Prince Carl Philip of Sweden and Sofia Hellqvist: June 13, 2015

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Hello Miss Byrd and xenobia - nice to hear from other musicians. We could probably have our own thread about weddings and music, since we approach them from a different point of view. And depending on how the church is configured, we often have a close up and personal view of the ceremony.

There are numerous internet discussion boards for church musicians - let me know if you're interested in any. I belong to two, and enjoy them very much.

It looks like the King and Queen had a good time good for them it was a great day for them all.

Royal Order of the Seraphim

Someone asked if Sofia would receive this on her Wedding Day?

Is it similar to the Royal Orders the Queen gives to members of her family (UK)? Where they wear a ribbon/brooch studded with diamonds of the current Monarch?

Sofia has the same name as the FORMER QUEEN OF SPAIN! - QUEEN SOFIA!

Is the UK equivalent of the name SOPHIE?

Posts about commoners vs. royals as brides/grooms has been moved to the General Discussion forum. You can find the topic here.

Missing kings

Thanks for all your posts. Does anyone know why the Dutch and Belgian kings did not attend the wedding?

Frederik, Mary and Maxima enjoyed each other while waiting for the bride ang groom:

Reminds me about when Frederik photographed Mary and Maxima at Victoria's wedding and he whistled to the ladies as he took the picture :D

About the Order of the Seraphim
"The king has decided not to give it to Sofia in connection with the wedding. She will get it most likely later some time", says the press information officer Ulrika Näsholm.

Apparently she didn't get it because you can't wear it together with a wedding dress

The composer needs some exposure so he is yelling about this.

No. It was a friend of the composer who made him aware of this. It's an economical issue. He should get paid (STIM-pengar, in swedish) for his work.

So Sofia has received the full batch of titles - Her Royal Highness, Duchess of Värmland, Princess of Sweden. She is now Sofia (Kristina) Bernadotte and has her own monogram, awesome.
I have never seen a more in love and warm couple, it was a perfect wedding.

I could not agree with you more. The most relaxed couple I've seen out of the whole royal bunch lately (with possibly the exception of Guillaume and Stephanie). May they have a long and happy union.

They have now admitted that it was wrong to not give Warren credit for the arrangement. I hope this means that he will get the economical compensation that he is entitled to.

it's been a busy, hectic and stressful few days around here, so only getting to this now...

For those who have questioned the 'class' of the wedding pair, I think it shows a lack of class to harshly criticize a couple on their wedding day.

:previous: Hear, hear!
There will be plenty of time to critize them in years to come, if you want to. Give them a pass on their wedding day. And if you don't want to do that, please let us who want to share their joy and happiness do so without having to read all the negativity in this thread. Save that for another thread, another day.

Thanks to the both of you. I was prepared for some negative posts considering how some view Sofia, but Good Grief!! Talk about over the top down right venom and....Sad.

I'd love to know what Sophie and the Queens are discussing!

I know and I love the expression on Queen Margarethe's face, not to mention the way she's leaning down to Sophie. The whole thing just screams Major Dish Session Going On, So Do NOT Interrupt Us Or Else!!! :D. One of my favourite pictures from Saturday. :)

She seemed a bit off to me throughout the whole thing, like maybe she was injured or something. She wobbled or limped a bit on the orange carpet on the way to the church. She seemed to be leaning heavily on the stone railing of the staircase while they were lining up for the large group photo. And somewhere I saw a photo that looked she was sitting down on a gold chair, with Mary and possible Frederick talking to her.

As was pointed out by another poster, Queen Margarethe suffers from rather serious back issues that have really become noticeable the last few years. While I've been lucky not to be affected w/serious back issues over the years, I do have serious foot and knee problems and walking and standing, not easy at all at times. So Her Majesty has my sympathy for what she's having to deal w/in a very public manner. :(

:previous:Oh my God...YES!! That tiara!! What was I thinking??

And those delicious, exquisite babies Lenore and Estelle.....:whistling:

Yes...Let's talk about that gorgeous sparkling Wedding Present from Their Majesties, shall we? :D. I think that was the big surprise of the Wedding IMO and what a gorgeous surprise it was too. It really is a very pretty design. Delicate, yet also substantial. A nice size that works w/her "place or status" (for lack of a better term) in the Family, as it's not too big or too small either. It also has a nice subtle splash of colour w/the Emeralds. It just really works. My only complaint, and it's the only one of how the new Princess looked that I have, is I wish she'd wore it more on an angle instead of flat like a crown. IMO it would have looked far better on an angle, but that really is a minor quibble and more how I think a Tiara should be worn than anything. :)

I loved how seeing Estelle coming down the aisle, Victoria needed her hanky. Such a special moment that was and she, as well as the other Bridal Party Members, looked lovely IMO. Speaking of little Swedish Princesses... :D. I think I 'm going to have to start calling Leonore by the female version of what we call Prince George : Wee Miss Wiggle Worm. My Goodness at one point I think she literally went from Daddy to Mamma to Uncle Daniel to Auntie Victoria to Granny w/in a five minute time fame...LOL!! She certainly is a very busy young lady and ITA that she did seem to settle the most w/Daniel. Not for long mind you, but it happened. :)

For some strange reason, I'm going to try once more to inform everyone about weddings in Swedish tradition, *snip*

Thank you for that. It sounds a lot like an United Church of Canada Wedding Service.

