The King and Queen of the Netherlands are quite active and profiling themselves very much. Trés bien!

@VorstenNL RVD: Koning en koningin brengen officieel bezoek aan Amerika van 1 tot en met 3 juni. O.a. bezoek aan Obama op het Witte Huis.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima will pay an Official Visit to the USA in June. They will meet the President Brack Obama at the White House.

Look forward to the trip, especially the State dinner.

Looking forward to this. I bet Maxima will look gorgeous!;)

I don't think there will be a state dinner. It is just an official visit, not a state visit. They can shake Obama's hand for a few seconds and maybe have a tea if they are lucky, but that is probably it.

It is not a State Visit, it is a short official visit with an economic and trade delegation in the royal slipstream. So no protocollary tralala and no state banquets.

:flowers:

It appears that they will be visiting Chicago as well as Washington D.C. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get a chance to see them at some point while they're here. :)

fantastic news, this looks like a great visit. can't wait for the pictures.

The royal couple is scheduled to be in Canada for a full state visit the week before that, are they not ? As I understand it, both visits are actually related to the celebration of the liberation of the Netherlands by the allied forces (mostly Anglo-Canadian) near the end of World War II.

Correct.

The programs of both visits are to be found in this thread.:)

Oh, thank you, Polyesco, for the pictures of their arrival!

I'm started to get excited about the visit. I hope to see them tomorrow when they lay wreaths at our National Memorial, as it's close to my office. I'll just have to find a way to sneak out of the office for a little bit!

The local press seems to be getting excited about the visit too. Here are some articles from the media in the towns they will be visiting:

I didn't realize that they are beginning their visit in Newfoundland. Great news, as Newfoundlanders don't often get to see non-British royals!

Supposedly they will be spending the night there and then flying on to Ottawa in the morning. Should give them a good chance to experience some good old Newfoundland hospitality! (They're among the friendliest people in Canada)

Today's state visit to Canada begins. Tuesday afternoon (local time) came King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima already in St. John's - the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Eya, yes, other royals have visited Canada. Just last September, the Crown Prince Couple of Denmark, visited Ontario. And kings and queens of other countries have visited over the years.

However, apart from the British/Canadian royal family, royals rarely visit Newfoundland. It would be really interesting to hear why they chose to start the visit in Newfoundland. Since the visit is being touted as a economic/education mission, maybe Dutch organizations are somehow working with Memorial University in Newfoundland?

The king told the press that he visited St. John's for the first time in 1986, when he was serving in the navy.

The reason they choose Newfoundland is a very practical one: the Government Plane (a rather small one) can't reach Ottawa in one go from Amsterdam. They had to refuel in Iceland and even Iceland-Ottawa is too far for the plane. If they want to fly from Amsterdam to Ottawa, they need to refuel at least two times. They made the choice to stay in St. Johns overnight and fly to Ottawa the next morning.

Some first Twitter pics from Frank Kuin and Jeroen Snel from the arrival in Ottawa. Queen Máxima is wearing a new outfit with a repeated hat. Waiting for better pictures!

I really like the hat. She also wore it during the visits to Noord-Brabant & Limburg.

I'd forgotten about that part of his military training. Glad that the couple have the chance to visit there. Did HM fly the plane as usual?

The King needs to execute enough flying hours to keep a valid great pilot license. I suppose he has been the captain or co-pilot for parts of the long flight.
