At the UN, the queen was pictured with Ingrid Bouterse, wife of president Bouterse of Suriname.

The photo was made by the Surinamese UN ambassador, who posted it on facebook. The RVD says that the queen didn't take the initiative for the photo, neither did the two ladies have a conversation. They were at a function where people were introduced to each other, though the queen didn't know who she was introduced to the wife of the president of Suriname. The Suriname presidency also distanced itself from it, the Surinamese UN ambasador deleted the photo.

The trouble is that the Netherlands withdrew its ambassador from Suriname. President Bouterse is convicted in The Netherlands to 11 years of prison for drug trafficing & an international arrest warrent was issued. His son Dino Bouterse is serving held in arrest in the US for arms trafficing to Hezbollah. Mr. Bouterse is also held responsible for the December-murders in the 80-ties. Sadly, he is hiding behind diplomatic immunity.

Well, in the meantime the air between the Netherlands and the former colony has cleared up a bit: the kingdom will be represented again by an Ambassador. The present Charge d'Affaires of the kingdom will be promoted to the rank of Ambassador. Also in The Hague, the Surinam Charge d'Affaires will be promoted to the rank of Ambassador.

It is worth to receive the King and Queen, I bet there is a nice guest suite in the Embassy.... Because of tensions between Surinam and the Netherlands, Queen Beatrix has never made a visit during her Reign. Let us hope that King Willem-Alexander will be able to visit Surinam once. Half of the Surinamers live in the Netherlands, so no wonder the ties are close.

It is a great pity that Beatrix never was able to visit the country as queen, but the last decade or so that is unwanted of course with this criminal & his helpers in power. After the king and queen drunk beer with Putin it would be better to stay away from controversial heads-of-state for a while. And it is rather sensible to stay away from drugdealers/murderers (like Bouterse) in general of course.

It is surprising that the people who organised this trip didn't intervene, somebody at the UN-embassy/foreign affairs won't be getting his/her christmas bonus this year ;).

We should enjoy these nice embassies while they are still there. The new strategy of Foreign Affairs is to sell some of them. Budget cuts and all that. Quite a shame.
