Prince William, Kate Middleton and Laura Parker-Bowles were amongst the illustrious guests at the Society Wedding of the Year, at Burford Parish Church, today, when Hugh Van Cutsem Junior and Rose Astor were united in Holy Matrimony

The bride's tiara is beautiful and impressive.

Prince William's girlfriend, Kate Middleton. She's pretty and very elegant IMO, a girl with good taste...

Wedding Role for William

By James Reinl, PA

Prince William was an usher today at the wedding of his friend, Hugh van Cutsem, and the daughter of a local landowner.

But neither the Prince of Wales nor Camilla watched the 30-year-old groom and Rose Astor, 25, exchange vows despite a long history with the van Cutsem family.

Among the society crowd were William’s girlfriend Kate Middleton and an old flame Jessica ‘Jecca’ Craig, wearing a poncho and cowboy hat.

Advertising guru Maurice Saatchi, millionaire editor of The Ecologist magazine Zac Goldsmith and former royal nanny Tiggy Pettifer were among 400 guests.

Rose, the youngest daughter of David and Clare Astor, wore an ivory dress with matching veil and tiara to the one-hour ceremony at Burford Parish Church, near Oxford.

The groom, dressed in a traditional morning suit, escorted his bride through the drizzle under the protection of a white umbrella.

Charles and Camilla were not expected to attend the wedding after the groom’s parents, Hugh and Emilie van Cutsem avoided their own own marriage blessing at Windsor Castle in April.

Charles had already boycotted the wedding of their eldest son, Edward, to the Duke of Westminster’s daughter, Lady Tamara Grosvenor, in November last year after learning Camilla would be sitting rows behind him.

The two families have known each other for years with Emilie becoming very close to the young princes after the death of Diana.

Mr van Cutsem, a farmer, conservationist and pro-hunt campaigner from Hilborough, Norfolk, became Charles’s closest confidante when they were students at Cambridge more than 30 years ago.

I love the fact these Van Cutsem boys are marrying women worth millions and in the case of Lady Tamara Grosvenor, billions.

They came, they saw inheritances, they conquered. The first time we have a male family to compare to the Cushing sisters, the Mitfords, and the Miller sisters.

The one who married in November to Lady Tamara received 10 m pounds to ensure the Duke of Westminster's daughter was kept in the lifestyle she was used too.

The British Astors descend from the American William Waldorf Astor who came to England, bought a castle and newspapers, was elevated to peerage with the title Viscount Astor of Hever for the castle he bought.

The reason he came to England is to get away from a family feud in which he insisted that since he was the oldest male heir to the Astor fortune his wife should be deemed THE Mrs. Astor in New York society. His aunt said no...not going to happen. To get back at his aunt, Caroline Schermerhorn Astor, he tore down his brownstone, built the Astoria hotel and left for England......never to return.

That is why you have an English Branch of the Astor family......even though they are originally from Germany.

Wow. KAte is so beautiful. I hope William marries her. She has natural style, beauty, and grace. ALot like Diana. ALthogh I am not saying that she is the new diana

Nancy, Viscountess Astor (1879-1964), daughter-in-law of William was the first woman to take a seat (and second to be elected to) in the House of Commons. Originally from Virginia, her first husband was the nephew of Robert Gould Shaw (famous Civil War general of the all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, played by Matthew Broderick in the movie Glory). She was one of the five famous Langhorne sisters who all led/married into semi-interesting lives. Actress Joyce Grenfell and interiot designer Nancy Lancaster were her nieces.

Rose is one of four children of a younger son of a younger son of Viscount Astor. While her family is comfortable. I seriously doubt Hugh's going to get much money out of the marriage.

I had the displeasure of meeting in person a couple of the Van Cutsem boys while on holiday in London visting relatives. They relish in their royal connections and flaunt it.

I was always taught never to air my connections, or for that matter family issues in public as they did. Thankfully I was only in their presence for about two hours.

Their mother was the one who divulged Tom Parker Bowles drug issues to the press. That is why Camilla never like them.

