Unforgettable Event!
I was there at 8.00 and had a first place at the Protocole rows ; I entered with an Old Nun who knew the Queen.
At 9.00 the Belgian Nobilities , the Ambassadors , the President of the Courts and Lawyers in their toge, also Members of the Order of St Sepulchre with their white and red Toge. (?)
The Presidents of the Parliament and the Senate and our Ministers. I did not see the Lord Mayor of Antwerp.
And then started the Royal Houses , Archduchess Carl Ludwig of Habsbourg and her Children , Archduchess Rodolphe of Habsbourg with her Children. The Empress Farah , Don Duarte of Portugal, Princess Lea and Princess Marie Esmeralda, Princess Isabella of Liechtenstein, Saudi and Princes from Maroc and others.
Then the Reigning Houses , the Prince of Liechtenstein, the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg , Sisters , Brothers and Children the whole Grand Ducal House was there;
The King and the Queen from Sweden , Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands , Queen Margarethe II, King Harald and his Sister Princess Astrid. They were followed by Members of their Houses wearing orders.
The old Grand Duke Jean and the former King and Queen of Spain entered a special door.

And then my first Shock, I saw an old frail Lady needing help for the steps . She entered the Cathedral in a black long dress with a little train and her hands were hidden. Is was the Empress of Japan and Everybody was bowing....

And then Cardinal Danneels and Monseigneur Leonard came at the main door and welcomed the late Queen Fabiola I heard out side the Last post and la Brabançonne.(second chock)

And the Coffin in simple clear oak entered the Church followed King Phllippe , Queen Mathilde and their Children, Kind Albert II (devastated) and Queen Paola, Princess Astrid who kissed the old Nun who was sitting behind me, her husband and Chldren and at the end Prince Laurent (not in black with sunglasses) Princess Claire in black and their 3 Children.
The coffin lays on the ground as the one of Pope Jean Paul II.

The Funeral mass started , the lectures in french and in dutch.

The intentions first Princess Elisabeth in dutch and french, Prince Gabriel in french and Dutch, Prince Amadeo in french and Dutch, Heditary Grand Duke Guillaume in German, A member of Queen Fabiola's family in Spnish and at the end sweet princess Louise in English.

The Holy Communion and ho .. third shock our Cardinal Danneels felt down...this was not seen on the cameras.

The Songs during the Communion Ave Maria , Libera me Out, Amazing Grace and the last one my fourth shock the Spanish " la salve Rociera" unforgettable !

The Dutch Will Tura : Hoop doet leven and José van Dam "la Quête " from l'homme de la Mancha / Jacques Brel.
The Brabançonne at the end and the Coffin of the late Queen went out of the Cathedral direction the Church of Laeken.

Queen Fabiola , I will never forget you and as Cardinal Danneels said in french in his people, son coeur battait avec celui de tous les belges "

Maria-Oliva,

I'm sure you will never forget this moment and I'm glad you had the chance to be a part of it.

the royal family look so sad and devastated and so do the most of the gusts no surprise as Queen Fabiola was a remarkable lady.
R.I.P Queen Fabiola.

British and Jordan didn't attend?

Maria Olivia thank you for sharing your experiences today at the Funeral for your beloved Queen Dowager.I did watch it all from the comfort of my bed and can certainly say that the Belgians gave Queen Fabiola a very beautiful and dignified funeral Mass.

I do not like pic #10!
I appreciate this is a public funeral but I do not like close-ups of grieving people at funerals, especially children.

It was very painful seeing little Prince Gabriel sobbing like that. Perhaps that is why some people don't bring children to funerals because it's too upsetting and intense for them.

But Fabiola was adored by the Brabants, and their children probably thought of the old queen as their grandmother.

Te empress looked so frail at Queen Fabiolas funeral today. She could've not gone and Japan could've sent another representative.

But I'm so impressed by the empress choosing to go and honour Queen Fabiola.

