Apparently mr. Müller is also the mayor of Berlin. According to royalblog, the Bundesrat has a new chairman every year. Since the year 2000 it is customary for this chairman to bring a visit to The Netherlands, due to the close ties between the countries. The king started to visit a German federal state each year for the very same reason.

And the President of the Bundesrat is the stand-in for the Federal President and thus the second man (or woman) in the Federal Republic. Should the Federal President be incapacitated or step down the President of the Bundesrat is Acting Federal President. (Oder of precedence in Germany: Federal President, President of the Bundesrat, President of the Bundestag, Federal Chancellor, so Mrs. Merkel is, in fact, number four in the country.) That gives the official visit a little extra, I think.

best wishes Michiru

Busy networking. I wonder if other monarchs, like Queen Elizabeth, also speaks to each individual minister or state secretary?

Sorry, I meant: I wonder if there is any other King who sees "the who-is-who" so frequently as the Dutch King? All individual ministers and state-secretaries are invested by him. As well the Governors of the Caribbean parts, the King's Commissioners, the justices of the Supreme Court, the councillors of the State Council, the members of the Auditory Chamber, etc. I think King Felipe comes close.

We have seen every fraction leader from the First and the Second Chamber visiting the King. From Geert Wilders of the PVV to Marianne Thieme of the Animals' Party. The Mayors of the provincial capitals as well those of the biggest cities are received in audience as well.

All ambassadors are sworn in when they are despatched to an Embassy. Etc. The chief commanders of the Armed Forces are received in audience. Everty foreign Ambassador is received and some are offered a diner when they leave.

All by all it is quite remarkable and exahausting list to see the "ceremonial" King so close and in direct contact with the legislatieve, executive, juridical, civil, military and diplomatic authorities.

Probably to ask how Paul Blokhuis and his family are doing after the sudden death of his youngest daughter at the age of 18 three weeks ago. Only a few days earlier she was admitted to the hospital because of symptoms most likely related to an autoimmune disease. It was the state secretary's first day back at work, so very considerate of the king.
