She is from the German great bourgeoisie. Many were opposed to the fact that a commoner would marry into one of the oldest European family. But critics were shut down after the wedding as she fulfilled her role to the perfection. Ernst and her used to live the high life in London (where she still lives with her two sons). She remains single, is very discreet (never a comment to the press) and spends most of her time in the chicest parties of London society.

Were they happy together for a while?
How long was he faithful for? Was Caroline his first affair?
Was she faithful?
I have so many questions, can anyone give me some insight into their relationship please?

They look so much more relaxed as a couple than Caroline & Ernst do now.
Maybe its the strain of the press always following them.
Ernst seems to just follow his women around doesn't he? At least that's the impression I get.

Lashinka, I'm personally convinced he loved Chantal very much. He did marry her despite all the critics coming from his own social group, that is his friends. He stood for her beautifully. When they were in London there were always talks about the sumptuous presents Ernst would make to Chantal. I think they were happy and if it wasn't for Caroline, they would maybe still be together. But maybe not (when someone in a couple cheat, that's mean there are troubles).
As for other affairs (from Ernst or Chantal), I have no idea. Chantal is even more discreet than Ernst (even after her divorce she conducted a long term affair with a Italian aristocrat with so much discretion that few people were actually aware of it, and that was after her divorce).
So basically I don't know. What I wrote there is about everything I know about Chantal.

Yes, thank you again. I find Ernst a really complex and interesting character -- seems like he might be charming and maddening all in one breath!
