One person we have not discussed very much has been....ta-dah! Stefano Casiraghi. According to some people Stefano and Caroline's marriage was on the rocks at the time of his death. He was allegedly in trouble with the mafia as well. But, in spite of all of this he seems to have been Caroline's one, true love. She seems comfortable and relaxed with Ernst, but she looked really in love with Casiraghi and no wonder! He wasn't too hard on the eyes, either!

Young Stefano Casiraghi...

Stefano as a little boy...

Stefano and Caroline...

He had a totally romantic sounding name...very cool...Stefano Casiraghi....I agree, Galisteo!!

Glad to see you back!!

Wow, Andrea looks a lot like his father. It is very sad that Caroline lost her one, true love, and that the kids lost their father at such tender ages. I hope Caroline is as happy with Ernst as she was with Stefano.

What was his trouble with the mafia?    I think I read on some board that maybe Rainer didn't care for him, but I only read that once, so it may all just be rumor.
Supposedly he was involved with the italian mafia in business deals. Stephano Casiraghi is said to have shamelessly used his wife's family name in business deals. When he died, he supposedly was part owner in THREE THOUSAND apartments in and around Monaco. After he died, and was buried in Monaco, one night "persons of unknown origin" dug up his grave, and stood his casket up vertically. This is a classic mafia act, and is a message to his surviving family (the Grimaldis). Supposedly the mafia were not pleased with the way his will/estate was being distributed, and wanted the return of shares registered in his name, but actually owned by the mafia.

I suppose it's not surprising if Prince Rainer didn't take too warmly to him.

I haven't read anywhere where it was said that he was a legitimate businessman. I don't know if he was a playboy, but he must have been something of a dilettante given the sport that he was competing in (and which killed him), motorised catamaran racing. It's not really a competitive sport in that there are very very few competitors (the boats are enormously expensive, and they can't be used for anything other than racing). I think he might have picked the sport because there are few competitors, yet offered some glamour. As I recall, he was driving it too fast, he hit a wave wrong, the boat went airborne, flipped over (the boat was travelling upside down in the air at that point), and, at that speed, when the boat hits the water, the water is like concrete, and it more or less decapitated him. I don't think his head came off, but death would have been instant with his neck snapping, i.e. he didn't suffer. Probably never felt a thing. It was over in an instant.

P.S.--Anybody know if there is a site/thread for Philippe Junot? He is currently trying to peddle hedge funds in Paris from what I hear. Also, he wrote some book called "Chatter" back in the late 1980's (1988 if memory serves), where he dished some dirt. It may have only been in Italian. Anybody know anything about the book? Or about a Philippe Junot website/forum? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Thank you for the information. I, also, read about Stefano's coffin being moved upright in the middle of the night. Quite a way to make a point, eh?

I wish I could tell you that I knew of a Junot website but I don't. As far as his book is concerned, I would check the following site: ABEBooks. This is a great used and rare books dealer online. I did a search for Junot and didn't find anything. Having said that this doesn't mean that there isn't something there on him.

When you say 3000 apartments...I wonder how much was his heritage (at least an approximation), and who are/were the heirs (only Caroline, Caroline and the children, just his children, siblings of Stephano)? When Andrea became 18, has he got some of the money then?

Actually, it's not me saying it, it's the Vanity Fair article. And it says that he had a HALF share in all 3,000 apartments, but that it was "widely rumoured" that he was backed by the mafia. It is also in that article where it talks about the gravestone being dug up and the casket stood upright.

It may be that none of it was his heritage, and none of it went to his heirs. From what the article says, it is strongly implies that his ownership of such a large amount of real estate was because he was acting as a nominee for mafia money (at such an early age, usually men don't inherit until their father dies, and Casiraghi's father was still alive). If this was true, then the upturned casket would have been taken very seriously, and I would guess that ownership would have been turned over to some new nominee name of the italian underworld, not given to Stephano's heirs. The Grimaldi's couldn't have stomached the risk of gunmen coming after one of their children, particularly if they knew the gunmen had a legitimate reason for wanting the ownership of the properties back. If Casiraghi was fronting for the mafia, the properties were not his, never were his.
