This is the newly appointed Minister for Developement's first visit on the job.
Rasmus Helveg (*) has basically promised the government of Myanmar that a 30 year old loan from DK will be waived. That is old praxis when a country live up to certain standards in regards to political developement. I.e. basic human and political rights. The purpose is that the country, in this case Myanmar, shouldn't be burdened by more problems than necessary in the process of carrying out political reforms.
The loan to be waivered is for 295 million DKK or some 70 million $. There are of course certain criteria to be met and it's basically one of the tasks of the Minister to check that those are met.
- While Mary takes care of the PR side of things.

(*) One of the odd things about DK is that wellknown people like politicians are often referred to by their middle name. In this case Helveg. Presumably because it's easier to tell them apart that way. Don't ask me for a general rule, because I'll owe you an answer for a long time...

One of the main problems in Myanmar is that the subject of sex and contraception is a big taboo. It is simply not talked about. as such young people lack a basic understanding of what it even means to engage in a sexual relationship. The results are teenage pregnancies (and of course a basic knowledge let alone knowledge about the symptoms of sexually transmitted deseases as well).

In the video Mary talks about how she is going to learn from the mouths of the youth workers themselves about the problems they face and what issues they discuss, or rather have problems taking up.

Myanmar is opening up for tourism. (And we all know what it means when a poor country opens up for tourists, the sex industry opens up as well).

Billedbladet informs us that Mary landed in Myanmar this morning local time. After a few hours at the hotel where she changed clothes, etc. the official program began... I hope she is one of those who can sleep in an airplane :coffee:

Look forward to follow the three days in Myanmar, it's an interesting country with problems that need to be highlighted. And then this is the first trip together with Denmark's new minister for Development.

Another thing... Mary looks nice and healthy. And like to see princesses sitting cross-legged in casual flower pants, t-shirt and bare feet and discussing sex and contraception with the young people, which is two large taboos in the country. It doesn't happen so often.

Mary looks good in the twitter photos.

Sleeping on the plane; no problem at all when you travel first class like Mary does! Just stretch out on the comfy seat-come-bed, and snore away.

Good coverage in tonights news on both of our largest main channels. Both the DR1 and TV2 news has a journalist and photographer with Mary in Myanmar and Mary were interviewed underway in the clips.

As far as I know, TV2 don't put their news online any longer, but here you can find the clip from DR1

Mary landed in Myanmar early Friday morning after a stopover in Bangkok Airport during the night.
Naturally and straightforward Mary asked about the young people's sexual habits:
- "Is it the girls who must take responsibility for contraception in a sexual relationship?"
- "Have the young people access to contraception at all?"
The straightforward question sparked some giggling among the young people, who aren't used to talk free about that topic. Mary told the youth about her experiences from trips to Africa, where there are many myths about that use of condoms can make young men infertile. That myth could the youth people recognize very well and together they got themselves some good laughs in spite of the very serious topic.
Mary: "There has to be options so both boys and girls can protect themselves. You need knowledge to make the right decisions."

After her visit to the temple in the morning, Mary has according to the program been to meetings the rest of the day, so I actually didn't expect more pictures from today. So I guess the last pictures may be from an unofficial visit? It isn't listed in the program.

But can see Billedbladet writes about the private visit as well:

They write that after Mary had visited the temple she and the Danish delegation (and Billedbladet and the others journalists) together flew to the northern Myanmar. There the Danish Refugee Council works (which Mary is patron of) with protection of internally displaced persons and especially women and children. Soon after they all had arrived to a modest hotel Mary and Minister Rasmus Helveg went off to have a look at the harsh conditions in and around Sittwe. I guess it's from there the last pictures from today are from.

this is typical mary .. never afraid to break the protocol or doing the things a bit more informal for makes people feel comfortable with all the press around, she is wonderful. you cam hear in the videoclip poster earlier the young boys and girls find it so cool ;-)

The camp also has a kindergarten, and Mary brought along some teddy bears and games for the children.

I noticed quite a number of people in the pictures have something on their faces. First I thought It might some kind of sunscreen but that doesn't seem to be the case. Does anyone know if this is some local costum?

Tonight's first evening news has just been shown on TV and Mary's visit in the two camps were good covered.

Mary: "I met a woman. 23 year old. And she has nine children to look after. That's a lot. She has no other source of income than a little shop here in the camp and the emergency relief isn't enough when you have so many children."

Yes it's a Burmese costum (and also one of the most sold souvenirs for tourists :)). It's called Thanaka. Thanaka - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I knew someone could inform us.

Both Mary and Frederik were well featured tonight on TV2 news at 19.00.

Mary about her trip to the refugee camp. The plight of the refugees is not made easier by the fact that the Myanmar government do not recognice them as refugees but as illegal immigrants.

Frederik was in the town of Herning tonight to attend the first handball match. I must confess I don't follow handball much, so I'll leave it to those who are interested to provide background info. (*)
But Frederik said that the family will when they are all together again later this week follow the matches on TV as far as possible. That includes Christian who seems to be bitten by a sports-bug.

(*) I've never understood the deeper purpose of handball. A group of people grab a ball run a short distance to the opponents goal. Toss the ball around a few times before they score. Then the opponents get the ball and the whole thing repeat itself in the other end.
Why not take turns throwing the ball against the opponents goal for 2x30 minutes? I mean, where's the tactic? Where's the play? Where are the subleties? Surely you'll agree that this cannot be compared to the noble game of football.

Centered on the the little crying boy, Jamal Huson, who Mary comforted. He told her that he has lost both his mother and father. The mother died when their house burned down and his father was shot. It's some hard fates these children can tell about!

B.T's photographer in Myanmar tells: "As he tells his story, he begins to cry. You could see the Crown Princess was very concerned. It was definitely one of the most touching moments of the trip."

Is the boy living in a camp or does the story say? So very sad, and think how many have similar stories.
 
As Muhler already have mentioned the trip was very well covered in our news again tonight on both DR1 and TV2. The day's biggest news broadcasts (always at 7pm) both had several minutes long and informative clips. Both Mary and our Minister for Development were interviewed.

All in all, this trip has got a impressive coverage!

Because of the time difference (Myanmar is 6 hours ahead of Danish time) I guess Mary within relatively few hours will be back home in Denmark.
