Prince Carl Philip is back in Swedish elite racing. On July 18, he makes a comeback in the classic Västkustloppet in Falkenberg. Prince Carl Philip will start in a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (991 II).
- It feels a bit like the circle is closing because it was in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia that I seriously started my racing career in 2008, says Prince Carl Philip.
Prince Carl Philip is one of 15 drivers on the starting line when the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia begins the season in Falkenberg. Today, July 17, tests and qualifiers await. Tomorrow, the first two races of the season will be decided.
The last time Prince Carl Philip competed in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia was in 2011. The debut in the class took place at Ring Knutstorp four years earlier.
- It's a few years ago. I was expectant, a little nervous I think, but thought it would be great fun. It was the first time I sat in a proper race car in a competition context, he says.
Back to stay?
It has been nine years since the Prince last drove an entire season in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia. What does the Prince think is similar compared to then and what is / feels different?
- I think there are many similarities. The Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia is still a unit class with a strong cohesive feel. The car is new and completely different compared to the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (997) I drove in 2011. The new 991 is easier to drive and feels better and more stable. But it's still a Porsche with a lot of pressure and everything is in the back as well.
2019, the Prince turned 40 years old, which means that in addition to the main class, he will also compete in the Masters Cup, the championship in the championship for drivers who are 40 years or older.
How does the Prince view his chances in the Masters Cup? Is the goal to win?
- I think it is great fun and very good for racing in different ways that Porsche has opened up the Masters Cup and Porsche Approved Cup, the cup for the first generation of 991. But there are many in the starting field who have driven the Carrera Cup for many years and who have significantly more experience with the car than I have.
So the Prince does not feel a favorite print?
- Well in terms of age because I am the youngest in the category, but I know that there are some, not least in my team Mtech Competition (Magnus Öhman and Thomas Karlsson) who are strong. There is good competition.
Is the 2020 comeback season followed by more people? Will we see the Prince as a regular driver in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia for a long time to come?
- We'll see, I hope so. There is a lot to do, but of course it would have been great fun.
