I can imagine that it's been a topic as well..

Black Eyed Peas star Will.i.am has donated £500,000 to the Prince's Trust and today met with the Prince of Wales at Clarence House. The Black Eyed Peas' frontman said he wanted to help transform the lives of disadvantaged young people.

Today Will.i.am met with Prince Charles to donate £500,000 to the Prince's Trust. The singer saw the Trust at work last month at a project in Newham. He grew up in East LA and his mother was a single parent, so the Trust is right up his ally. He says the British people have taken him into their hearts (he's a judge on The Voice UK) and he wants to give something back.

What a gift. Well done to him.

Will.i.am gives £500k to Prince
I have to say, my opinion of Will.i.am was similar to yours. However, that's a genuinely nice thing of him do and I, for one, applaud it.
The Prince's Trust does make a lot of difference, and the £500,000 will give a second chance to many.

Remember we all wondered why on earth he preformed at the Diamond Jubilee concert since he wasn't British? I'm sure Prince Charles made sure he got an invitation.

This is where Prince Charles comes into his own. He can open doors and get in front of philanthropists in a way that no politician could. The fact that the Trust is headed by the PoW gives it a cache and reputation that is so valuable.

Not to mention, he (Will.i.a) got to carry the Olympic torch.
But fair play to him; to me, it looks like a genuine act of philanthropy - and Prince Charles made sure he got some reward for it (the concert and the torch again).

I agree with your point about the POW but just wanted to comment on Wil.i.am being American and performing at the jubilee concert. Stevie Wonder also is not British and neither are Brian Wilson, Ricky Martin and Tony Bennett who all performed at the Golden Jubilee concert. It seems that although there was a focus on British and commonwealth performers the organisers of both concerts were happy to involve a smattering of "outsiders" (no offence intended).

It is a nice gesture from Wil.i.am - I just wish the Daily Mail could have refrained from characterising it as social mountainclimbing. If it improves the lives of young people then he can mountainclimb for all he's worth to my mind.

Thank you, Ctf922! I saw this documentary when it aired on ITV and I've been hoping it would be uploaded to YouTube so others could see it.

Charles's efforts and dedication to this project, and the area as a whole, is wonderful to see. He doesn't just go around learning about the problems and difficulties that people in our country are dealing with; he actually tries to do something about it. He's an inspiration.

The Prince of Wales as President of WWF-UK met school children who are involved in their Green Ambassador scheme at Highgrove House in Doughton near Tetbury, Gloucestershire on July 5, 2012. The children take part in a Green Ambassadors Summit and participate in a series of workshops – growing, art and letter writing – with an environmental theme.

Thanks for the pictures and especially for the article.
You just gotta love Prince Charles' sense of humour:
Quote:
Posing for photos with a number of schoolchildren and a glass replica of the frog on his shoulder, he also joked "the things I do for frogs".
...
The Prince was presented with a commemorative gold medal along with the brown and orange frog replica by the Ecuadorian scientist who discovered the amphibian. Charles said: "I'm very touched. It's very nice. I have a lump in my throat, it must be a frog."

I love the pictures of Prince Charles and the frog . I think my favorite ones are where the frog is on his shoulder. He looks very amused.

You do have to admit though its a new twist on things. Usually its a frog that turns into a prince and not the other way around.

For someone that has a passion for preserving nature, this little frog has to be something extremely precious to Charles and more meaningful than perhaps some of the more lavish gifts he's received over the years.

Oh, the irony indeed . I do agree with you about the fact that this frog is more than likely a very meaningful gift for Charles. He does love nature and wants to preserve it as much as possible. I remember him saying that he wanted to have breakfast with a red squirrel. It sounds juvenile to some, but I think for someone like Prince Charles it would indeed be a very precious experience.

It is a very meaningful gift indeed, not least because, according to the spokesperson for the conservation group, “It is fairly unusual to name a new species after someone but this is seen as something special in honour of the Prince.”

The scientist who discovered the frog, Dr. Coloma, said he wanted to honour the Prince's tireless campaign for and significant contribution to the wildlife preservation. Among others, in 2007 Prince Charles set up the Prince’s Rainforest Project to help discourage deforestation.

You can read a little bit more here.

I have no doubt Charles is thrilled with the honour. Let's not forget, Charles has an appreciation of frogs, evidenced by his purchase of this Faberge frog seal:

Now its really making me wonder if he perhaps has a stuffed Kermit the Frog who sings the anthem "Its Not Easy Being Green" That tune would have served the PoW well in the past years when his green ideas were ridiculed so badly.

I love that Faberge frog. Just think how fitting it would be for him to use it as his royal seal. We had Richard the Lionheart, Edward the Confessor and William the Conqueror and now perhaps Charles the Green.
