TM King and Queen will pay a state visit to Italy and Vatican City. The visits will take place from 20 to June 23, 2017. The Royal Couple will visit Rome, Milan and Palermo.

Are they still doing tiaras at the Vatican? When was the last time a Royal with her tiara was seen there?

At the last Swedish SV to Italy in 2009 Queen Silvia wore even two tiaras: the nine prongs at the State Banquet and the ruby tiara at the return banquet. Of course, that was before the crisis.

From Tuesday, June 20th through Friday, June 23 bring the King and Queen also a state visit to the Republic of Italy .

The state visit to Vatican underlines the bilateral or multilateral links between the Netherlands and the Vatican. Paus Franciscus represents 1.2 billion followers of the Catholic Church. So it is a real State Visit to the Holy See. Under Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI this would have seen everything in full splendor: the Pope himswelf wearing choir dress topped with a red or white mozzetta, the guests in white tie and long dress with diadem.

The current Pope however seems not to attach a lot to ceremonial and protocol. State Visit? Official Visit? Private audience? He just wears his daily soutane and the protocol for guests is free for interpretation. So I have no any expectation of seeing King Willem-Alexander in white tie and Queen Máxima in long dress with diadem.

Queen Silvia in 1991 seems last. And other then Elizabeth in 1980, seems to have gone out of fashion to do so back in the 1960s.

Maybe Máxima will surprise us and show up at the Vatican with a tiara while Willem-Alexander will be in white tie. After all, as you said, it is an actual state visit.

Queen Maxima looked stunning tonight at the state banquet wearing Queen Emma's ruby parure and red Jan Taminiau gown.

I think it is safe to say it is becoming her favorite tiara/ parure along with Queen Emma's sapphires. It is unfortunate though that she doesn't wear the smaller Orange-Nassau pieces more often, e.g.. the emerald or the aquamarine tiaras, which would be perfect for black tie dinners in state visits to a republic like Italy.

Tiaras were long gone even before Pope Benedict XVI. Like Countessmeout said, the last person to wear a tiara at the Vatican was Queen Silvia in 1991 and Benedict didn't become pope until 2005.

Here's a photo series of all the photographed instances of royal ladies wearing tiaras at the Vatican. I think it might be of some interest to us here.

Which tiara is she wearing? I can't tell, maybe the base of the Antique Pearl Tiara?

i love the pictures of her taking pictures of the ruins with her phone - it just shows how we all like snapping a perfect picture when being tourists, even the queen herself! :)

It looks like the base from the Antique Pearl Tiara. The same that Queen Maxima wore in 2001, before she became crown princess!

Maxima looks fabulous tonight. Am I mistaken or haven't we seen that gown before? The one shoulder looks familiar.

She wore it to King Willem-Alexander's birthday celebrations in April but we didn't get a very good view of it then.

Maxima looks her usual stunning self! That was a real hit, imo. I love the gown, the jewels are great with it. Only: I prefer the ruby peacock tiara. But I won't be too picky today.

And I'm dying to see a better pic of Princess Victoria. What a treat to sea her in a tiara as well.

Maxima looks wonderful in the Mellerio ruby tiara. One if her best :flowers:

Nice to see viktoria and Jamie. Viktoria looks lovely. :)

Daily fail needs to fire their editor. Or hire fact checker. I love the captioned photos, saying the royal couple with the president and his wife :bang: Simple fact check would tell you Sergio has been a widower since 2012. His daughter Laura has been acting first lady and often accompanies him abroad. He has two sons as well.

Maxima looks wonderful. I love her gala dinner dress & tiara.
Viktoria also looks great:)

That is nice. I believe she spends a lot of her time in Italy, in/ close to Porto Ercole where her parents used to own a house. Her daughter Juliana supposedly also lives (or lived?) in Italy (Tuscany as well). Juliana and Bernhards's old villa L'Elefante Felice was sold to Belgian billionaire who had it demolished. And considering Princess Christina is the patron of a music concours which bears her name, it is fitting she attends the concert of violinist Janine Jansen at the Palazzo Colonna tonight.
