Polestar confirms multi-year STCC programme with Cyan Racing
Polestar, the performance brand of Volvo Cars, will be on the grid of the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship in 2016 with Cyan Racing and two Volvo S60 race cars driven by Prince Carl Philip and a yet-to-be-named driver.
Prince Carl Philip will start his fourth STCC season in 2016, following a record-breaking season in 2015 where he scored a maiden victory and broke into the top 10 of the driver standings.
“The 2015 STCC season has exceeded my expectations and I am very pleased to confirm a continued programme this early. My ambition is of course to step up my performance and results even further next year,” said Prince Carl Philip.
The identity of the second Polestar Cyan Racing driver will be released in due course.

So far there has been three drivers on the team. If there next year will be only two, it means that one of (or possibly neither) the three-times STCC champions, the reigning champion Thed Björk or Fredrik Ekblom will not continue at the team next year. Thed Björk leads STCC championship and Fredrik Ekblom is second. Carl Philip is 9th.

King Carl Gustaf is in Knutstorp to follow his son's races:
- It goes like that a father should follow his son and see what he's up to. I've been here in Knutstorp many times and other race tracks throughout Sweden as well. If you have followed motor racing since the 60's, it gets to that, says the king who with the Prince's involvement has had more reason to follow precisely STCC in recent years.
- It is always great fun to follow Carl Philip at this close range and I'll have to admit that his development is moving forward. He has learned enormously over the years but there is also hard competition in a tough class, says King Carl Gustaf and pays tribute to the prince's team:
- There is an extremely fine group, and after all these years together the guys know each other well. I have also come to know them, which is great fun.

Carl Philip's teammate Thed Björk became the first ever driver to take 3 consecutive titles, in 2013, in 2014 and now in 2015.

At the championship results Carl Philip's teammate Thed Björk is the champion with 366 points, Fredrik Ekblom second with 356 points, and Carl Philip 10th with 66 points... and my finnish countrywoman Emma Kimiläinen 7th with 158 points.
Poäng _ STCC

Polestar Cyan Racing driver Thed Björk wrote history in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship season finale at Knutstorp by becoming the first ever driver to claim three consecutive titles.
”I am beyond words on how awesome this is! I have fought so hard to get to this stage of my career and to become the first ever driver to take three consecutive titles is something I will carry with me for ever. A huge thanks to everyone in the team, we have done this together!” said Björk.
Prince Carl Philip had a weekend of ups and downs where he qualified a strong sixth, a result he followed up with eighth in the first race and tenth in the second race. The result means that Prince Carl Philip secures his first ever top ten finish in the drivers championship.
”There were some unfortunate incidents in the races, but I am pleased with my pace and especially to make it to Q2 for the second time this year. This has been my best so far STCC season and I am looking forward to make it even better next year,” said Prince Carl Philip.
”I am extremely proud of Thed, Fredrik, Prince Carl Philip and everyone in the team. Our 20th anniversary could not have been crowned in a better way and this spurs us even further ahead of our future challenges,” said Christian Dahl of Polestar Cyan Racing.

Highlights of the STCC 2015 season
Höjdpunkter från STCC-säsongen _ SVT Play

Volvo are believed to be ready to launch a programme joining the FIA World Touring Car Championship in 2016 (driven this year in various countries in Europe, Morocco, Argentina, Thailand...), and the reporters in SVT speculated that Thed Björk and Fredrik Ekblom would be the drivers. Then Carl Philip would get a new teammate to STCC.

