Darn! I keep forgetting to attach photos with my messages! I wish there was an 'Erase' function on this board so that I could forget all the times I've done this!

Another try.

Hi-

Can anyone tell me how Fabiola and Baudoin met? I haven't been able to find anything. Also, do you know any background on her or her family? Did she go to university?

Also, have any of the current famil members been to the Congo? I've seen Mathilde and Astrid in Africa, but I didn't know if they still visit the Congo.

I believe there is a new book on the Royal belgian jewels. Does anyone know the title or the authors name? I think it is in French.

I think that after independence of Congo in '60 that only king baudoin and fabiola have visited Mubutu, but after they get to know his regime they refused any contact with the president, he wasn't even invited to the funeral of baudoin. Afterwards no member of the royal family has visited the land for as far as I know.
But when Kabila junior visited Belguim a while ago, he had invited king albert to come over, but Albert said he was very pleased but thought it was to early to come. And right he was if we see the new rebellie in Bukavu and area.

It's said that Baudoin and fabiola met with the help of a religious woman, who brought them together, as you know the king and queen were very religious. But I can't tell you more about the person who committed them.

The Irish non Veronica O'Brien had introduce a new marriage-candidate to the Belgian king Baudouin in 1960. She recommend the Spanish countess Fabiola de Mora y Aragon, 32 years old, and just like the king ultra catholic. So O'Brien was that religious woman wo bring them together.
Because they where strong religious, bishop Suenens organized a first date between Baudouin and Fabiola in Lourdes.
They anounced their marriage on September 16th, 1960.
On 15 december 1960 they married in Brussels, and Fabiola became the first belgian queen since the death of Queen Astrid in 1935.

Fabiola had a medical study in Madrid, Paris and Lausanne (Schwitzerland), and she became nurse in a hospital in Madrid. She also write a lot of fairytails (like "De Indische Waterlelies, a tale wich is now a show in the Dutch thempark Efteling), before she became queen.

Fabiola was daughter of the Marquiss of Casa Riera and Count of Mora. There is other version about their first meeting, according with this story Queen Ena of Spain wanted her granddaughter Infanta Pilar marry King Balduin and she prepared a meeting in her Swiss residence. Queen Ena advised Infanta Pilar to choose a lady-in-waiting not very showy and attractive and she chose Fabiola de Mora and that way it was how it all began.

Well, maybe Queen Ena had a big role in this story, but there where some more candidates, like Princess Irene of Greece.
Baudouin had his own ideal woman: she must be strong catholic and he prefer a lady from Spanish nobelty, so they start to search in the 50's for an Spanish princess. Queen Ena reccomende princess Pilar indeed, and there whe several other Spanish candidates. Then in 1960 the Irish non Vernica O'Brien introduced Fabiola of Mora and Aragon to the Belgian court, and the next part of this story is allknown. Their was finally an appiontment in Lourdes, and several months later they married.

Here are some pictures of queen Fabiola handing out the Interbrew-Baillet Latour prize in 1999
