Crown Prince Frederik & Crown Princess Mary's Visit to Australia: October 24-28, 2013

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Reports are coming in that M and F's visit to Winmalee, in the fire zone, has been a big morale booster for those affected.

The fire-fighters and residents gave the Royal Couple a hip, hip, hooray greeting - and there were so many flowers for CP Mary, she needed to call on help to handle them.

A morning tea of scones, sandwiches and fruit was held at the local fire station - of which the Royal Couple were also given a tour by the Rural Fire Commissioner himself.

After spending time with the crowds, M and F were also taken to one of the worst affected streets to see the devastation for themselves.

The NSW Premier was also present.

There are photos now - on the "Sydney Morning Herald" website among others.

Cheers, Sun Lion.

Im so glad they went to visit those affected and the firefighters.

"Locals say the visit has lifted morale and brought smiles to the faces of those affected by the fires."

A huge moral booster after the royal visit
Princess Mary visit boosts morale after 'week from hell'

"For Emma Parade residents Julie and Michael Magennis, who watched their street go up in smoke, the royal visit was a much-needed lift.

"It's the first time I have seen my wife smile in more than a week - we're still trying to come to terms with it," he said."

Great that Frederik and Mary took their free time to go visit. Its nice that for even a few minutes the residents got to smile :flowers:

The Royal Couple's visit to Winmalee is the first report on tonight's Channel 10 news.

(5.00pm at the moment. Other channels have their news in an hour.)

CP Mary waving away the flies from her face, as well as waving to the crowd. :ROFLMAO:

("Don't forget the Areogard" Mary. Guess it's not needed much in Denmark.)

"Bloody awesome", "can't put a price on just how uplifting their presence" - locals "overwhelmed" - some of the coments.

M and F shook the hands of every single fire-fighter present.

Cheers, Sun Lion.

You're welcome Tarlita.

I expect it will be the first or second story on the other channels, at 6.00pm, as well - and probably ABC at 7.00pm.

(Have you seen the ABC's video report released on the internet a few hours ago?)

Pretty important for Aussies.

Cheers, Sun Lion.

How marvellous - just saw all the speeches.

Thank you so much for this polyesco.

Sun Lion. :flowers::flowers::flowers:

polyesco - my husband stopped what he was doing, when he heard me on the live-stream, and has routed it through our T.V. ! and is wrapped up in it all - so thank you again.

(Hopefully CP Mary's speech will get to you-tube for those who missed her. She spoke very well. Jan Utzorn was moved by it all during his speech I think - and rightly so, lovely man.)

All the speeches were very good - covering different areas.

Sun Lion.

(CP Mary will be cold in that lightweight coat. There is a very chill wind tonight.)

What some touching pictures and articles to wake up to!

So lovely to hear how many smiles and how much joy and not least encouragement Frederik and Mary brought to all the people and firemen in the middle of their "hell from week". And they are good at it F+M - they show up in jeans, sneakers & a cardy wrapped around their waistand - they are at eye level with people. A absolutely touching visit.

"It's the first time I have seen my wife smile in more than a week - we're still trying to come to terms with it,"

"I saw my daughter-in-law smile for the first time since she lost everything. She was over the moon," said one woman"

Mary: "I am so glad I can bring a smile to your face. I can't imagine what it must have been like."

ADDED:

I can see the visit has been very important for people - it's the main story and the 'most read article' in the big Australian media.

Just watched the lead story of Fred and Mary visiting Winmalee a bushfire area, and the volunteers and locals on ch10. Then turned over to ch ABC 24 and they showed Mary giving a speech at the Opera house then Jan Utzon (son of the Danish Architect) give a speech then they showed a little of Fred and Mary at Winmalee. Good coverage from this media source. A huge crowd were at the Opera House for Marys speech.

I remember reading years ago how the Australian media underestimated the value of Mary Donaldson marrying into the DRF in 2004. They haven't underestimated the power of this couple since with the Australian People. Mary & Fred will always be popular here.

Thanks for the pics, clips and articles. :flowers:

And thanks to our resident Aussies for your coverage and not least to Sun Lion, it's like having our own board-reporter on the spot. :flowers:

As a Dane I am very pleased that M&F are getting such a positive coverage. Proud is such a strong word, but they do make me proud.

They are simply a fantastic team. We already know that, but here we really see it.

Frederik has behaved perfectly IMO. He has consistently dispensed with formalities and allowed Mary to take center-stage, while beaming like a lighthouse when looking at his wife.
And showing pics of his own twins to some children was simply a stroke of genius. - Even though I'm convinced that it wasn't deliberate.

And finally but by no means least: My deepest sympathy to those who have lost homes - and worse - in the fires.

