An interview with Karolien Tavernier, who made the video on Filip and mathilde that you can see above.

© VRTKarolien Taverniers volgde prinsenpaar in China

Isn't it ironic how, before Phillipe met Mathilde, that he was totally unpopular, bu tnow he and her are considered the model royal couple and everyone luvs him now! I just luv how he praises his wife and is not jealous of her popularity. Bravo!

I wouldn't describe him as totally unpopular before his marriage. Media were just a lot less interested without a woman by his side. But he was never unpopular.

Mathilde has changed a lot in his life, and also in the way the royal court deals with the media.

A small videocamera to film the life behind the screens of the trade mission to China, that's all Karolien Tavernier needed to follow the activities of prince Filip and princess Mathilde. "With a small, inconspicuous camera you can film a lot more than the big camera crews of the tv news", she says.

Did the palace immediately accept your plan to follow prince Filip with your camera ?

"It's not the first time I work with a small camera. The more you do it, the easier it's accepted. My purpose was to film scenes you don't see in royalty programs such as Royalty or Place Royale. For instance, what do journalists exactly do during such a mission? I spoke about it with Louis Van Raak, editor of the royalty magazine Story. During the interview he burst into laughter, that's typical for the atmosphere you create with this way of working."

Did the prince actively participate in your report or were it rehearsed poses ?

"Beforehand certain agreements are made, but I never had the impression the prince was playing a role. Somtimes he gave me some advice about images and scenes that woudn't be useful to me. Not about his own behaviour. During a meeting with the mayor of Shanghai the speeches lasted an eternity. Because the prince saw I kept on filming, he gave me some good advice."

Jan Vandenberghe (severe critic of the Belgian RF) pretends there's never any spontaneity. He says it's all a big charade.

"I don't agree. The prince is surrounded by many advisors, it's inevitable that a number of actions or utterances are directed. When I was talking with him about his family, he started telling me spontaneously that he had just been on the phone to Belgium and that Elisabeth and Gabriël were making a hell of a noise. That wasn't a charade, but honest and spontaneous. As a journalist you can easily tell wether someone is sincere or trying to play a role."

Once - against all the rules of protocole - you interviewed Filip when he was on the ski run. That's unusual.

"Oh well, it's exactly those little things that show there's a openness at court. During another trade mission I asked the prince some questions about a ski run in Austria. He answered immediately in perfect Dutch and without words that someone else put in his mouth. The approach that journalists give to Begian court is being followed in Holland. There as well a documentary was shot on the everyday life and work of prince Willem-Alexander and princess Máxima, but it had to be cancelled because court wanted to organize everthing into the smallest detail."

Thank you for the translation and the pictures Hannelore. :) Funny comment about Elisabeth and Gabriel. I suppose there'll only be more noise from the children when he calls home from future economic missions, seeing as there'll soon be three children. :)
