Charles II had many mistresses and he was a glorious King.

He may have been a glorious king, but he was definitely an awful husband.

True, that's absolutely true. But,as far as husbands go, there have only been three English kings who qualify as good husbands- George III, George V, and George VI. Whoever proposed Catherine Deneuve, I would love to see that. An older French woman might do him some good.

Was he? He was quite good to Catherine de Braganza considering. If I were a Royal Consort, I wouldn't care one jot what my hubby was up to as long as I was kept in stockings and gin. Love is a nice idea but jewels and palace are even nicer, no matter what one has to do to get them.

Depends on whether you want love or stockings and gin. (er...can I have both?) But you've got a point here, those princesses usually weren't brought up to expect love from their husbands.

I think thats the problem with most of the common wives. They can't accept what Royalty is like behind closed doors. They see the illusion shattered and nobody wants to see that. Personally, I see love as meaning different things to different people.

Well, fortunately enough, things have changed, haven't they? If you look at the modern CPsses - they definitely weren't given away to some prince by their family in exchange for political influence or social prestige. I do think even princes want love nowadays, not political alliances.

Political Alliances no but cover-ups yes. A more socially suitable wife, to provide an heir or to hide a true feeling. What a shock to the world it would be if William was gay. Not that I'm suggesting for one moment that he is. But do you think that people would accept a gay monarch (knowing he was, unlike in the past where it was hidden away).

Hasn't there always been speculation that Albert of Monaco might be gay (given the fact that he has one or two kids I'd say bisexual might be the correct term)? The rumors haven't stopped him from getting the title once his father died.
I think young people would probably accept it if William were gay, as long as he was discreet about it. I don't think they would expect him to marry just to father a child. If it were done cleverly, it wouldn't be the end of the monarchy, I think.

Hmmm. I don't think so myself. The tabloids would have a field day. 'Queen William' headlines would be the form and there would not only be flack from the Church of England, Press etc but young people aren't as accepting as some would have them. All this liberation rubbish and sexual diversity is rubbish. Quentin Crisp on a bus is fine but Quentin Crisp on the throne really wouldn't do as far as the majority would see it. They can't even get over a divorcee let alone a homosexual king.

Yes, but wouldn't it all a matter of sitting it out? Sure, the press would go wild for a while, but after some time they'd get bored with the issue, at least if William avoided being seen while wearing a pink wig and false breasts. If he behaved dignified enough he might even charm old ladies in supporting him. Think of Germany - the mayor of Berlin is gay and so is the head of the Liberal Party. Okay, it's not royalty but it's an official function; and both have managed to gain respect. Wowereit (the mayor of Berlin) even brings his boyfriend to offical functions - and the press love him.

But Mayors etc are elected. There's a choice. The drawing rooms of Belgravia would be filled with white haired old Generals wondering what to do about it. I can just hear the 'poofter' comments rising above the cigar smoke. I don't think people would stand for it but the British never stop suprising me.

Yeah, the British seem to have accepted Camilla, which I'd never have believed a couple of years ago. So there's still room for some more surprises. In case of a gay Prince of Wales, it would be intereresting to watch what would win out - the traditional respect of monarchy (and, let's face it, if you are a royalist, you're supposed to accept whatever crawls out of the royal gene pool) or the traditional horror of homosexuality.

Perhaps we could get back on topic?

And, no, that isn't an invitation to start a thread about finding a toyboy for Prince William.

Sorry Elspeth.

Could we start a serious topic about how royalty has been and could be affected by homosexuals in their ranks?

Sure.

You mean, something along the lines of how far we've progressed since the reign of Edward II?

hear! hear!

i'm sure a lot of posters in this thread are having fun feeling progressive about their attitudes towards marriage.

I can only speak for myself, but I feel as though i'm on a chauvinistic journey into the past.
