Actually Pakistan did not start out as an Islamic Republic.
Pakistan was proclaimed an Islamic Republic in 1956.
I'm sorry, I got my information from the pakistan Government site concerning it's history, which states that it became a Republic on 14th August 1947.
http://www.heritage.gov.pk/html_Pages/islamic.html

However, you are right it was a muslim state at that time and the constitution was altered in 1956, declaring the country an Islamic republic.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/sou...es/1156716.stm

I have to admit I have no idea what the difference is!

Essentially whilst it was a muslim country from 1947 (from a population point of view), muslim laws weren't part of the Constitution.

And just to add that Pakistan is not an Islamic Republic in the Iranian sense, which is a theocracy. (a little more on wikipedia )

I think Charles and Camilla will have a wonderful trip and will receive a very warm welcome, as guests do in Pakistan, whether they're royalty or not.

I'm sure it will be a perfectly safe trip. Pakistan gets high profile visits from abroad all the time (President Bush visited the country several months ago) and particularly over the past year because of the devastating earthquake in the north. The security concerns, while perfectly understandable, are way over-blown, my advice would be to not believe everything some of you might come across in the media. Millions of Pakistanis lead normal lives everyday, just like in any other part of the world.

Charles and Camilla will find many things of interest, a rich and colourful culture and a history that goes back thousands of years; a land where many of the giants of history have walked; Lord Buddha, Alexander the Great, Ghengis Khan, to name only a few, and one that is home to one of the great ancient civilizations of the world (Indus Valley).

Given Prince Charles' interest in inter-faith/cultural relations and the respect he commands among Islamic circles, Im sure he and his wife will have an enjoyable and productive visit.

Thanks, I did in fact look up the difference on various sites including Wikipedia, I just forgot to come back on to this thread and edit my post.:bash:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_republic

I too am certain that Charles and Camilla will have a wonderful visit and that both will be well received!

I'm looking foward to Camilla's wardrobe, I'm absolutely certain she will wear shalwar kameez at least once.
I hope she chooses one by a Pakistani designer though, as British designers just don't get the cut right.

Salwar (or shalwar) being loose trousers and Kameez a loose fitting tunic or shirt.

Thank you Skydragon, i just want to ask.
So it is the same kind of dress Camilla wore, when the royal couple visited the Al-Azher mosque in Cairo in March this year. It looked nice, i remember.
I´m very much looking forward to see TRH together in Pakistan.
They hadn´t many official duties the last couple of weeks, so i think they had use the time for preperations for their trip.

Very similar, although I hope we will see a new outfit or two!

Pakistan is not in the Middle East. It is a South Asian nation (part of the Indian sub-continent)
.
Ah yes you're right Humera. I knew where India was, but Pakistan and Afghanistan are a bit fuzzy.

I hope Camilla picks up a nice Pashmina shawl. The intern from my office is from Pakistan and picked up a beautiful pashima while visiting her family there. I was quite surprised. The weave is a bit coarse but she said it was for a purpose - to help the fabric cling better when you sweep it over your shoulder.

The silky recreations in America, she complained, have a tendency to slide off in the wind.

Very snazzy in a trouser suit. Camilla looks very chic and elegant I think.
