Princess Madeleine



Madeleine, Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland, was born on June 10, 1982.

She was baptised on August 31, 1982 at the Palace church and was given the names Madeleine Thérèse Amelie Josephine.

She is the youngest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. She has two older siblings, Crown Princess Victoria, born July 14, 1977 and Prince Carl Philip, born May 13, 1979.

In accordance with the 1979 Act of Succession, which entered into force on January 1, 1980, Princess Madeleine is third in the line of succession, following Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Carl Philip.

Education

Princess Madeleine attended the Västerled parish preschool in 1985. She then continued her junior level at Smedslättsskolan in Bromma. In the autumn 1989 she continued on to intermediate level at Carlssons School in Stockholm.

In the autumn 1998, Princess Madeleine started studying at Enskilda Gymnasiet for senior level, following a social science programme. She matriculated in the spring of 2001.

Language and Law

Princess Madeleine spent time in the United Kingdom in the autumn of 2001 for English language studies. During the spring 2002, she attended a course in law, took a course in computer science and received ECDL certification (European Computer Driving Licence).

Architecture and Design

In the autumn 2003, Princess Madeleine attended a work experience/trainee program focusing on architecture and design. The purpose of the program was to provide concrete, practical knowledge in architecture and furniture design as well as modern and contemporary art.

Academic Studies

Since the spring 2003, Princess Madeleine has studied at the University of Stockholm. She has completed courses in art history, ethnology and history. One of her main course essays focused on Drottning Victoria (1862-1930) and the establishment of Solliden Palace on the island of Öland. In January 2006 she will complete her studies at the University and go to New York for a trainee program at the UNICEF

Official Duties

In August 2005, Princess Madeleine presented the "Min Stora Dag" (My Big Day) volunteer prizes at the foundation's five-year anniversary.

She went on a full day field trip in September to her duchy with visits to the Hälsingland Museum and presented the "Gold Rider" prize in Hudiksvall.

In September she also presented the Her Majesty The Queen's Prize at the Taby Racecourse.

Royal Engagements

Princess Madeleine, with other members of the Royal Family, takes part in the celebration of Sweden´s National Day, The King and The Queen´s birthdays, the Nobel festivities, other official representation and state visits.

Due to the fact that she is studying full time at the University of Stockholm, The Princess is limited to the number of other official duties in which she can partake.

Interest in Art
In the autumn 2003, The Princess presented a major design prize at Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg, amongst others. In the spring 2004, she inaugurated the “Treasure from Rumania " exhibition at the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities.

Europa Nostra Award
During autumn 2004, The Princess made her second official visit to her duchy, this time to Hälsingland. She visited a number of farms of culture historic interest and presented the European cultural heritage prize Europa Nostra to one of them.

Since June 2005, The Princess has been patron of Europa Nostra in Sweden. Europa Nostra is a European organisation whose purpose is to preserve European culture heritage.

In the autumn 2005, The Princess took part in a historical building seminar in Gävle and visited the “Folk Art" exhibition at the HälsinglandsMuseum in Hudiksvall.

Min Stora Dag
One of Princess Madeleine's primary engagements is in the foundation Min Stora Dag, which in English means My Big Day. The foundation works to make sure that the wishes of children in long-term hospital care come true. In her role as Patron of the foundation, she visited Huddinge Hospital, Uppsala University Hospital and the Linköping University Hospital.

Civic Engagements
The Princess is also interested in social issues. On several occasions she has visited the Clare Parish in Stockholm, which works with the homeless and underprivileged.



Interests

Since childhood, Princess Madeleine's great interest has been horses and riding.

In conjunction with the declaration of Princess Madeleine's majority, she was presented a scholarship fund by the Gävleborg province, which is made up of both the duchies of Gästrikland and Hälsingland.

The purpose of the fund is support and encourage youth involved in horse riding. “Pony Rider of the Year with trainer in Gävleborgs province" and “Gold Rider" are both awards that were distributed for the first time in 2001 by Princess Madeleine.

The Princess is also very interested in art, culture, dance and theatre as well as social issues.

Like her sister she likes spending time outdoors in nature. She enjoys long walks and skiing.

Prince Carl Philip



Carl Philip, Prince of Sweden, Duke of Värmland, was born on May 13, 1979 at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. He was baptised in the Palace church on August 31, 1979 and got the names Carl Philip Edmund Bertil.

Prins Carl Philip is the second child of His Majesty The King Carl XVI Gustaf and Her Majesty The Queen Silvia. He has two sisters, Crown Princess Victoria, born on July 14, 1977 and Princess Madeleine, born on June 10, 1982.

In accordance with the 1979 Act of Succession which entered into force on January 1, 1980, Prince Carl Philip is second in line of succession, next to Crown Princess Victoria.

Education

Studies in the U.S.
In the autumn of 1994 Prince Carl Philip studied at Kent , a private school in Connecticut, where he spent two years.

The Prince then followed a science programme at Lundbergs Upper Secondary School in Värmland, where he matriculated in 1999.

Prince Carl Philip was confirmed in the summer of 1994 at Vadstena Church, after confirmation studies in Medevi.

Naval Reserve Officer
Prince Carl Philip did his military service at the Amphibious Battalion at Vaxholm's Coast Artillery Regiment and is trained as a combat boat commander (combat boat 90).

During 2001-02 The Prince completed a naval officer training course. During this time he participated in a long voyage with the mine-laying vessel HMS Carlskrona. Prince Carl Philip became second lieutenant in the Royal Swedish Navy and became a lieutenant in December 2004.

Graphic designer
In May 2006 The Prince completed a two-year full time course in graphic design at the Forsbergs School of Graphic Design in Stockholm.

The final exhibitation showed The Prince´s photographic works and documentary of homeless people in the center of Stockholm.



Royal Engagements

Every year Prince Carl Philip, with other members of the Royal Family, takes part in the celebration of Sweden's National Day, The King and The Crown Princess's birthdays and the Nobel festivities.

In addition to his studies The Prince has a number of other official duties, often in connection with Värmland, the Prince's duchy.

In the summer of 2004 The Prince participated in a couple of extensive naval training exercises in the Stockholm archipelago.

Prince Carl Philip was a part of the relay that carried the Olympic Flame through Stockholm and participated in the design of a calendar in aid of the World Childhood Foundation.

In April 2005, Prince Carl Philip inaugurated the Nordic Book Binding exhibition at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

Interests

Prince Carl Philip is interested in art and is pursuing an education in graphic design.

In December 2003 The Prince designed a CD cover that was distributed in conjunction with The Queen's birthday containing music from the Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky.

The Prince enjoys nature and the outdoors. He was a scout when younger. He is interested in sports and when time permits he enjoys motor sports. He is also a skilled skier and sailor.

He skied his first Vasa Ski Race in 2004, which he completed in 6 hours, 21 minutes and 52 seconds, beating The King's record from 1987. As patron of the Volvo Ocean Race, The Prince is taking part in the race during the autumn 2005.

Prince Carl Philip has a keen interest in motor sports and took the Swedish Motor Sport Association's racing licence. In the summer of 2005 he took his racing debut in a go-cart race in Stockholm.

The Prince also carries a hunting licence and enjoys participating in Royal hunts.
