It might have been a good idea to schedule some events around Camilla's Quebecois heritage. Just a thought from a distant cousin...

Shouldnt she be called the Princess of Wales, by now?????
They seem like 2 different people in print.
Personally , I feel that she should startusing the POW title if she wants to advance to HM the Queen Consort of the Empire.

Thanks for the links.

Another article reveals that a new documentary entitled After Elizabeth II: Monarchy in Peril is to be aired in Canada -- basically stating that Charles on the throne may mean the end of the monarchy for them. Oh my... it's sad that people insist on making Charles and Camilla so unpopular despite their best efforts.

It's not so much that the two are unpopular in Canada (or British Columbia where I live) it's more that they seem to be rather irrelevant in today's social climate. We are a nation made up from so many different origins.
Many people have no opinion on them one way or another and simply don't care. A shame really, when Charles has done so much good work and forged a place for himself in the UK. But not in Canada, despite his 15 visits and his warm words. The Queen is another matter entirely.

I believe that this documentary is going to be broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The CBC is notoriously left-wing in its politics. IMO it tends to be anti-American, anti-monarchist and generally very small-L liberal. Wits referred to it not-so-long-ago as the "Communist Broadcasting Corporation.";) I think that scheduling this documentary at this time was simply a golden opportunity to gain some audience share. Although it's a Crown corporation, it's not public broadcasting in the sense that PBS is.

I think that this documentary will actually have very little effect on the way that people think about the monarchy. I'm disgusted that CBC would air it now, at the time of the Prince of Wales' first visit here in 10 years. It's disrespectful.:bang:

See that's what I seriously don't get...I mean for me this visit is a big deal. We don't get a heck of alot of action over here so for me having Charles and Camilla in BC is pretty huge. Have I always agreed with all of Charles' decisions? No but that doesn't mean I think that he will ruin the monarchy, infact I'm quite interested in alot of his work and I think he's done a great job so far. I just really don't understand some people though. From the people who I've met who aren't in favour of the monarchy, I've managed to gather that these people really know nothing about the monarchy mostly only what the media feeds them which is usually all the bad press. Charles and his whole family actually have been lovely everytime they come to Canada. I always love hearing their kind words.

I have to admit I don't see Charles' visit to Canada as hugely exciting, and I even follow the royal family. Maybe if the Queen were coming, or maybe if Charles were King, it would seem more exciting. Maybe it's because members of the royal family do show up here pretty often. Edward and Sophie have been to Canada fairly frequently, I think. I don't know the statistics but it seems like they're probably the most frequent royal visitors to Canada. Also Prince Andrew went to Lakefield College in Ontario on an exchange program for half a year, so he's actually lived in Canada, and I know he comes whenever there's an important event involving Lakefield College. Anyhow, I don't really blame people here for being indifferent--people don't know much about the monarchy, because our educational system does a pretty poor job of instructing people about Canadian history (and the media doesn't help) and although Charles and Camilla seem very sincere, they're in their sixties and definitely not glamorous.

As for the CBC, yes it is left-wing and it isn't known to support the Conservatives, who interestingly have support for the constitutional monarchy listed as one of their "founding principles" on their website. There was an interesting clip on the CTV news website that expressed a different view from that upcoming CBC documentary. CTV anchor Tom Clark talks to Paul Wells, from Macleans, and a journalist from Quebec's La Presse, about the monarchy. Obviously the Quebec journalist took an anti-monarchist position, but it was interesting to hear Paul Wells and Tom Clark express their opinions about the monarchy. Paul Wells said he doesn't often think about the monarchy, but when he does, he realizes, "I'm a monarchist." Tom Clark said the same thing--that there's something powerful about the tradition of having a Queen, even if it doesn't usually seem important in day-to-day life.

If you go here and scroll down in the sidebar, the clip is somewhere near the bottom now. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNe.../royal_visit_091103/20091103?hub=TopStoriesV2

Media or not -- (and who watches the CBC anymore?) - it remains a fact that many Canadians don't want the monarchy to be the head of state, thousands of miles from where the monarch lives. I am not one of them, but I understand the sentiment. Being interested in or liking the Royal Family is not the same as wanting them to be head of our country, however ceremonial. The British Royal family is not the only royal family that is in peril these days.

