It has been confirmed that king Philippe will receive the American president at the palace in Brussels on Ascension Day. The press speculated for a while if the palace would invite the president, and in the end they did. The president is in Brussels for a NATO meeting. Only a few months ago he named Brussels 'a hell hole'.

The Belgian press noted that only a few months ago the king -with approval of his government- held a speech against the rise of populism, isolationalism and building walls.

It is expected that the president's wife will also be present. I have not read any information about the Queen being present but it is likely that she is. Mrs. Trump will have a parallel programme while her husband meets NATO leaders.

Wow rather political in tone? Would have though the Belgian monarchy would have to be somewhat politically neutral like the others in Europe.
 
I do not think that the EU is a controversial thing in Belgium. Although they have their own populist protest parties, their bogeyman is mainly Wallonia and not the EU.
