11/06/1987 - Charles and Diana in Hamburg
Royaler Glanz in der Hansestadt | NDR.de - Geschichte - Chronologie - 80er-Jahre
Article (http://www.ndr.de/geschichte/chronologie/achtzigerjahre/charlesdianahamburg113.html):
Time Travel: Charles and Diana in Hamburg

Who knows Hamburg know: To survive a gloomy autumn day at Alster and Elbe takes it north German composure. And of all guests from a European country with traditionally more bad weather to 6 November 1987 to bring a little sparkle to the daily grind of the Hamburger: Britain's Prince Charles and his then-wife Diana . Motor thunder of a special machine the royal flying visit announced shortly before noon this morning at the Hamburg airport.
A red carpet is rolled out and uses an optical color in the cold, wet rainy weather. The dignitaries of the Free and Hanseatic City - especially the Mayor Klaus von Dohnanyi and his wife Christa - form the welcoming committee for the royal guests. In the finest yarn they make their respects to Princess Diana, certainly the lowest servants that Hamburg has ever seen before. At the invitation of German President Richard von Weizsäcker, the Crown Prince was already on 1 November 1987 came to a several-day visit to Germany.

Quarters in the guest house of the Senate
The welcome at the airport followed - as usual with such state visits - a tightly packed program of visits. In highly polished dark Mercedes sedans, the Royals are first brought to her quarters. While driving, the royal couple is separated Diana is chauffeured along with Hamburg's First Lady, while Klaus von Dohnanyi makes his guest Charles Company. A motorcycle police escort accompanied the 20 vehicles counted car convoy to the guesthouse of the Senate, the white villa on Feenteich.

British weekly Alsterhaus
From there it continues in Hamburg's most famous department store: the Alsterhaus . In the exclusive consumer temple to Charles and Diana open the "British Week" and stir vigorously the drum for products from the island. Thousands of people have come to the Jungfernstieg to catch a glimpse of the royals. But only the Alsterhaus salesgirls who wear scarves to celebrate the day with British flag have exclusive box seats. Charles gets to take home a wallet with Hamburgensien, views of the Hanseatic city, Diana Mecki two figures for the little prince's home. At the tasting of chocolates is an affectionate gesture of Prince Charles punish all rumors about an alleged marital crisis lies. With the words "For you, Di" he should have his princess handed a piece of chocolate. New luck "Made in Germany" or all just a show? The mitgereisten journalists - including representatives of many British newspapers - pursue the pair anyway just because of these rumors during the state visit at every turn.

Boat trip with incident
With a visit to the Church of England on Zeughausmarkt sets the pair continued to visit - the British community in 1987 celebrates its 375-year anniversary. During a visit to the Hanseatic city may not be missing a harbor cruise. Royals are invited to sight-seeing, but not a mundane chugs HADAG steamer on the waters of the Elbe, but the proud, luxurious, blue-white Senate launch "Hamburg". The royal mini cruise in the harbor use left-wing activists from the harbor road as a platform for political slogans: They reveal a banner that reads "Destroy the high security areas - Victory for the IRA" and firing flares at the police. The British media believe the action later as an attack on the Crown Prince Couple and attests to the German authorities, a security problem. Place for relaxation of the German-British relations ensures the royal visit at least medially for new fuel.

Visiting the Lokstedter NDR Studios
Harmonious and peaceful contrast is the visit of the couple from the Lokstedter NDR Studios. The royal couple will get to know an institution with Anglo-German history. On behalf of the occupiers, the British journalist Hugh Greene was in September 1945, the North West German Radio (NWDR) established to reorganize the radio in the British zone of occupation after World War II.
To the men of the first hour was the legendary reporter Peter von Zahn , the Charles and Diana meet in the NDR Studios. He tells them of his good experiences with the British. The children's choir of Finkwarder Speeldeel provides northern German folklore and merriment at the former educator Diana. The studios are decorated with all sorts of British symbolism in honor of the guests. The evening news crew, the then chief Rolf NDR television Seelmann Eggebert and the NDR directorship prove the high visit their honor.
Reception Gala Dinner at City Hall evening there will be festive: Prince Charles and Diana are loaded into City Hall. The more than 400 guests will receive the British princess, who is already recognized as fashion icon, seen in a glamorous outfit. She is wearing a strapless, black lace evening dress to a white, long pearl necklace is a subtle contrast. The guests wear to the Golden Book of the city before the feast begins. Under the ornate coffered ceiling of the hall an opulent meal is served: there is, among other fresh been shot partridge cooked in bacon and strawberries from the Four Lands, which are topped with marinated green almonds. As a tribute to the guests is - according to tradition - as a drop table wine served from the Mosel, the Charles and Diana to have drunk at her wedding in 1981. In speeches Mayor Klaus von Dohnanyi and the Prince of Wales each other with kindness. The following day, the royal couple leaves Hamburg. Some ten years later, Diana is dead "Princess of Hearts" is 1997 in a tragic car accident in Paris killed.

I wonder what the interests was in the countries that she visited?

I wonder what the interests was in the countries that she visited?

I think that would probably depend on when/why she was visiting those countries. Countries she visited as the Princess of Wales - either by herself or with the Prince of Wales would have been undertaken because the governments of those two countries had arranged it. Some (dancing with John Travolta at the White House) she probably enjoyed more than others.

She undertook other visits, after she had separated or divorced from the Prince that were to do with her charitable interests so there would have been interest in seeing the work that was done by the various charities. At least one her visits to Pakistan had the added interest of meeting the family of Dr Khan.

Other countries, of course, she visited because she was on holiday - Spain, USA or the Alpine countries spring to mind. Her interest there was probably the same as other visitors to those countries, sun and sea in the case of Spain, skiing in the case of the Alpine countries and adventure holidays with her sons in the case of the US.

One of the Princess of Wales 1st solo oversea's visits was to the funeral of HSH Princess Grace of Monaco in September 1982.

I meant was there always a frenzy with the country she visited?

I can remember that there was always a great deal of media coverage whenever Diana visited Commonwealth countries and the US, whether with Charles or alone. On official tours she was of course always with Charles.) Frenzy?

Well, she was very much loved from the beginning in countries like Australia and I can remember the buzz of sheer excitement when she appeared for the first time in Sydney and Melbourne (and I have no doubt elsewhere.)

I think outside the Commonwealth Diana was greatly admired and loved. You can see photos of crowds when she visited Europe for example. I don't know whether they were frenzied but they were certainly happy to see Diana, judging by appearances.

Diana had this constantly. I may get in trouble for saying this but I think none of the younger royals can match the love and admiration Diana had from the people anywhere and anytime.

As a Harry fan for a long time I think he has had some especially when he was younger, but in general I think you are right, Kitty.

But with the caveat that it was a very different time, magazine and print media driven. How Diana would have fared in this age of social media I have no idea. Keyboard warriors can be incredibly nasty and callous and I think she would have been made miserable by criticisms.

I saw her several times in real life, the last time when leaving a restaurant in Chelsea shortly before she was killed. There was a young couple who stopped to look at who it was leaving as there was a stir among the passersby.

I was near to them and they both literally had stars in their eyes. I said to them 'She's lovely isn't she?' and they both nodded without taking their eyes off the car in which she was leaving.

She had a stunning effect on strangers who would never actually get to meet her in person, including me, and I don't think that can be duplicated or put on. And as a person who has seen most of the BRF close to, I don't think it has been.