You're very, very welcome Muhler. It's been not just a pleasure to be able to share things here, but actually a very great deal of fun. I'll be a bit down when it's all over.

I think the bonds between Denmark and Australia will only deepen and strenghten as time goes on.

(Even my husband - not a royal watcher - talks about going to Denmark when we go travelling, hopefully next year, and I think it's because of CP Mary.)

Are you watching the live steam of the Gala Concert?

My husband stopped doing his paper-work and set up our television to be able to watch it on that.

They're just starting the last part of Beethoven's 9th Symphony - "Ode to Joy". Played at the Opera House at it's opening 40 years ago.

Cheers, Sun Lion.

We got to see the fire-works twice!

As the live-feed was showing the "Happy Birthday", the fire-works blew off here, rattling our windows, and then just as they stopped in real-life, they started on the broadcast. Hip, hip, hooray!

Sun Lion.

The same here. Think we sadly have missed Mary's speech.

Hi Roskilde - I just saw on the Sydney Opera House website, accessed through polyesco's link, that the Gala Concert has just been uploaded to be viewed again.

Must be a lot of traffic or something, taking a long time to download, but hopefully it will be the full program and CP Mary's speech will be there.

P.S. Worth watching Louise Herron's speech also if you didnt see it.

Cheers, Sun Lion. :flowers:

Sun Lion, good to see you again :)

Thank you for your references to the documentaries about Utzon and his work on the Sidney Opera; over the years, I've seen a number of documentaries about the proces in Danish television and I would love to see these as well (just spent another hour googling your references and getting absorbed in the tales of the work and politics surrounding the construction of the opera).

Hi UserDane - we have just been watching the Gala Concert via polyesco's link, and my husband just saw one of the documentaries - "Autopsy On a Dream" - is on that same site - if you weren't able to access it in full last week.

Cheers, Sun Lion. :flowers:

I saw Mr Utzon's speech too Tarlita.

I think he was very moved by this celebration of his father's work. Very fittingly done. The whole occassion was "right on the money" re tone, performers, speeches, etc.

A memorable occassion.

P.S. Just saw a photo of Frederik kissing Mary while they were sitting in their seats. :winkiss:

(Oh, just seen it here too, posted by you Roskilde. Nice moment captured by an alert photographer.)

Cheers, Sun Lion.

Just got the Gala Concert again - via polyesco's link - if you want to see CP Mary's speech.

(Mary comes on straight after Louise Herron - who is the lady with the bob and glasses - and just before Marie Bashir.)

P.S. you can see how much the wind is blowing as people take their seats - and it was a chilly wind too.

Gosh this post reads like one upmanship. Sorry.

P.S. Wouldn't be suprised if M and F get up early for a jog across the Harbour Bridge or around the Botanical Gardens - heard that's happended in New York, Rio etc.

So maybe M and F did get some jogging in that we didn't hear about.

(CP Mary brought her running shoes with her to Australia. She wore them today when visiting the fire zone.)

Cheers, Sun Lion. :D

P.S. you're very welcome Roskilde. I thought the speeches really set the foundation for the following action.

You are absolutely right, Tarlita.

The Sydney Opera is so iconic that I too think it's the most wellknown.
And indeed the fireworks in Sydney with the opera house is almost guaranteed on TV here in DK on New Years Day.

ADDED: Thanks for the clips, Dazzling.

Mary said that they were very impressed with the brave effort by the firefighters and the communty spirit displayed by the residents.
Her accent was more pronounced than usual here. I guess after being surrounded by English speakers she was in the process of making the lingual switch back to Danish.

Huge News!

The BBC News just had a video clip of Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik visiting the area that was badly affected by the fires! The video came on right after a video on the 40th birthday of the Sydney Opera House!

Imagine that...a story about CP Frederik and CP Mary on the BBC News!!!!
They have received major press attention on this trip!

Massive winds and torrential rain pounding Sydney at the moment.

Pitch black outside-it's just coming up to 5.00am here in Sydney -and the weather angels who were guarding Sydney for M and F's visit have stood aside and the Heaven's have opended.

The poor palm tree outside my balcony is being tossed about all over the place.

We haven't had rain like this since June, and not with this sort of wind. Really intense downpour.Hope it blows inland enough - it's coming in from the sea - to reach the fires in the mountains.

(Thank goodness it didn't happen a few hours ago during the Gala Concert!)

Great news Terri Terri - shows the importance of this whole visit by M and F.

Sun Lion.

Are the Tunis with them to australia?

Hi Josefine - too long a way to come, and too short a visit.

CP Frederik was seen showing the latest photos of the twins to a little boy -yesterday or Friday -it's in a post a bit further back.

CP Mary got to catch up with her sisters and friends.

