drivers. I watched my brother pull a driver out of a burning car that got that way because another guy drifted into him, sliced open a fuel cell and turned him into a non-guided missile. The problem with going fast in a car is that you can do a lot of damage just because you are not great at it.

BTW, lots of non famous, not so talented people and even not so rich people are involved in motor sports. They participate at local tracks or club events, spend time dredging up money to fund another year or become car owners and mechanics.

I'm happy for any person, including CP, who can follow their dreams. I always wish him well. I hope he continues to rep for the sport even after he stops driving. He certainly has the race bug!

The Scandinavian Touring Car Championship heats up in the penultimate race weekend of 2016 at Solvalla in the Swedish capital Stockholm where Polestar Cyan Racing team-mates Richard Göransson and Robert Dahlgren are entangled in a tough title fight.
Prince Carl Philip left the previous race at Karlskoga with two points finishes, something he hopes to repeat this weekend.
”Solvalla is really a unique challenge and my goal for the weekend is to score points in both races, as we did at Karlskoga three weeks ago,” said Prince Carl Philip.

Prince Carl Philip had a mixed weekend where he made it to the Q2 session in qualifying for the first time this season, retired from the first race but managed to secure sixth position in the second race.
“Both races were chaotic and the first race ended too early for me. I was able to secure sixth position in the second race despite several incidents and I am pleased with that,” said Prince Carl Philip.

The close title fight of the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC) will be decided this weekend between Polestar Cyan Racing team-mates Richard Göransson and Robert Dahlgren in the season finale at Knutstorp, Sweden.
Prince Carl Philip will drive his fourth STCC season finale ever and returns to Knutstorp with fond memories from 2015 when he qualified sixth fastest in Q1, as well as claiming points in both races.
”We had a good season finale last year and I hope we can pick up on that for this year as well, ending this season on a strong note,” said Prince Carl Philip.

Prince Carl Philip had one of his strongest STCC races so far in the first race where he challenged Daniel Haglöf for fifth position, ultimately crossing the line in sixth position.
"I am really pleased with our pace in the first race, the car felt great and I was able to put pressure on the drivers in front of me. Massive congratulations to Richard for the title and a good fight by Robert, we really did get a thrilling season finale,” said Prince Carl Philip.

It was announced earlier this year that Carl Philip's team Polestar Cyan Racing will not continue to race in STCC where Carl Philip has raced, due to change in STCC regulations.

Yesterday Polestar Cyan Racing told at a press release, that Carl Philip's racing career continues in Swedish GT.

Prince Carl Philip will start his fifth racing season in 2017 for Polestar Cyan Racing in a new programme for the endurance series Swedish GT.
“I am delighted to continue racing in Sweden with Polestar Cyan Racing, the past four seasons have been eventful and very rewarding. I have raced in Swedish GT previously and this is a format that I very much enjoy,” said Prince Carl Philip.
Swedish GT runs together with the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship for five race weekends in Scandinavia where Prince Carl Philip will drive a Volvo S60 Polestar in the fastest class GTA.
Prince Carl Philip last raced in the 2012 Swedish GT season where he finished fourth overall in the GTB class.
“Swedish GT is a fine solution for us to maintain our motorsport activities on our home market. The new format of endurance racing will mean a new challenge for Prince Carl Philip and the team to adapt to, something we have full confidence in them succeeding with,” said Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin, Head of Motorsport at Polestar.
The race format of Swedish GT consists of two endurance races per weekend where Prince Carl Philip will drive alone in the shorter race and share car with another driver of Polestar Cyan Racing that will be announced in due course.
The 2017 Swedish GT season starts on May 4–6th at Knutstorp and ends on September 14-16th at Mantorp Park.

Prince Carl Philip and Thed Björk in the Swedish GT premiere this weekend

Prince Carl Philip will be joined four-time STCC champion Thed Björk, just back from a historic World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) victory at Monza, in the Swedish GT season start at Knutstorp in Sweden this weekend.
Prince Carl Philip will drive a Volvo S60 Polestar in the fastest class GTA this season, facing tough opposition from Audi, Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche drivers.
”I feel ready for the season start and I look forward to the new challenge. I am really glad to race together with Thed at Knutstorp. We work really well together and he has got a vast experience that I can utilise,” said Prince Carl Philip.
The first race of the weekend features a mandatory pit stop with driver change where Thed Björk will be co-driver to Prince Carl Philip. The second race has Prince Carl Philip driving alone.
”It’s great to be back in the same team with Prince Carl Philip again. We last raced together in 2015 when I claimed my third straight title and he claimed his first win. My mission is to create a good way of working for Prince Carl Philip – a base to build on for him during the year to become champion. I’m glad to be back at Knutstorp as well. I secured my fourth STCC title last time I was there and of course, the feeling ahead of the weekend is awesome with a WTCC victory in the bag,” said Thed Björk.
”We are delighted to have the most recent World Championship race winner Thed Björk to support Prince Carl Philip this weekend. This is the first step in our plan to give him the best possible conditions to become the Swedish endurance racing champion,” said Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin, Head of Motorsport at Polestar.