Can't say I blame as the term gold digger comes to mind.

If they flaunt their connections, and everything I've seen says they don't, it wouldn't make them any different than the rest of William and Harry's friends. Indeed, they're one of the quieter families, compared to the Palmer-Tomkinsons, Mountbattens, and Shands.

Their mother divulged Tom's drug problem to Charles, not the press. Besides, they aren't to blame for what their mother does. Camilla may have a problem with Emilie, but there's never been any indication that she has a real problem with Emilie's sons (she hinted they were the ones on drugs to protect Tom and get back at Emilie, not necessarily because she doesn't like the sons).

I don't think Hugh's marriage could be called gold-digging, because she's not likely to inherit much money. Edward married money, but they don't use the money anyhow. He refused to accept the gift of a house and pays full rate for a house they are renting.

How one appears to the press and media is one thing. How one really is in private is quite another. My family in England knows the Van Cutsems and many of the aristocratic families.

I would not post a lie and half-truth. I am only posting what I hear directly from those who know them personally, including myself.

The press relies on private sources, and given Emilie's reputation, one could safely assume the sources aren't necessarily keen on her, yet they still say generally nice things about the sons and the husband. Even if they are vile, horrid people, William and Harry still seem to like them. Either William has terrible taste in friends, and he very well might, or he doesn't see them as bad people. Either way, whatever they do rarely makes the press, so they must be smart enough to keep it quiet. Everyone has a bad side, and I'm sure being raised by a mother who seems to revel in royal connections has rubbed off on them, but I can't honestly think that anyone else raised in that situation would be much different.

Even if they flaunt like mad, it still wouldn't make Hugh (or Edward, if tales of his independence are to be believed) gold-diggers.

Garish display on their part. I also know that the, Tita, her nickname, the Duchess of Westminster, while publicly putting on a happy face, was not overly pleased with Tamara's choice of a husband.

I've always thought Edward was the flashiest of the brothers, but maybe Tamara's stubborn. If she is, the only thing her parents could publicly do is support her decision, and be there for her should it go wrong.

You seem like a really intelligent lady. It is nice to be able to converse with others who have well thought out opinions. I responded back to you on the Greek forum under the name thread.

You seem really knowledgeable to me, too. I'm looking forward to picking your brain on royal issues as they come up, because you probably do more reading than I can (currently studying law, so most of my reading time is confined to human rights abuses (which makes Constantine's case even more fascinating to me)).

Yes! Now that is interesting....I know back in 2002 he won his case..although not in the way he had hoped in the World Court, I believe. He, his sister Irene and aunt Katherine received money in the suit but not the property Mon Repos or Tatoi.

I will tell you that I think if ANY royal family outright owned property in their own name, and jewels for that matter, and the government during WWII stripped them of it, they should get it back.

How would we feel if our government did that to us?

We should start another thread for this as I know King Michael and King Simeon are experiencing similar issues..so are some of the Hapsburgs...

not only them, but some other noble/aristocratic families as well. all i know is that i'd feel horrid if my family lost everything - i know some ancestors of mine were forced into exile from their country of origin, and they never got over it.

Kate looks very pretty in this dress.
is there any picture of Jessica? i wonder if really she was gf of PW? if so, will it be awkward for K&J to meet?

Some extra info on the bride's tiara

"Two sprays of mixed flowers, entirely pavéd with diamonds, meet at the large, open wild rose in the center. The sprays can also be worn as brooches. The diamonds, set in flowers, are recorded in the Heathcote inventory of 1786 and have descended in the same family since..."

The tiara is named as being the property of Baroness Nancy Willoughby de Eresby, 28th Baroness Willoughby de Eresby, who apparently was one of the train bearers for Queen Elizabeth at her coronation in 1953.

The mother of the present owner of the tiara (the Baroness) and the grandfather of the bride were siblings, both children of Waldorf Astor, 2nd Viscount Astor.

Are there any more pictures of the bride? I'd like to see her whole dress...

The tiara is pretty, but I found it too big for her.

I loved Kate's outfit. But not Jecca's hat..
