I wonder if the Abbott girls were greeting the Queen instead of Harry would it be a different type of greeting? The Queen has more gravitas than Harry.

I don't know about the Abbot girls specifically, but I think that the individual being the Queen versus the individual being Harry does make all the difference. Even to a lesser degree, the person being Charles or Andrew vs Harry.

A 20-30 something year old is going to (or should) be more deferential to a person in their 50s or 60s than someone around their age (or younger) more by instinct than anything else, particularly if the older person is in a power type position. Someone younger is going to garner less deference, especially if they don't appear to expect it (and Harry often doesn't).

The Queen has an expectation that people will bow to her, as does the DoE and their children. They may not be bothered when people don't do so, but they certainly expect it. When someone like the Abbots meets them they're more likely to bow because they recognize that the Queen, etc, are in an elevated position. As head of state, as representatives of a nation, and so on. With William and Harry it's different because at this point they're more like celebrities who we grew up watching. Yes, they may technically have an elevated position, but the 20 or 30 something doesn't necessarily see it that way. It's kind of like how a 20 something would treat a boss who is in his/her 50s versus a boss who is their own age (minus the power to actually fire them).

I suspect that as William and Harry grow up they'll fall more into the role that Charles and his siblings have. In 20 years the people who are 20 something now will likely have more deference - a 40 something treats their boss who is the same age differently than a 20 something would - and the new 20 something will more instinctively place William and Harry into that higher position, while viewing George much as we view him now.

The same happens with politicians in general. It's part of why parties are often so unsure about supporting younger politicians for big roles.

I know if I was in William & Harry's position, I would expect a bow and curtsey. To me it's all about respect and tradition. Personally, I would lower my head for the Cambridge's and Harry just like I would do for The Queen and other senior royals.

I won't lower my head for any of them as they are no better than I am. I have met The Queen twice and didn't curtsey either time and the first time I was a kid and she was older than my parents but she was just another person who was visiting my school and town at the time. I didn't curtsey to my parents' friends so why curtsey to her. I didn't address her as Your Majesty or Ma'am but just answered her questions and that was all. Second time the same thing - just answered her questions with no formality and if she objected that was her bad luck.

As for William and Harry - they will never have the gravitas of The Queen or Charles because they have been raised differently - their mother taught them to be 'normal' so that means 'Hi' and 'G'day' and none of this curtseying or bowing or Your Royal Highness stuff.

As someone who grew up in Charles' generation - he had gravitas as a school boy and we noticed that even then. William has never had it. The Queen had it as a child as well.

I have no problem with bowing and curtsying. Everytime I meet a Royal, I bow, and I don't feel inferior, I feel that I'm well educated, and that I know how to respect hierarchy.

:previous: Hmmm I am just unable to accept that all this bowing, curtseying, "Your Majesty" etc etc..the real grace of monarchy..will all die out by the time William comes to throne..
Maybe people who are 2 generations behind think its already dead..long ago..
I remember watching something where William was going on tour somewhere and The Sun photographer was with him and remember seeing him address William as Sir. In fact everyone was addressing William as Sir. William is informal but it appears he is not as informal as Harry. :flowers:

I was interested to note the lack of formality from monarchist Tony Abbott and his family. But it could have been worse.....the girls could have greeted him with "G'day".

I think the lack of formality was appropriate though, and I doubt Harry cared one bit.
From what I could tell, it was the Prince who said 'hi'!:flowers:

^^^^ fair play Iluvbertie but you're a republican so everything you you view the monarchy through is from a republican point of view. Thats why you don't curtsey.

When I joined this board I was a monarchist but I am now a republican as far as Australia is concerned. In fact it is this board that opened my eyes to why Australia should be a republic and events like yesterday only reinforced that opinion. Anyone would think, from the coverage, that Harry was the one who took the salute or was the most important person there - he wasn't. That was the GG - and Harry took second place to her.

I was a monarchist when I didn't curtsey as a child or as an adult, in 2006 - on the two occasions I met The Queen.

Is that how the Australian press covering the event? It makes sense for the British press to play up the Harry angle.

I believe it was on a trip to New Zealand and Australia in the aftermath of disasters that had struck both countries when William met with some Australians affected by the disaster. When he was addressed as "Sir", if I remember right, he told them "Just call me William".

I think on this occasion it wasn't just that William was informal but also wanted to stress the fact that it was those Australians that were affected that were the focus of the meeting and not him.

One local report: Cookies must be enabled. | The Australian

It was a big do on the Harbour and Harry was merely a bonus. Sydneysiders love big dos on the Harbour, especially when they involve fireworks. We are programmed to gather on the foreshores to watch stuff happening on the Harbour, especially at holiday time and this is a long weekend.

The October long weekend heralds the change from winter mode to summer mode. The last event of the winter season is the Rugby League football grand final tonight. From now on we wind down towards our silly season and cricket takes over the sporting mind. Christmas decorations have already started appearing in the shops. The next big event is the Melbourne Cup in a few weeks and then the Christmas parties start in earnest and after the first of December nothing much - apart from Christmas celebrations and summer holiday festivities, including another big party on the Harbour on New Year's Eve with two sessions of fireworks - happens at all until Australia Day on 26th January, which heralds the end of the summer season with another big party on the Harbour and more fireworks.

:previous: Sex appeal. Harry is young and attractive and single and commands the attention of lots of young women. Mary and Fred can't compete with that. And here Mary is seen as one of us, not a Dane.