Carl Philip gave an exclusive interview to Expressen in Knutstorp.
- When I was in fourth grade, I told my teacher that I wanted to be a racing driver, says Prince Carl Philip.
Janne "Flash" Nilsson, 54, from Värmland, a legend in Swedish motorsport, met King Carl Gustaf in his early career, became acquainted with the royal family and eventually close friend of Carl Philip.
- I met Carl Philip at a motor event when he was sixteen. We hit it off immediately, and when he began studying at Lundsberg he often came to the racetrack and hanged, says Nilsson and tells how Carl Philip was staying over at him in Karlstad on weekends, and the prince's interest in engines grew.
- We drove karts and boat. I think he enjoyed and was comfortable with me and my sport friends, says Nilsson and describes Carl Philip as a little lost young man.
- He was, what should I say? Little confused ... But who isn't as a teenager? Add that you are dyslexic and moreover prince. It does not get easier then.
Nilsson gave Carl Philip a place in his Porsche team and he made his racing debut in 2008 in the Porsche Carrera Cup.
- At first he came last, but we had the goal that he would be among the first 20 in which he succeeded and then it went on. We drove in Germany and elsewhere around Europe. It was a very fun time.
When the team was closed in 2012 Carl Philip was offered to drive a car by Volvo Cyan Racing in the STCC.
- I'd be lying if I didn't say that he has found it easier to drive a race car because he is a prince. But at the same time, he also had a rougher ride. I think that there is no other athlete followed in this way ever in Sweden. For three years, the media has told you where he is poor at, says Nilsson

Carl Philip was 25 when he competed in karting for the first time. His teammates Thed Björk and Fredrik Ekblom started at 6 years old, like most other STCC drivers.
- It is clear that I don't have the same start that way, I don't have that experience, and I can never get away with that. I am constantly evolving as a driver, but there is still a lot to improve. I know I can develop, that there is more to give. I have high standards for myself, says Carl Philip, whom both colleagues and competitors described as a brave and fearless driver.
But even if the other drivers say that Carl Philip, nobody calls him the prince, "is nice, humble and kind" and "like anyone", it clearly shows that he is not at all "like any driver" when he is in Knutstorp. A bodyguard is constantly in the background, spectators watching, and around Carl Philip's car and place in the team stables people take photos all the time with their mobiles.

Some drivers about Carl Philip:
Thed Björk, teammate:
"It is easy to say that he may drive in STCC just because he is a prince but he's actually a very good driver. He hasn't won me yet, and I'm happy about that, but he's there, and tries. Now Carl Philip has a new contract clear and will continue to evolve like this. Nobody says "the Prince" at race track, here he is Carl Philip."
Fredrik Ekblom, teammate:
"He's very nice and appreciated in the team and we get along well. I think he has made great progress this season, he's fearless as a driver. It's great for him to come into this and race with me and Thed who are the best drivers in Sweden. That Carl Philip drives STCC is obviously good PR for the sport. It is as if Zlatan would drive STCC. "
Fredrik Larsson from WCR/BWM Dealer Team:
"He has developed a lot over the past year and has shown he can hold it together even under heavy pressure. I think he is doing really well, although he may occasionally lose focus."

How long can the drivers race? I mean, CP is 36, and in most sports that is considered an old age... Could Carl Philip give up to do his duties and dedicate to the race? I'm asking because I don't know if that's considered a job or an hobby...

Roger Samuelsson, who raced also in STCC this year, is 52 years old. Carl Philip's teammate Fredrik Ekblom, who came second at STCC championship this year, has his 45th birthday in a couple of weeks. It isn't unusual at all that in race classes like STCC is, the drivers are over 50 years old.

Carl Philip's team Polestar Cyan Racing will enter the FIA World Touring Car Championship in 2016 with two Volvo S60 Polestar race cars as start of a multi-year programme. This year the races were driven in Europe, Morocco, Argentina, Thailand, China...

Robert Dahlgren will return to the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship with Polestar Cyan Racing for the 2016 season. Dahlgren, the 2010 STC Cup champion and a three-time STCC runner-up, will drive one of the two Volvo S60 Polestar race cars alongside Prince Carl Philip. Dahlgren is born in 1979, like Carl Philip.

Carl Philip gets a tough challenge from his new teammate at STCC this year, Robert Dahlgren. At least it seems so when you read Dahlgren's interview.

