I did not read that Mette-Marit or Haakon stayed at Epstein’s house, just that they met several times at his home(s) at social occasions and once in Norway. All sorts of people went to parties at his house. Lots and lots of people.

And remember, even though Epstein had a conviction for soliciting a prostitute (yes an under age girl)
a) prostitution is not illegal everywhere
b) he got a very favorable sentence with a very generous work release-without digging really deep or knowing what we now know, I’m not shocked he was still able to further his acquaintance with the rich and famous.

What does prostitution being legal in X places have to do with the Epstein situation? MM knew he was a convicted sex offender but thought it was no big deal because it's legal? No sure what inference you are trying to draw out.

We don’t really know if Mette-Marit or Haakon knew anything at all about Epstein’s legal troubles in the last decade. I’m not implying anything about either of them.

But to play devil’s advocate— if someone was newly introduced to Epstein in this decade, before this year, and his conviction and sentencing somehow came up, I can understand how it could have been downplayed. A conviction for soliciting a prostitute, might not be a big deal in some people’s minds. The underage aspect could be explained as a misunderstanding.
Epstein got a slap on the wrist, so I can understand why he was able to carry on.
He was undercharged and undersentenced, so superficially it didn’t look that awful.
From various stories, even some people who vaguely knew about his conviction seemed to dismiss it as no big deal.

It was the Miami Herald’s story THIS YEAR that brought this all really out into the open. That is what led to the serious charges and turned Epstein into a pariah.

Given the way ppl talk (regardless of social circle) I find it hard to believe ppl in his social circle didn't know he was a convicted sex offender.

It's rather disgusting that he only got a slap, did no jail time even for his conviction.

It will be interesting to see how the fallout continues.

Please. Society tongues would gossip and Cluck about such juicy News as a person of Epstein’s history and rep socializing with Royalty. H&MM had to have some idea about him.

What, some really, really rich guy with lots and lots of high powered friends? Because that was readily known about Epstein.

The predictable reactions from various Norwegian opinion makers are coming in: https://www.dagbladet.no/kultur/dett...a-med/71887000

IIRC Royal Norway taught us that Dagbladet is very critical towards Haakon and Mette-Marit - and that is also the case in this editorial.
It is of course a "huge scandal!"
But - the editorial also ask some unpleasant questions as to whether there was a specific purpose to the meetings with Epstein. And whether Epstein donated money to funds and projects under Mette-Marit in particular and the CP-couple in general.

The government declines to comment on whether the NRF should have done a background check on Epstein and refer that question to court.

Some very good questions, especially the possibility of funding of any Kronprinsparret projects

It wouldn't surprise me if other royals and high profile people are "outed" as being friends or acquaintances with Epstein. It seems he had a knack for luring the rich and famous into his circles.

At least MM has apologised which means she knows it was wrong to associate with him; but I do agree that what is surprising is that she met him after he was convicted. Surely the palace would've done a background check on him - I thought that would be standard practice for any non-royal who socialises regularly with royals?

I don't want to downplay this thing, but in many parts of Europe, the sexual age of consent is around 15 or 16 and can go as low as 14 in some countries. So the whole 'he solicited an underage prostitute' would not shock me beyond measure and would not be interpreted in the same way as it is in the US.

So if it is the only thing that MM heard, well It would not be such a deal breaker...
After all a convicted sex offender in the us because of a statutory rape could walk free in Europe... It really depends with which depth she knew about Epstein's affairs

Crown Prince Haakon today commented on the Crown Princess's meetings with Epstein.

«The Crown Princess has chosen to be open that she met him a few times, she should had checked his background more closely, and she regrets that she did not, and is sorry»

Thanks Eya & Polyesco.

I read the articles, there is nothing new than what Haakon said. - And that was nothing.

I wonder what and when Mette-Marit ditched Epstein.
There are two scenarios I can think of on the top of my head.

A) They met at several social events. Mette-Marit kept him in the back of her mind as a possible donor of funds to her charities. Alternatively she discussed her charities with Epstein and got a positive response.
At some point she has mentioned this possible donor to her associates, who warned her off on the spot! - End of story. Until now.

B) She met Epstein casually a few times, including getting an invite to his place in Norway. And here she was warned by someone: Eeh, do you know who this dude is? He's poison! (Native Norwegians probably being more concerned about her position than foreigners.)
And then she ditched him.

In both case the explaining phrase about Epstein trying to exploit her name and position are plausible.
