After bidding a ceremonial farewell to her family and her royal title at the weekend, the former Princess Sayako of Japan tied the knot with her 40-year-old urban planner fiancé, Yoshiki Kuroda, on Tuesday.
Dressed in a simple Western-style wedding gown, accessorised with a string of pearls, the emperor's only daughter walked a few paces behind her intended as the couple approached the specially built Shinto altar in a top Tokyo hotel.......

TUTORED BY PARENTS FOR THE OUTSIDE
Princess enters the world of cooking and cleaning
Cooking, cleaning, driving, shopping at supermarkets and possibly taking out the trash -- Princess Nori's marriage Tuesday to Tokyo Metropolitan Government employee Yoshiki Kuroda opens the door to a new life as a commoner and homemaker
But her aides and friends said they are not too concerned about the future of the former princess, who has been cloistered inside the Imperial Palace for 36 years, citing the way Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko raised their only daughter.......

I found her absolutely lovely. Extravagence and jewels do not always equal elegance, IMHO. I found her truly elegant in both her dress and manner.

Princess Nori of Japan begins new life as plain Mrs Kuroda
Princess Nori of Japan has left behind the world's oldest hereditary monarchy for life with a bureaucrat in a rented Tokyo apartment.
The 36-year-old princess, who will now be known simply as Mrs Sayako Kuroda, surrendered her title and status to marry the commoner Yoshiki Kuroda, a middle-aged Tokyo government official she met as a child........

It is sad that she has to give up being a princess just because she married a commoner.
She must truly love him to make such a sacrifice.
I wish them all the happiness in the world :)

Approximately 9475 people wrote their congrats at the Imperial Palace from 10am to 2pm on Nov. 15, 2005.

The Tokyo police will provide 24 hours protection to Sayako Kuroda for at least the first half year after her marriage.

I really liked the simplicity of her dress and that single strand of pearls. It carried a touch of regal but she looked like a normal bride. She was very elegant. I loved her Kimono(spelling?). She looked lovely in it. It truely is a huge sacrifice for love. Its kind of a backwork fairytale. The princess to pauper all in the name of love.

If she is getting 1.3M from the government, that would hardly put her in the pauper class.

i hope not so too...
i think as it weird for the princess, it is even weirder for mr.kuroda. he looked not really confident, but protocol is still protocol...
i hope after this they'll get a chance to relax and just be with each other.
but really, hopefully we'll still get a chance to see princess sayako & her new husband on family events. :) :)

it's tradition...what can you say about that? back then i remember my grandma has to walk a few steps behind my grandfather.....it's just traditions/ protocol for japanese, chinese, and koreans! women has a lower rank than men

i just have one question.....sayako is a princess while she came into the wedding place...so shouldn't she has priority (as in she would go first?) i know it's a weird question...but...aha....why not?

If a Princess becomes a commoner when she marries a commoner.
Does a Prince become a commoner if he marries a commoner???

She looks lovely indeed. And it's great to see Masako after such a long time.:)

I heard in the news here in Brazil that Sayako spent last year learning how to cook, how to shop in the supermarket and that she also took her driver's license.

Yah,she did Anna, and the Empress had prepared all for her for a new life, which maybe really hard for her at first but may her love being stronger and she can do it well and having a happy life with her husband.:)

It would be interesting to look at how life can change from being a royal to a commoner.
I know it's a tradition and i totally respect that, but it's quite harsh for Sayako. i mean, what did they expect from her? marry another royal? probably between european royals, it's not a really big problem, but considering how few royals in Asia, it's quite an impossible thing. I'm really hoping she's happy with the man she has chosen and doesn't suffer from any mental dissorder (like princess masako).

i know Japan is very different from most european monarchies and i guess, the tradition is what makes Japan unique.
but, like Cristina & Elena of Spain, or Martha-Louise of Norway, i really hope Sayako doesn't dissapear from the media. i really hope not...

ps. i'm really sorry if any of my comments offend anyone. i didn't mean to...

The Imperial Household Agency formally recorded her departure from the imperial family on Wednesday, November 16, 2005.

I myself disagree with the fact that the former princess had to give up her title, in a time, that they think about making the daughter of the cp and cpss empress....

So do I. She is born a princess, how can they demote her? Maybe it is her choice.

no, the good example is the emperor himself and also his two sons:), all of them marry a commoner lady.

They might have to think about changing that soon then! :p