It seems more than a few do find the visit exciting. :flowers:

The Duchess of Cornwall provoked the wrath of animal rights campaigners yesterday when she wore a rabbit fur stole on the first full day of her tour of Canada.
Camilla was slammed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) after she sported the fluffy grey accessory against biting Atlantic winds - with a chill factor of minus two - as she and her husband, Prince Charles, began a gruelling 11-day visit, starting in the picturesque harbourside community of Cupids, Newfoundland, the oldest English settlement in the former colony

The Prince of Wales and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall were welcomed to Canada on Monday night by nearly 2,000 happy Newfoundlanders, who roared with approval as the royal couple walked a red carpet into a hockey arena in downtown St. John's.

Charles and Camilla woo Newfoundland crowds

Marjorie Roach said her fingers were "tingling" after shaking the hand of Prince Charles, as he and his wife, Camilla, toured two small, historic villages on the windswept coast of Newfoundland on Tuesday."Oh my heavens, it was so exciting," said Roach. "He sounded great and he's got a nice accent."
Throughout the second day of the royal couple's tour of Canada, Charles and Camilla broke constantly from their official schedule to plunge into small crowds of well-wishers. They eagerly shook hands, asked questions, and left many thrilled Newfoundlanders in their wake

I don't believe from reading the many, many articles from Canada, that you are alone in your view. Yes some of the media seem unable to focus on anything other than removing a British head of state, (with which I agree), but others are genuinly interested in the work Charles has/is doing. :flowers:

Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will officially open this year's Royal Agricultural Winter Fair on Nov. 6.
Chatham-Kent's own Canadian Cowgirls Precision Riding Team will be featured in the opening ceremonies.
The 16-member team, headed by Terry Jenkins of TJ Stables, will also provide escort into the arena for the Royal couple.

I can certainly understand the reasoning behind wishing to be known as the Duchess of Cornwall instead of the Princess of Wales but there is something that has mystified me several times over the past few months and perhaps someone knows the answer. I've seen many many post and news articles that still refer to Camilla as Camilla Parker-Bowles. What would be the reason for her still to be known by her ex-husband's surname?

I respect the DoC choice to wear fur if she so chooses. PETA can be extreme and harsh. My view is that fur is one of the warmest things one can wear in bitter cold, and every person has a right to chose fur without prosecution...On a non-political level I disagree with the general animal rights positions on this matter. However, I feel they have a right to be against fur in fashion, and not choose to wear it as well. Live and Let live....

I believe she doesn't use the title because it was so strongly associated with Diana. I don't believe she is hiding behind the title Duchess of Cornwall, how is she?

And advance to the HM the Queen Consort of the Empire? we have no empire, and there is some debate whether she will be the Queen Consort. :ermm::)

She is still known as Camilla Parker-Bowles, i do not know why to be honest. But the royals rarely use there last name.

The animals have a right to life and not to be skinned for use as a fashion accessory. There are many fabrics and linings that do not necessitate the slaughter of any living creatures. I believe nobody has the right to abuse living creatures in this way.

John Crosbie, the Lieutenant-Governor of Newfoundland, greeted Britain's royal couple today in a sealskin coat, a move that could spark new controversy among Europeans already upset over a rabbit stole sported earlier by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

Now that's disgusting !!

As for the Doc 's scarf, well that's an old story... I expected a Peta's reaction (always à little over the top). Frankly i'ts not a big deal and in the DOc's case, it's always a little bit mixed with some good old Camilla bashing.
We all know that the DOC is deeply involved, by personnal choice, in the animal cause. Wearing an old , and relatively small by the way, rabit made scarf is not like to be wrapped in a fur coat, like the man above...

There are people who are enthused about this royal visit, but honestly (IMO) most Canadians are not very interested. I think that in general, it takes a lot to get Canadians excited. Charles and Camilla playing in a hockey game might do it. ;) It's interesting that you talk about many articles, though, because the media is definitely devoting a lot of coverage to this royal visit. Actually, I think the media is the most enthusiastic of any group of people (other than royalty watchers) about Charles and Camilla's visit. Let's admit, Canada is not the most exciting place on the average day, so a royal visit is probably a breath of fresh air for journalists who are used to covering the same-old of Canadian politics every day.

(Btw as a Canadian, I do support Canada having a British head of state, for various reasons. I think Michelle Jean does a great job and I respect her, but I'd still rather the head of state be a British monarch, with all the weight of history he or she brings, instead of someone temporarily chosen by a Prime Minister.)

