i think it was only speculation in the tabloids. Nothing more.

Could it be that the engagement wasn't supposed to be announced that specific day as according to the first link above the press got a hold of it and the formal announcement came the same day (although they managed to get the whole family together)? And if so, could that explain Mathilde's outfit? Especially the pictures from the back (see second link) look pretty bad.

Actually the announcement was on a if i remeber right Friday and the press conference was after the weekend a few days later.

The engagement was indeed announced on a Friday, 10th September 1999, while the official presentation of the future princess and photoshoot with the family took place three days later, on 13th September 1999
