King Willem-Alexander during the ceremony of Thom de Graaf as vice-president of the Council of State today 29 October

https://anpfoto.nl/search.pp?eventid=4073082

That is the second position in the hierarchy after the King (himself the formal president of the Council of State). In Dutch media the vice-president is often nicknamed "De Onderkoning" (The Viceroy).

The Raad van State (est. 1531) is the most important adviser of the Government and part of the law making process. It is also the supreme Court of Administration, where citizens in conflict with a municipal, provincial or the national government (or diverse governments in conflict with each other) can start a procedure.

When there is no regent available for the under-aged King, by law the vice-president is the Regent. Is there no any successor to the King, the royal prerogative befalls on the vice-president of the Raad van State, awaiting new constitutional arrangements.

And the way this viceroy is appointed is far more mysterious than who will be the next monarch. It completely depends on a powerplay by the current coalition.