I've always loved the Japanese royals (I was born in Japan, so my loyalties towards them) but today after watching the empress struggle to climb the stairs, I am mighty impressed!!

And the dignified and honorable bow toward inside the church shows the level
of elegance and class of this lady.

Cardinal Danneels did not fall down, he made a misstep when going from the Altar to the royal family but was -in time- helped by the clergy escorting him.

The Spanish song is the "Salve rociera" a song in honor of the Virgen del Rocio

The woman who read and sang was a niece of Queen Fabiola, Blanca Escrivá de Romaní, Marchioness of Ahumada

lula-

I have never even heard of that song and I understand very little Spanish, but I cried while listening to it. Spirited and joyful yet reverent, exactly like Fabiola herself. And it seems perfection to send her off on her final journey with the music of her native Spain.

THANK YOU very much for the clip.

I watched the funeral and it was very moving, dignified and beautiful.
All was so touching that I almost had a tears in my eyes.
King Philippe and Queen Mathilde looked devastated.

This is ways too moving... I must admit I cried.
The love that remains is stronger than everything... "O death where is your victory o death where is your sting?" these words made so much sense...

No offence intended, but to me this was a kind of strange (royal) funeral. "It" didn´t seem to know what it was, official or private? Of course I understand that protocol has to be obeyed and private wishes to be woven into, but somehow it was nothing of both...

And "protocol" seemed to be a bit chaotic. Or I didn´t get it?! Why left Princess Beatrix after Empress Michiko while the other "active" crowned heads of state remained seated in the cathedral for quite a long time?!

And I was very surprised about the small number of people who bothered to turn up! I think half of the few hundred was media... Even after Pr. Bernhard of the NL´s death many many more people lined the streets, not speaking of a lot more royal attendance!
I´d never thought so after the amount of affection, love and gratefulness shown by the belgian people towards the late Queen after Baudouin´s death! Oh well, people seem to forget so fast...!

The grief of the BRF was heartbreaking and honest (I too felt especially for Prince Gabriel, poor darling!).

Didn´t Pr. Laurent and his family only attend the service at St. Gudule and not in Notre Dame de Laeken? I didn´t see them there...?!

Little princess Eleonore was crossing her hands over her chest, which means she wants to be blessed, but not receive the communion. Which means, she doesn't have made her first communion.

I recorded the funeral, I'll see how I can put it online, but since I'm very bad with technology, I can't promise anything... :ermm:

I watched the whole funeral on my iPhone. I'm not a catholic but i have to say that the catholic funeral masses are very nice. It was a very nice and moving ceremony. I loved all the music they had chosed. Especially the Bach, Mozart and Faure pieces. And that spanish song was very touching.

It was a great send off of their beloved Queen. You could see in the eyes of every member of the belgian royal family and others how much they loved her. Hopefully she is reunited with her beloved Baudouin now.

Rest in peace Ma'am

I agree with your comparisons. The latest royal funerals of Grand-Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, Prince Bernhard, Queen Juliana and Prince Claus were more royal and ceremonial but I must say I did not see lots of difference with Baudouin, apart from the use of a military hearse back then.

Queen Juliana has arrived at the New Church in Delft (2004): http://cache2.asset-cache.net/gc/31...2QBf2Jmf7oNxOHzBlxlNnaUmnO2W0h34YQfj8LHx1U4uK

Well, I haven´t been too pleased about Baud.´s funeral, too. Some wore white, lot of people (ladies) grey, some black.
But there had been at least a funeral procession from the Palace to the cathedral. But today there weren´t enough people, as I stressed before, for a funeral procession...

There´s really no comparison between Jos.-Charlotte´s, the Queen Mother´of Britain´s funeral (hers was almost like one of a Queen Regnant) and today. I know, of course, that the personalities of these ladies had been completely different and this fact reflects in their respective last-goodbys

I believe I have seen him this morning when the camera moved over the royal guests.

Now I am listening to Rocio Jurado, singing Salve Rociero con emocíon...
