That pouffy thing at the bottom is just awful. Otherwise, she was lovely.

I was wondering that too… both the civil wedding (in Sélestat) and the religious ceremony (in Versailles) took place in France… perhaps because the bride is French?

I assume the background of the bride was the reason indeed. But it is strange still for a dynastic marriage, as for example Prince Joachims first marriage also didn't take part in Hong Kong.

I've never liked the bottom of her gown, but it's actually not so bad when you look at it from the back. I thought her veil and especially her bouquet were the most beautiful I'd ever seen.
I remember reading a rumor in W magazine that Marie-Chantal Miller's family wanted to top this wedding (and the dress) when she married the following year.

The bottom of her dress ruined the look for me. Everything else was beautiful.

Valentino is such a master that I've always struggled to understand what might have been his inspiration for this dress. It seems to be something like a shepherdess, given the buttoned corset that cuts the bride's bust in half, and that (unfortunate) bombé ruching around the perimeter of the skirt. This is far from his most successful design, IMO... except for the veil, which is lovely. I'd go as far as to say that the dress is perhaps a bit costume-y. Bride-as-upscale shepherdess.

Fortunately, by the time that Maxima got married in 2002, Valentino had sorted himself out and produced a stunning design!

I'm a big fan of Valentino's designs, as well. I loved the dresses he made for Maxima and Marie Chantal. Sibilla's dress is really unique and the details are gorgeous. The corseted bodice is exquisite. I can see how you find it a little costume-y. I think that's what I like about it. It's so dramatic. The ruffle at the bottom doesn't bother me, although if it were gone, I would like the dress even better. And the veil is to die for. In all, it's a very old-fashioned and romantic dress.