As a church organist, I have played for more weddings than I care to remember! And I have had to deal with some unusual requests. My policy is always to let the officiating clergy have the last word, so if the clergy approved, I went along with it, sometimes reluctantly. If the tradition in Sweden is to be more liberal in the choice of music, then so be it. I have often played ''Hymn to Joy'' for the recessional so I was interested to see the clip of it. when the soloist sang the words ''melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the dark of doubt away'' I thought of the controversy around the couple, and hope all that is now past. May they have a long and happy life together. :flowers:

Queen Margrethe seemed to be in pain, and I wish someone had escorted her into the church instead of her having to walk in alone. Both of her sons were there, after all. But it was sweet of Frederik to escort her down the steps. No doubt we'll see more of that as time goes on.

I also had that cross my mind when I heard that part and Amen to all you said I bolded up there. As for Queen Margarethe going into the Chapel by herself, it was dependant on Rank and Protocol from what I could see. A pity, as it was sadly obvious Her Majesty was having a tough time walking on Saturday and could have truly used that extra support. :(

And, the ROSES! As a lifelong gardener, I wanted to smell those

I too loved those Roses. Not only did they look beyond gorgeous, but that Creamy Yellow through to Coral just looked amazing paired w/the Grey Marble of the Chapel. Easily my favourite colour scheme out of the three Swedish Royal Weddings of the last five years.

And I think I've covered everything...I think that is. One last thing....I really hope this not the last time we see the Connaught Tiara on Victoria, as it really suits her and it looked stunning on her as well. :)

I really enjoyed this Wedding and the emotion and love truly was oozing out from my iPad.

Congratulations to Prince Carl Phillip and Princess Sofia!! Wishing a long and happy life to them!!

I thought it might interest some of you to see how the wedding is covered outside Sweden.

The BB coverage this week is, to put it mildly, massive!

But see for yourselves: https://app.box.com/s/wan1c8nm7bvef031n6j8vne2tpzmg5xj
As always the files are large, so you may allow up to a couple of seconds to load.
(You do of course realize that it's easier and faster to download the entire folder, rather file after file ;)).

DRF trivia based on the articles:

QMII: Wore a dress by Birgitte Thaulow.
QMII's legs and back seems to have troubled her. She was seen sitting down on the terrace while waiting for the newly weds to return, rather than standing like most of the guests.
She was also seen leaning hard on the bannister.

Mary: Wore a dress by Birgit Hallstein and wrist-band-pearl-thingies from Marianne Dulong. Her hair was done by Søren Hedegaard.

Frederik: Wore the mess uniform of the navy.
Daniel and Frederik seems to have a close relationship. because Daniel was seen caressing Frederik's cheek. - Perhaps in sympathy with Frederik's legs. He went for a bicycle in Sweden a few hours before the wedding. some 250 km, to be exact.

Joachim: Wore the mess uniform of the army.

Our Marie: Wore a dress by Alberta Ferretti and shoes by Jimmy Choo. Her hair was done by Dennis Knudsen.

Thank you, LadyFinn!
I especially like the tiara of Marianne von der Esch. It seems to have a lovely wreath desing. Does some know what her connection with the court is? Does she have a function at court, or is she a friend? And what kind of medal is she wearing?

Marianne von der Esch is the widow of Hans Ulrik von der Esch. Marianne and Hans Ulrik have always been close friends of the royal family, queen Silvia, Victoria, Carl Philip and princess Christina attended at Hans Ulrik's funeral in 2009. Their son Fredrik von der Esch is queen Silvia's godson.

Here is another photo of Marianne and her tiara at the wedding.

The medal could be this, awarded to those who have been in the Swedish state's service for 30 years and have shown "zeal and probity".

Both Marianne née Celsing and her late husband Hans Ulrik von der Esch have been close to the royal couple for a long time. For example is the Queen godmother to their son. Hans Ulrik is the son of a ambassador and his brother Björn was Lord Chamberlain between 1975-1980.
The medal looks like one of the commemoration medals handed out to guests and high-ranking members of staff at royal anniversaries.

Please someone tell me what the obsession with the big bird dress is? Please someone?

Not sure it's obsession, so much as "Oh NO!! Not AGAIN!?!" I've lost count now how many times Queen Sonja's worn that thing at Weddings, State Dinners, Major Important Events for Fellow Royals outside of Norway....etc over the years.
