Thanks for the photos, Kyansaunt20! I liked the second link. They seemed really relaxed and happy to mingle with the attendees.

Many thanks to kyansaunt20 for the links to these pictures. MT looks amazingly youthful with this hairstyle! Now if only we could see more pictures of the entire family together.

Lovely photo! The Grand Duke is very handsome in this photo. Is this agricultural group something that the Grand Duke is involved in, or was he just there for the anniversary?

I'm not actually sure - I've checked the website, but it just says that he's involved with numerous active associations in the realms of culture, sport, economics, government and science.

I don't know if you speak French, but if you do, the page is here.

Thanks, Alex001. I speak a tiny bit of French, and I am able to read some French as well. I didn't know that he was president of a seismology organisation (am I reading this correctly?). That is a very interesting thing to be involved in. Does anyone know how he came to be involved in seismology and geology?

Sgl, I think that's because, although it was established by several governments of member states of the European Council (which, if memory serves me correctly, is an organisation entirely independant of the EU), it is supported by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, whose role is to:
  • Cover the cost of the permanent staff
  • Organize the Journées Luxembourgeoises de Geodynamique
  • Colloquia and workshops related to geodynamics and seismology
  • Support will also be provided to cover the cost of publishing the "Cahiers de l'ECGS" and
  • the cost of the maintenance and equipment of the Walferdange Geodynamic Laboratory."

Two audiences with the Grand Duke were held today:
Cour grand-ducale de Luxembourg - Audience LAR
This one was with the pilots and the board of directors (is that how you'd translate Conseil d'Administration?) of Luxembourg Air Rescue.

Cour grand-ducale de Luxembourg - Audience EUROSKILLS
This one was with champions of EUROSKILL, which is part of the EU Lifelong Learning Programme and "...forms an important stage on which Europe can profile itself to the world on the basis of a number of different skills. Innovation within European vocational skills and international cooperation are a major factor. To participate in EuroSkills is to participate in a total experience. Just as for Skills Masters, the EuroSkills event is structured according to the concept of seeing, doing and informing. The exciting vocational competitions are a source of inspiration and offer a clear overview of the state of affairs within the various skills areas. European trades that are qualified for the competitions and presentations at EuroSkills 2008 vary from natural resources to technology and from transport to commerce, service & administration."

Thanks, Alex001. Do you know how it came to be that the Grand Duchy supports this? Is this something that they will do indefinitely, or is it a term, after which another member nation will cover costs?

I think that it is something that they will do until/if the organisation shuts down - there was a convention signed between the Grand Duchy and the organisation in 1994 to cover their costs (which I don't think is much of a problem with Luxembourg being the richest country in Europe), but, in return, the ECGS must:
  • Promote programs in Geodynamics Research, related to the study of Tectonics Distortions in connection with Earthquakes, with a particular emphasize on Space Techniques.
  • Improve the relationship between specialists from different scientific disciplines by supporting regular meetings as part of the Journées Luxembourgeoises de Géodynamique, and also by encouraging colloquia and workshops.
  • Equip the Underground Geodynamics Laboratory in Walferdange with the necessary scientific and technical equipment for the study of deformation in a tectonically active zone, in order to test its performance in an aseismic site.
  • Undertake these specific actions in a scientific interest.
So Luxembourg does get a return for its money - and the offices are in the town of Walferdange in Luxembourg, so it would probably be inconvenient to rotate between nations.

Also, I think the organisation is linked with Luxembourg's Musée National d'Histoire Naturelle (National Museum of Natural History), which is its administrative and social address, so I think it's fair to assume that it'll remain with Luxembourg.

Thank you, Alex001! It does make sense to tie this with not only the richest country in Europe, but also with the National Museum of Natural History. I would imagine that this museum has many interesting exhibits due to this connection.

Thanks for the info, Alex001! I don't know French so I've relied on your posts.

This is probably a redundant statement, but I think GD Henri (and other royal monarchs) has one of the most interesting jobs on the planet. Imagine waking up every day to meet new people doing different things. Earthquakes, Air Rescue, agriculture. Whew! And having to talk intelligently with all these different people about all these different things. Speaking as one who is useless at small talk and social chit chat I don't know how the GD gets by with his job. It's not an easy one.
