it is.

Guess not. But then he would have completed a HALO jump-course to even become a fully fledged Frogman, and that's more advanced than free-fall jump wings. So this I think trumps the red wings.

HALO - High Altitude Low Opening = Jumping from say eight kilometers, preferably remaining undetected, then opening the parachute at as low an altitude as possible, before steering the parachute down to where they want to land. Usually at night.

Okay, I know Frederik was in kicking-tire-mode due to the new helicopters and he's also a navy-man, and things are more relaxed in the navy... but keep your hands out of your pockets.
That would never have happened in the army.

It is. And he is indeed the Defense Chief. Good grief!

"Taking cover" a few times in a muddy ditch would serve him well.

If you'll excuse me I'll go and cry myself to sleep.

Right, this is for nerds, so I guess few will read it, but here we go.

Why is DK, or rather the Danish navy buying Sea Hawk helicopters?

The reason is simple. The old and faithful and very dependable Sea Lynx helicopter used aboard ships are simply worn out after many years of good service.
Here is a Sea Lynx: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...18-Lynx-01.jpg
Beautiful, isn't it?
Very fast indeed and very dependable. But it isn't well suited for night operations and it's not the best suited for rescue operations on open sea either. And given it's limited size it can carry a stretcher but not much else.
And for operations against pirates, it can't carry more than at most four special forces soldiers to be deployed quickly to a ship.
And while it routinely carry a machine gun in the door, that's pretty much the only thing it can do. It's either a machine gun or special forces.
The Sea Lynx were designed to carry torpedoes but that's way too dangerous and hardly needed when controlling foreign trawlers around Greenland.
However, it's so fast, it can be on top of pirates before they can spit out the khat they are chewing!

So what's the alternative?
The EH101, used by the air-force (and army)?
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped..._zj123_arp.jpg
Well, it's huge! Several meters longer than the Sea Hawk. And as such takes up way too much space on the inspection frigates operating in the North Atlantic, where every centimeter matters. Also, the EH101 require a good deal of maintenance. And that means fully supplied bases nearby, also a problem in the North Atlantic.

Then there is the Fennec used by the army.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...ec_siku_07.JPG
Very fast, very reliable, but just like the Lynx too small.

So the choice fell on the Sea Hawk.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...e_approach.jpg
It has the right size, the right range and it works!
In contrast to the Lynx, the Sea Hawk is not as fast, but it can operate at night. It's very well suited to conduct rescue operations on open sea.
It can carry larger door mounted weapons while at the same time being able to deploy special forces.
It can carry several stretchers with room for a working doctor and relatives. And that means a lot when transporting a sick or injured person to hospital on the Faeroe Islands or from deep inside Greenlandic fjords.
It can also carry a considerable load, like a generator or whatever may be needed in a hamlet that has been isolated by ice or bad weather.
And last but by no means least: Since lots of Sea Hawks are operating all over the world, there is no shortage of spare parts or mechanics.

So the next time the DRF will visit Greenland and the Faeroe Islands we are more than likely to see them being flown around in a Sea Hawk.

Thanks for all the pictures, links and information from today.

Beautiful weather again today to the receipt of the new helicopters! And our Crown Prince Frederik in uniform on a frigate with blue sky and full sun - it hardly gets better

He looks to enjoy it to the full - does anybody know if Frederik can fly a helicopter himself?

Nice pictures! And Frederik looks really great.

The School Olympic is a good idea.

If any should be in doubt about how popular and beloved Crown Prince Frederik is, then just watch the videoes from today

It's again one of Frederik's and Mary's great strengths:
They are popular in all age groups; Children, the youth, the adults and the elderly.

Knowing that the sight of Frederik in uniform has the ability to make otherwise sensible women go gaga, I thought some would appreciate these four pics of Frederik and the Seahawk helicopter.
Very large files!

The civilian personage close to Frederik is the Minister of Defense, and the yellow ribbon he is wearing on his lapel is to remember those who are deployed abroad.

Thanks, Polyesco.

Plastic in the oceans is a serious problem!
There are now several areas in the oceans the size of a medium sized countries consisting of a plastic soup of small and larger pieces of plastic and semi-degrade plastic. Due to the currents they don't go anywhere. Instead they circle slowly while growing bigger and bigger. Plastic is eventually degraded but it takes decades in some cases centuries.
And in the meantime microscopic pieces of plastic enter the food chain and as it can't be digested fish end up dying from starvation.
Clear plastic bags are a serious threat to tortoises. They have been around for millions of years, but they haven't learned to distinguish between plastic and a delicious jelly-fish...

There have been ideas about developing bacteria that can feed on plastic. But preferably only discarded plastic, otherwise we may end up with an even bigger problem.

Fortunately the trend is going towards producing rapidly degrading plastic that doesn't harm the nature.
And didn't California recently ban plastic bags?

No to forget:
Earlier this year, The Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary's Foundation donated 200,000 Danish Kroner To The Expedition 'Plastic Change' which in the autumn will sail off on an expedition into the big plastic soup in the Pacific.

OT, but for those interested, this is another initiative to clean up plastic from the oceans The Ocean Cleanup, developing technologies to extract, prevent and intercept plastic pollution