How are you preparing for your STCC return?
”I am driving a simulator every day. I exercise at least five times a week, between 30 to 40 hours a week. I mix running, skiing and strength training at the gym.”
Ten questions with Polestar Cyan Racing driver Robert Dahlgren _ Cyan Racing

The official test days for STCC are 12-13 April in Ring Knutstorp and 19-20 April in Karlskoga. The teams test in one of these. All teams aren't so ready yet so the organizers have made two tests. Because everything should be ok for Cyan Racing, I think that the test days for Carl Philip are 12-13 April. We will see.
Intensiv testperiod inför STCC-premiären i Skövde _ STCC

Carl Philip's teammates at Polestar Cyan Racing, Richard Göransson and Robert Dahlgren, were testing their cars today at the official STCC tests at Knutstorp.
Carl Philip wasn't at the tests.
"Göransson and Dahlgren will be joined by Prince Carl Philip in Polestar Cyan Racing’s third Volvo S60 during the 2016 STCC season, while he missed the test at Knutstorp due to other commitments."
Richard Göransson breaks lap record in first STCC test _ Cyan Racing

I was wondering why CP missed the test and thought that perhpas it had something to do with the baby. We'll see...

Knutstorp Racetrack is in southern Sweden, about 560 kilometers from Stockholm. So it is not a wonder that Carl Philip didn't go testing there when Sofia's pregnancy is almost in its end. The closest airport seems to be 45 minutes away from Knutstorp.

It seems clear that Carl Philip will not race at the season's first STCC races in Skövde on 1st May. The tests and qualifications are on the king's birthday 30th April, and he can't take part at the race without attending them.
No official press release from STCC or Carl Philip's team Cyan Racing yet.

Scott McLaughlin (who drives for Volvo Cyan Racing at V8 cars serie) has been invited to stand in for Volvo's royal racer Prince Carl Philip of Sweden at the new Skövde Airport Circuit on May 1, driving a turbocharged four-cylinder version of the V8-engined S60 he races here.
Prince Carl, an accomplished racing driver who is third in line to the Swedish throne, is unable to contest the opening round of the Scandinavian series because he is committed to attending the 70th birthday celebration for his father, King Carl XVI Gustaf.
McLaughlin is keen to join the main Volvo Cyan Racing team to test himself in a different competition, but his availability will depend on approval from his local team boss, Garry Rogers, who will have to rearrange his star driver's schedule in the lead-up to the next V8 event in Perth a week after the Swedish race from May 7-8.
"I'd love to do it," McLaughlin told Fairfax Media after winning Sunday's 200km second leg of the Phillip Island SuperSprint. "It's up to Garry. I have a lot of commitments before the Perth SuperSprint."
Rogers, who is locked in negotiations to re-sign McLaughlin to lead an extended Volvo V8 factory team deal form next year, confirmed the timing of the call-up could be a problem.
"He has the drive, standing in for Prince Carl," Rogers said. "It's a matter of juggling his schedule here so he can do it. But it will be difficult because we have a lot of promotions and appearances for sponsors in Perth. At this stage, I'd say no, but we're trying to work something out. Volvo want him, so we may be able to make it happen."
V8 Supercars_ Scott McLaughlin dominates at Phillip Island SuperSprint

Micke Fransson, the media manager of STCC (the racing serie Carl Philip races in) says that Carl Philip will not race at the first races in Skövde on 1st May.
- The prince will not race. His car will be run by an Australian with a very complicated name, Scott McLaughlin.
When did you find out about this?
- We have known that the king has his birthday. There has been little different rumors about whether he would race or not. But the final decision came when we learned that the Australian would race.
Will it have an influence on the public interest that the prince cancels?
- No, it does not contribute anything to the number of audience.

Carl Philip will race his first STCC races of the season at Mantorp Park on Thursday 26th May, there are two races in the evening.

Prince Carl Philip missed the season opener at Skövde due to the 70th birthday of his father King Carl XVI Gustaf, as well as having become a father himself. For this race Prince Carl Philip is hoping for a strong comeback.
”I love to be back racing in the STCC again. I have raced many times at Mantorp Park before, but never the short version and never in twilight conditions. So I am really excited to take on these challenges and hope for a strong points haul,” said Prince Carl Philip.
