The witnesses to the birds being shot out of the sky (you really can't mistake that), would not have known that Harry and his little friend were in the area, it was only the police inquiry that turned that up. If Harry did shoot the birds, the 'carcases are now either buried or taking pride of place on the fireplace in his room.
