The Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC) is back after the summer break this weekend at Karlskoga.
Prince Carl Philip secured his so far best result of the season in the last race with fourth position and is hoping to claim even more points this weekend.
”I have had many good results at Karlskoga in the past and I hope that we get a weekend with plenty of points. I can’t wait for the race weekend to start,” said Prince Carl Philip.
Two tests and qualifyings on Saturday, two races on Sunday.

Carl Philip was 10th at the first race at the Gelleråsen racetrack in Karlskoga today. His teammates: Robert Dahlgren won and Richard Göransson was 4th. Carl Philip spun with his car and lost many seconds.

Carl Philip was 7th at the second race, he spun also in it. His teammate Richard Göransson had to retire due to an eletrical problem in his car. Two cars which were in front of Carl Philip didn't finish either. Robert Dahlgren came 5th.

Carl Philip about his races last weekend
Prince Carl Philip had a tough race weekend but managed to finish in the points of both races, with seventh position as his best result.
”We worked hard on the setup but didn’t get it right until the final race where I am pleased with my pace. I still got some points with me and I hope to work our way further up for the next race,” said Prince Carl Philip.

Well I gather that he is not yet the kind of driver that has the skill to work with his team to get a car set up that he can finish well/not spin out. Because that's what the job requires to do well in the sport.

I was referring to a poster who was drawing comparisons with other drivers. And I didn't see the point in it

Thanks for the clarification. I'm not a huge fan of comparison as a method of argument on the forums, either.

The comparisons to his teammates do you mean? That actually happens quite often in carracing (take F1 for instance) if you and your teammate are f.i. consistently both last in races then we can assume that the car is probably technically not as good as the cars that often win races...
However, if you are consistently last and your teammate is consistently first, then the car and the team's technical skills are usually on par for both drivers...so then often the driver is at least part of the reason for finishing less good.

If in F1 your teammate finishes top3 often and you finish outside top 10 all the time...the team will likely put you in a lower division and you can try to work your way up again, another driver will take your place in the top team (this is what happened to Max Verstappen, who got promoted mid-season to one of the top cars and immediately won his first race)

but i digress....

Obviously Carl Philip has more responsibilities compared to other racers - I will not expect him to be #1.
Agreed, but there seems to be the random thought - especially where Carl Philip is concerned - that one must continually end in the top regions in order to justify the performing of the sport. So, if it's taken literally, a tennis player who just enjoys the sport but doesn't necessarily have the qualifications to win or end in the top should better quit. Performing a sport just for fun seems to be off-limits.
Okay, that was simplified and I suppose the potential danger of this sport also plays a role though.
Especially now that he's a father. But his love for speed is inherited thus natural.

Eventually he had to remove his name as the designer and put that of the actual author, Erik Eriksson. It was really an embarassing experince for him.

Personally I agree with what other posters have said, he got where he is now thanks to his surname and not thanks to his talent or commitment.
Of course if he wants to continue on this path he is more than free to do so. The collaboration with Kylberg is a smart idea. From the moment CP has started to work with him things are much improved, he seems more serious and committed and has been able to avoid the kind of akward situation he experienced in the past.
The first part is prejudiced to say the least and can't be proven, talent is debatable but I think it's unfair to accuse him of not being committed. He doesn't seem lax or uninterested to me.

Honestly neither the opposite can be proven, that he is where he is thanks to his talent.
I also think he is sincerely interested in design, but one thing is to be interested in something, another one is to have the skills to do interesting things in that field.
Anyway the collaboration with Kylberg has been a good idea and has had a good impact. From what I have read in articles posted on this board, their design projects have had positive results in terms of sales.
So maybe he is right in insisting on this path.

Just my two cents. A tennis player who is not very good, probably plays at a non pro level after taking a shot a a pro tour and failing. Unless someone is paying for all their costs to compete and they are willing to be beaten often. But that's a fairly grim prospect, spending one's days exiting in the first or second round week after week.

In auto racing, there are no elimination rounds. So, frankly it's not uncommon for less talented drivers to compete as long as they can afford to pay for their own teams and equipment.

With CP a lot of it for racing enthusiasts (and I am speaking as one of those) comes down to several things:
  • He's famous, good looking and brings cache and attention to the sport - that's a plus
  • He's not that talented and so if he is not funding his own team he is taking a seat away from some person that does have talent
  • If he's funding himself - he's just one of the many that do. As long as he is not a danger to others on the track, it's fine
That last is the sticking point. I've seen not prime drivers cause wrecks that take out otherwise innocent competitive drivers. I watched my brother pull a driver out of a burning car that got that way because another guy drifted into him, sliced open a fuel cell and turned him into a non-guided missile. The problem with going fast in a car is that you can do a lot of damage just because you are not great at it.

BTW, lots of non famous, not so talented people and even not so rich people are involved in motor sports. They participate at local tracks or club events, spend time dredging up money to fund another year or become car owners and mechanics.

I'm happy for any person, including CP, who can follow their dreams. I always wish him well. I hope he continues to rep for the sport even after he stops driving. He certainly has the race bug!

The Scandinavian Touring Car Championship heats up in the penultimate race weekend of 2016 at Solvalla in the Swedish capital Stockholm where Polestar Cyan Racing team-mates Richard Göransson and Robert Dahlgren are entangled in a tough title fight.
Prince Carl Philip left the previous race at Karlskoga with two points finishes, something he hopes to repeat this weekend.
”Solvalla is really a unique challenge and my goal for the weekend is to score points in both races, as we did at Karlskoga three weeks ago,” said Prince Carl Philip.