On the topic of Camilla's rabbit stole, people in centuries-ago Canada used fur a lot, for obvious reasons--fur is warm, and Canada...is not.;)

As a Canadian I wish that the royals were more involved in Canada. I don't know how exactly but I still wish it. I am not sure whether the Governor General's office needs to do a better job of its PR but as the Queen's rep in Canada it seems to be lacking. I hardly ever hear about the GG except if someone visits Canada or the Parliament is being opened. I know that Edward, Andrew and Sophie have visited in recent years because I was surprised to open a newspaper and see their pictures there. They seem to slip in and out of the country without making so much as a ripple. As for Charles and Camilla, how do you expect people to feel connected to them when they visit so rarely? This is Camilla's first visit yet she has been a part of the BRF since 2005, and Charles' last visit was 10 years ago. I don't mind having a foreign head of state, and I like the sense of history and community in the Commonwealth, but they need to do a better job of making the people feel connected to the royal family.

The opinion of this Canadian is that we as a nation are outgrowing the British Monarchy. No one cares that Charles is visiting and I live the Prairies which is full of royalists.

About the fur issue. I have noticed that the Queen, Queen Margarethe, and Crown Princess Mary all wear real fur and no one makes a peep. But it's different with Camilla.

The only thing I can think of is that a different rule applies to Camilla than the other three.

I think she looks very nice for her events, although I wasn't too keen on the blue velvet hat with the ensnared flower. The PoW looks like he's not having a bad time, either.

I agree with you iowabella on the fur issue. Plus, its not a new item and it was used in an appropriate environment, freezing wet Canada.

I think the Duchess always looks appropriate and I have a soft spot for odd hats. I just wish Camilla would get her clothes fitted. I think it would make a world of difference and make her look quite smashing rather than just elegantly appropriate.

As for the Canadian response, I'm quite surprised by the almost hostile press. My experience of Canadians is that they are a very friendly, kind, and calm people. I'm not seeing that in the media. Charles isn't forcing himself upon the Canadians, and from what I can see, only praises them immensely. He is just doing his job as the future King of Canada and until Canada changes into a republic, he will continue to do so. I personally do think a republic is inevitable and would be the right step, but not for a fair while. Until then, just enjoy the monarchy.

Trust me I'd love to come across more people who are interested in Charles' work maybe it's just the people I know, go figure. But the Canadian media seem to have been pretty kind to the royal couple so far, well atleast from what I've seen but I've been mostly watching tv. Maybe this seems really exciting to me cause this is the first time he has visited Vancouver that I've been old enough to enjoy his visit. The last time he came with William and Harry I believe was it 1998? I was far to young to remember or care about it. Slightly going off topic I'm going down to VanDusen Botanical Gardens to see Camilla on Saturday, just incase I get a chance to greet her any idea what type of flowers she prefers? :flowers:

First of all, I am no fan of Camilla's, but she looks nice and has every right to wear what she wants. The PETA people have gone too far. They have no right to tell people what they can wear, each can make their choice. I am sure there are PETA people who do some awful other things. Also, I have many Canadians friends who seeCharles and Camilla as surpurflus. They just don't find this monarchy relavent in their lives. Just some foreign entity. I, believe, after the present Queen dies, they will become a republic.

I went into Toronto and had two great encounters with the Duchess of Cornwall and one with the Prince of Wales. There were about 40-50 people at the Royal Conservatory of Music to see Camilla and she was warm and engaging to everyone and shook hands in the crowd and accepted flowers. I was then able to meet them both outside the Carlu a couple of hours later. The crowd was quite big -- and the majority of the people seemed under 30... so I think that blows the "people don't care" theory out of the water. Camilla recognized me from earlier in the day. "Hello. Oh, hello AGAIN!"

:previous:

That is nice to hear that she remembered seeing you earlier in the day. I admire the way Camilla has taken on a new "job" in middle age, without making major missteps. I'm pretty bad with both faces and names, and I probably wouldn't recognize someone I'd met a few hours before, if I'd seen a number of people in between. Or if I did it would be ten seconds too late.

I think Camilla usually looks just fine. I wouldn't go out hunting rabbits myself, but I don't have a problem with the rabbit stole. PETA, on the other hand...:whistling:

Canadians might not see the monarchy as relevant, but I doubt we're going to become a republic anytime soon. Tom Clark and Paul Wells touched on that in the CTV link I posted earlier. To make Canada a republic would require changes to the constitution, and changing the constitution is complicated and messy, so why bother when people are more apathetic than actually opposed to the monarchy? I thought Paul Wells said it best when he said, "Britain will probably decide it for us." Tom Clark: "How so?" Paul Wells: "At some point they'll decide to get rid of the monarchy, and the decision will be made for us."