Yes yes we know you don't bow or curtsey to anyone regardless of their position. Good for you, yet many well educated well brought up men and women do not seem to find it problematic to bow to a judge or genuflect to a Cardinal or Archbishop and I have noticed when Frederik and Mary of Denmark make visits to Australia many of your fellow countrymen (many of whom I assume are just as well educated and well brought up as yourself) have no problem bowing to him or dropping a curtsey to her or addressing them both as HRH. If we respect your position on the matter you must respect that others in your country differ on the issue.

a few comments from Brisbane Australia

vkrish, Sunrise is morning tv for the masses. Not what you would call intellectual. So yes it is embarrassing to have them comment in that way. It is the equivalent to a glossy magazine.

Yes I agree some coverage on this program was rather embarrassing especially for me, a fellow Australian. The Australian Press made many good reports about the International Fleet Review but I agree they spent too much time on insignificant events such as standing outside the Sydney Hotel waiting for Harry to leave Sydney and be driven to the airport. One bit of info was Harry was given a clear police escorted passage to the airport (no traffic lights). I'm sure the local Sydney residents would not have been too happy with this but I don't think it lasted very long. Also on this program they showed Harry talking to one of the people in the crowd. He asked them about the One Direction concert which was on Sunday night. The commentators on Sunrise spent a few tiresome minutes discussing the similar name of Prince Harry with Harry in One Direction. These some commentators also spent a few silly moments talking about the "Poop Deck." Wikipedia describes this as
In naval architecture, a poop deck is a deck that forms the roof of a cabin built in the rear, or "aft", part of the superstructure of a ship.
The name originates from the French word for stern, la poupe, from Latin puppis. Thus the poop deck is technically a stern deck, which in sailing ships was usually elevated as the roof of the stern or "after" cabin, also known as the "poop cabin". In sailing ships, with the helmsman at the stern, an elevated position was ideal for both navigation and observation of the crew and sails.[1]
On modern, motorized warships, the ship functions which were once carried out on the poop deck have been moved to the bridge, usually located on the superstructure in the center of the ship or the island on the starboard side in the case of aircraft carriers.

I would also like to include some info from an interview on the Australian Channel 9 news. They interviewed the female captain of one of the ships. She spoke about the need for effective team work and good leadership. She also talked about how females now have the same opportunity as their male counterparts in the Navy. I hope this link works
http://today.ninemsn.com.au/live

Another member of the RAN discussed the years of planning and rehearsal that went into the fleet review, the fireworks spectacular and most importantly the history of the Navy that appeared on the Sydney Opera House.

Years ago when I was a primary school teacher, I took our students to visit HMAS Brisbane and HMAS Hobart. The crew was absolutely wonderful to the students. They explained how the equipment was used and they allowed the students to see many parts of the ship. They gave us afternoon tea with biscuits served on silver trays in the galley. The crew realised we were only joking when they heard a child's voice on the microphone saying "All hands on deck". Some of the students felt very important when the crew was happy to let the students wear their jacket and hat.

I do apologize for the length of my comment.

No need whatsoever for that, as I appreciate long posts like this that explains things I've either didn't know about or have wondered about. So thank you for that.

I thought the Intl Fleet Review held in Halifax a couple of years ago to mark the RCN's 100th Anniversary was a pretty special and spectacular thing to watch, and the CBC did an amazing job of covering it too, but the one held in Sydney today looks to have been more than it's equal. Lovely it was such a gorgeous day to boot too.

Off to check off those RAN links now. :)

There is no comparison. Prince Harry is more popular than Mary by any measure. Mary may Australian but Harry is a member of the BRF and Mary although I'm sure is a lovely person, just can't compare to Harry's rock star status.
Mary would kill for the kind of press attention Harry is receiving in Australia. The BRF is a global brand and Prince Harry is one of the Firm's superstars. Mary and the DRF just can't compete and there is no shame in that.

Eeh, yes. I believe that's what the caption to the pics briefly implied.
I wasn't trying to start a popularity comparison between the BRF and Mary, which is indeed meaningless, merely to show the delightful gallery of Harry.

A 16 pic gallery from BT of Harry in Australia, doing what he is really good at: charming people.
Mere populær end Mary? Australien går Harry-amok | www.bt.dk
I think you'll like the last pic.
You are right, he really is good at charming people and I don't think the BRF underestimate his potential. Harry may be cool but Mary is tres chic so there is variety enough for everyone to drool over.

That being said, that really is a cracker gallery and yes, the last pic is a hoot!

Could please someone give me a hint what to do when one cannot open the pics of bt?! I can see the 2 first photos, after that it stays black...?!:ermm:

Link works fine. Suggest you try again.

Here are direct links to the pics, perhaps you can see this?

Thank you Muhler! I can see the pics perfectly as single files, but it doesn´t work in that BT-Link...?!

I feel like all the stories about his love life overshadowed his entire trip...I hope her friends aren't leaking stories because if they did they pretty much sabotaged his trip. The focus for the last couple of days should of been his time in australia not his love life.

Thank you for the links Muhler. Yes Harry received a great reception and he seemed to enjoy himself.

The blonde ladies behind Harry seemed to be media judging by the accreditation but I have no idea who they are.

And yes the Prime Minister's daughters seemed rather enthused at meeting Harry:)

A right royal month here with M & F due in a few weeks.

The photo of the pro rugger's cross crotch grab was equally arresting - and of course, used in every tabloid.
