After having studied at Harward, Frederik bought a red cadillac and drove across USA (PET was there too). At some point they visited a danish American (with a multitude of kids it seems) and took them for a little drive.
Time passed - no sign of Frederik and the children. PET had not gone with him. Then he showed up. He had merely driven the children to an icecream kiosk and treated them with ice. - Something they obviously appreciated! https://app.box.com/s/93hynn9vthzh2syqj2mq

Well, back in 1997 Frederik was IIRC still in the Frogman Corps and he apparantly didn't have a valet then and anyway the visit was only for a couple of days. So Frederik packed his own suitcases, including socks - without bothering to check whether there were holes.
He would naturally have discovered the holes in Japan, but what the heck, he would be wearing shoes, so who would notice?
Except that he was to attend a Japanese tea ceremony and what do you normally do when you go inside in Japan? :D
He did afterwards state that he regretted he hadn't checked his socks beforehand.

Frederik tells in the book: ..."The comical bit for me was that I arrived suitable attired in suit and tie but completely unprepared for the fact that you have to drop your shoes and sit down on your knees. Back then there weren't so many with me in my entourage and in the morning I had just quickly pulled on som stockings - and then there were holes in them.
The press thought it was hilarious. That here I come, fresh Frederik, and then there are holes in the socks. But I wasn't thrashed as being messy in the papers and there wasn't critique of lacking councelling either. The press-image was more like that it was a hoot, and how good it is that Frederik is human".
But since then he has been more vigilant and he now has servants (a valet) on important trips abroad. You have to look your best in order to show your hosts respect.

- He's got that one right! If there is one thing that can give me the urge to slap people in the back of the heads it's celebs who dress fashionably sloppy because it's about MEEE and not the event or the hosts.

If you didn't know it, you would be forgiven for believing Frederik and Joachim are not brothers. The Sweaters and Jackets were high fashion back the - everybody wore them.

Frederik has a good rapport with the Greenlanders. Here he meets a hunter whom he got to know on an earlier travel:

This picture is from the lodge in Trend, where Queen Ingrid also liked to go. The picture is interesting in the sense that it's one of the few pics at least I have seen of the lodge close up:

This picture is unique. It show QMII and Frederik greeting Cubas Fidel Castro during a UN summit in Copenhagen. It was the first time Fidel Castro was ever seen at such an event without wearing a uniform.
Being the head of state present with the longest seniority protocol dictated that he was seated next to the host QMII. - Should have been interesting! Fidel Castor is known to be very talkative and QMII who represents everything he is against, would certainly not have been intellectually daunted by him. She would, I'm sure, also have been able to quote Karl Marx...

There are a number of pics of M&F together in the book, most of them when on the job though but I'll have a look.
 
Oh any would be amazing to see, Muhler but their early days might be the most interesting since I wasn't around to follow them then and I missed out on that entire period.

But truly, any would be nice to see and much appreciated Muhler!

I enjoyed seeing all these pictures from their early years. I thought I had seen almost all pictures of Frederik and Mary and I have even read the book (which I read in 2 days) and yet I don't remember this lovely picture (this above) of them, so thank you for posting this.

Also enjoyed these lovely pictures. Private pictures (those M+F by themself releases to the public) are always great to look at. I'm so glad that they got a whole year for themselves before the press discovered their relationship.

October 8, 2003 - Today it's exactly ten years since a young Crown Prince Frederik presented his Australian Mary Donaldson to us Danes and the rest of the world of course. I remember that day so clearly and can't believe it's already a decade ago! B.T. and TV2 marks the day with galleries from Mary and Frederik's first ten years together.