Sister Jane was quoted by the media as saying M and F were vey busy, but they had time to chat with them over breakfast.

(They are here from Tasmania. In fact, I got to meet them on Friday. There is a post about it a few pages back.)

Cheers, Sun Lion.

Patricia, John and Jane - all Mary's siblings visited the the Gala Concert tonight. Lovely!

Hi Roskilde. Good for them - and good ALL the siblngs could get together and spend time away from the routine demands of home and work.

Lovely memories for them all, being made.

Thank you for the photo. :flowers: (Patricia looks a little shy. I noticed the same on Friday when I met them - me too, takes one to know one. Lovely people.)

Cheers, Sun Lion.

A clip of M&F visiting the fire devastated areas of the Blue Mountains: Princess Mary and her Prince boost the sprits of fire devasted communities - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

A quick glance of the list of news on Google seems to indicate that this particular part of the visit has recieved an even more massive attention in the Australian press - Just as it has here in DK.
There was a clip (two actually) of M&F visiting the area (and later in the OperaHouse) on TV2 news at 19.00. - And here THE news reporter Ulla Terkelsen asked M&F what they thought of the fires and those affected. Mary was close to tearing up, when she referred to those (fortunately few) who had perished. - I'm sure that clip will surface soon.

- It's good if a storm will help fighting the fires. We are expecting a severe storm here in DK tomorrow as well.

Dear Sun Lion, Please send some of that rain up here to Qld, we are as dry as dust up here. Need rain very badly west of Brisbane. Even the pot plants have gone walkabout looking for a decent drink. Many thanks to all who have posted great links/photos and information. So glad that Mary got to spend some time with her sisters and brother.

Maybe it's on it's way Tarlita - :lol::lol::lol: - it's certainly gone from here.

Starting to heat up again, no wind, some heavy clouds about, but blue sky and sunshine breaking through every now and then. I think it won't be a problem for the final day.

"New Idea" and "Women's Day" out today. Expecting little Prince George to be the cover with his big day, but hopefully good coverage of M and F.

(They should be up on the internet in about 1/2 an hour - usually there by 9.00am each Monday.)

Also, keep an eye out for the UK glossy magazine "Royalty" in a month or so. They had wonderful coverage of the 2011 visit, probably will again. A nice souvenir.

Cheers, Sun Lion.

Just checked - "Woman's Day" already up. Little George got the whole cover to himself. Well done little Prince.
Sun Lion.

"Mary in Sydney" second story - I'll have a look at the magazines when I'm out and about for M and F's final Opera House event around noon.

Nice photos from last Thursday's first Opera House event, plus video, on "Woman's Day" magazine site.

(P.S. Clarification re comment above - Prince George is actually in his mother's arms, with no other stories on the cover of "Woman's Day". On "New Idea" 's cover, he has "competition" from some other personalities.)

"New Idea" now up on internet too.

Cover is of George again of course - looking like he enjoyed his big day out.

Cheers, Sun Lion.

Must be a big week for these two magazines - they're never usually on the internet this early on a Monday.

(Probably expecting bumper sales too and printed extra issues. Big, big royal week.)

Great news, I'm a proud little Dane at home here in Denmark.

The TV2 clip I referred to earlier. Mary dybt berørt af skovbrande i Australien | GO'
Quite a lot of it is in English.

At 1:03 Mary is referring to those who lost their lives and she becomes emotional.

I missed our news tonight, so thanks Muhler :flowers:

I look forward to the Crown Prince Couple's Prices tomorrow night. It will be broadcasted in prime time (8:00 pm) on one of our biggest tv-channels DR1.

Australians have to wait until Friday Roskilde to see this - must be going to be conducted in Danish and we need time to get the sub-titles sorted.

Morning TV has a couple of hosts - female - chatting about CP Mary's accent, (when speaking English). They were at an "intimate lunch" with her on Saturday. Saying how "approachable" she is.

Cheer, Sun Lion.

P.S. Not sure if they meant it was actually "intimate", or were implying it was far from intimate, with masses of attendees. (Sounds like a "women in Australian business/media" lunch to me - haven't seen anything "official" about it.)

TV reporting that the Royal Couple are flying out of Australia tonight, after the "Prizes" event.

Thank you so much for your 'sun lion on the spot' reporting, it makes the visit seem so immediate and wonderful to follow events at the other end of the world (I am in Toronto). glad to read about the rain, that I am sure is needed. your observation about the Donaldson siblings catching up briefly at breakfast makes me wonder at the Crown princess' courage and strength in deciding to leave a home where she is so much loved to start a new life in far off Denmark. perhaps the Crown princely kiss at the opera house was also meant as reminder that mary belongs to him and Denmark now:flowers:
