In the interview Dr Khan gave, he said he broke up with Diana. I believe her friend, Rosa Monckton, said the same thing. The cultural differences and the resulting expectations placed on him by his family cannot be underestimated. Attempting to apply western assumptions and reasoning to such a situation would be presumptuous and inaccurate.

I thought that apart from the inquest, this was the only interview he had given?

WORLD EXCLUSIVE: Diana's Mr Wonderful Hasnat Khan gives his first ever interview | Mail Online,

In this article he declined to answer who had ended the relationship, at the inquest, under oath, he said she had ended it.

Regardless of what Diana might have told her friends, and of course she had a history of being selective in what she told different people, and of saying things that suited her own agenda, only two people knew what really happened to end their relationship. The only one of those two people who is still alive has given evidence under oath that Diana ended it. I have no reason to doubt him, though I was truly amazed by the revelation.

So interesting that none whatsoever of Dr. Khan's friends (doesn't seem like he has many) or his colleagues have broken down and sold tidbits about him. He remains such a mystery...

I have read through his interview a couple of times and it would appear that words have been attributed to him that he did not in fact say, however this was funny -

Skydragon, I don't really understand the joke about the "boot" of the car: I mean: boot is the right word for it, isn't it? And they did the same with Bashir when he came for the Panorama-interview, IIRC?

Thank you in advance for enlightening me.

Yes Jo, here we tend to call the luggage compartment the boot.

Can you imagine a grown man, presumably in a suit, climbing in to the luggage compartment of an ordinary saloon car. I don't believe we are talking about an Audi here, probably a Ford Escort or something along those lines. He would have to have 'folded' himself with great care as most 'boots' were not very big. Imagining how he would go about it made me laugh.

Sad that they had to meet so secretively to have a relationship.

I think Bradford and Brown both say in their respective books that the other residents of Kensington Palace, especially princess Margaret, knew what was going on, starting with Oliver Hoare's visits and the chauffeur of Margaret is quoted as having asked Diana why she doesn't let her visitors simply come up at her front door as anybody knows anyway but nobody minds... And I think it was Wharfe who wrote that the policeman at the entrance knew and would sometimes record the visitor in the visitor's book, even though he had been smuggled in...

Yes, it sounds funny but I think I read in the various books that they used a station wagon with blackened rear windows... Still, very undignified!

At that time they didn't have to be secretive, it was deceitful and added to the excitement, the 'drama'.

How do you know that it didn't have to be secretive? What major relationship for Diana, Princess of Wales in London could survive for two years of press intrusion? Again, Skydragon I guess we have to disagree to agree.

IEither Bradford or Brown claimed that Diana and Hasnat's relationship only became an "affair" when Diana's divorce was through, because Hasnat wanted it that way. So there was no need to be secretive when it comes to KP staff and policemen, only secretive towards the media, IMHO. And Skydragon in my reading commented on the fact that Diana tried to undermine security at her own residence.

Most middle-class Pakistani girls are often too busy with their careers and education to contemplate marriage in their early 20's. It's increasingly common these days for young Pakistani women to delay getting married as they would prefer to be settled in their chosen field.

I agree. I read that it was actually Dr Khan who insisted on no one knowing about the relationship. He did not want any media attention whatsoever and I respect the man for that. A lot of men would have killed to be in his shoes, and for the world to know about it.

Didn't the relationship last for two years? That would have put it as starting in 1995, a year before the divorce was finalized.

This is the man she apparently loved, whose parents/family she went to meet. I believe it is reported that she had even introduced him to William and Harry. Once in the door, where they were likely to meet servants and other royals, what did she do, put him in the laundry basket? Did they not think that it might have been less dramatic, less disrespectful to have used a vehicle with darkened windows?

Much more fun for Diana, IMO to sneak past security and thumb her nose at everyone.

Honestly, nobody in the Palace, Royals or staff, seemed to care about her relationships with other men (exception made with Mannakee perhaps, if it actually happened). Most of them probably thought that when she was with a lover, the crises between her and Charles became rarer and rarer. It was surely more of a game than a way to enter incognito. Some like Hewitt even said they find it 'exciting' .

I have a friend, who loves nothing more than to play such 'exciting' games.