Thed Björk and Carl Philip won the first race today.
Prince Carl Philip and Thed Björk started the Swedish GT season in the best possible way by claiming pole position and victory, beating the field of Audi, Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche drivers at Knutstorp in Sweden with their Volvo S60 Polestar race car.
Thed Björk claimed pole position for the first race despite rain hitting the track just minutes before qualifying. He then headed the field in his first race stint, pulling up a strong gap before handing it over to team-mate Prince Carl Philip.
Prince Carl Philip maintained the lead, winning the race by more than 16 seconds over the McLaren pair of Erik Behrens and Daniel Roos and 45 seconds over Audi driver Jan Brunstedt.
“The season could not have started in a better way. We managed to claim pole and win the race despite difficult conditions. The team did a really good job with the car and Thed proved that he is a four-time STCC champion. I am looking forward to the second race tomorrow, driving alone will of course mean a different strategy,” said Prince Carl Philip.
The victory has the par in the championship lead ahead of the second race tomorrow in which Prince Carl Philip will drive alone, starting second, with Thed Björk acting as advisor from the pits.
Thed Björk was first and took the pole position at the first qualifying, Carl Philip was second at the second qualifying. Thed Björk leads the championship wth 26 points, Carl Philip has 25 points.

The Polestar Cyan Racing duo of Prince Carl Philip and Thed Björk were left without points from the first Swedish GT race of the weekend, despite challenging for pole position and the race victory.
Björk qualified second for the first race, less than three tenths from the Ferrari 488 of Fredrik Larsson who claimed pole position.
“It was a shame that the race ended too soon, but that is racing sometimes. I am happy with the balance of the car and Prince Carl Philip did a good job in his qualifying session. We are definitely out for revenge tomorrow and we have some things left to do on the setup of the car,” said Thed Björk.
The duo fought for the lead with the Ferrari team Mattsson Motorsport and Audi team JB Motorsport. Bernadotte took over the wheel after the mandatory pit stop, with the race coming to an end on lap 32 of 43.
“It was a simple mistake from me unfortunately and I am of course disappointed. We showed strong form in qualifying though and I am happy with the pace, especially as we are running with 30 kilos of penalty weight. We will no doubt be back for the second race tomorrow, fighting hard,” said Prince Carl Philip.

Polestar Cyan Racing is heading for Swedish GT at Karlskoga this weekend with driver duo Prince Carl Philip and Thed Björk focussed on reclaiming the championship lead.
The duo had a competitive, but tough, weekend in the previous race at Falkenberg, dropping them to fourth and seventh of the championship.
”Falkenberg did not turn out the way we hoped. The important thing was that we were competitive and we bring that speed with us to Karlskoga, a circuit where I have scored strong results over the years. Our goal is to be back in the Championship lead after the weekend,” said Prince Carl Philip.
Björk returns as co-driver with Prince Carl Philip for the final time this season, and comes strengthened from the World Touring Car Championship races in Argentina where he climbed to second place in the championship.
”It feels awesome to be back on my home track, Karlskoga, following a good summer break after my podium finish in Argentina. We’re heading to Karlskoga to fight for the championship lead – we have what it takes to win,” said Thed Björk.

Press release from Thursday
Prince Carl Philip will be joined by Polestar Cyan Racing’s Dutch WTCC star, Nicky Catsburg for the penultimate Swedish GT round at the former F1 circuit, Anderstorp, this weekend.
The previous race weekend at Karlskoga saw Prince Carl Philip securing a victory and podium finish, elevating him to third, just six points from championship leaders and Ferrari drivers, Fredrik Larsson and Ingvar Mattsson.
”Karlskoga was our best weekend so far this year and it feels good to have that with us going to Anderstorp. We will have to fight harder than ever this weekend but I am up for it and I am glad to have Nicky on-board. He is a very fast driver and hopefully we can stand on the podium together,” said Prince Carl Philip.
