Not all people show a natural "smiling face" even when they are happy, maybe Chris neutral face expression makes him look sour, I prefer a natural/neutral face expression than a obviously fake smile from a person, such as Sofia, Carl Philip's girlfriend shows as soon as she sees a camera.

I apologize if this is already posted. I recall a photo of P. Daniel making the same gesture to Haakon &M-M at a sporting event and it didn't get much comment

I think that Chris still need time to get comfortable with the position he will have after the marriage. Let's give him the time!

I know he had several public appearances before the engagement, but now he is more in the public focus and has to learn to handle it.

The whole "why is he not smiling?" and "why is he doing it so?" discussion should be made later, after the marriage.

Here are my thoughts. Chris is not a "young" man and should not be making gestures of that sort in public under any circumstance. Also, he knew who he was getting involved with, she is not some random woman, she is the daughter of the King of Sweden, there will be media coverage. And on that same note, Chris IMO has it much easier with regards to media coverage since they live in NY.

That's probably because Victoria, Daniel, Haakon and Mette-Marit are all very good friends and it seemed to be an inner circle's joke.

That is the whole point . . . I think he thought he knew and was prepared but the reality is far, far worse than he could ever have imagined and has been a very unpleasant surprise for him. I don't think he could imagine the barrage of flashes or that nasty little journo's would be trawling his life for "dirt" real or imagined.

As an aside, he wasn't smiling in the photo taken of him and his former girlfriend. Perhaps he is just not at ease in the glare of the camera so let's give him a little time to catch his breath.

I remember that gesture of Daniel, at a sporting event. Basically I disapprove it as well. The context of the finger stories is however different. I think Daniel was too relaxed, and felt he could behave like any sport fan.
On the other hand, during all the years he was quite under pressure from the paps, he managed to avoid any undesirable reaction. If I remember well he was crossing the street to avoid them, and that was also criticised!, and above all, he had to face their curiosity on his own. Chris is most of the time accompanied by Madde, when facing the paps "It is always easier when you are two" they say. I feel less patience from Chris when confronted to situations he doesn't appreciate.
Could that story have influenced his decision not to attend the Nobels?
Honestly I was surprised to read that he was invited; I am still wondering whether it is all true, even if the newspaper mentions Tenert.
I looked at pictures from the Nobel of December 2009, only one which Daniel or Jonas could have attended, but they were not there. For Daniel, he was still in the post-transplantation period and it was the time of the flue, so not recommended for him.

Why should Chris not have been invited to the Nobel Prize ceremony being a royal fiancé, the same way as Jonas Bergström attended the Nobel ceremonies in 2009 when engaged to Madeleine, you can find photographic evidence of that here: http://www.posh24.se/photo/257365/ku...pa_nobelfesten escorting Bettina Bernadotte down the stairs to the dinner. He was not seated on the podium with the royal family, but in the front row beside princess Christina: http://danielnyhlenskungligablogg.sv...med-han-ocksa/ Daniel didn't attend the festivities due to his kidney transplant in 2009.

Well said
I am not particularly intersted in Chris.I don't find him handsome (nor Jonas and Daniel) but that's not an excuse for criticising him for every possible reasons.
Give the guy a rest.
A few years ago,Daniel was imo weird, but now,he seems to be a good prince consort, husband and father and that's enough.
I can't understand how some find Daniel same gesture funny and disgusting when done by Chris
They advocate that the context was different.Well this seems to be the same thing with the pics of Chris and his ex girlfriend ,context was different

I got to thinking about this last night. Why are people so up tight about Chris not smiling. Getting a smile out of the king seems to be a major accomplishment. Maybe Chris is following his example?!?!?!?

ok, Meraude, I looked only at the podium! Maybe that is why Chris is declining, he wants the podium, hm!

If I were in Chris' situation I would not attend either. I would wait until I was married and a "full" member of the royal family. This half-way in between position is not for me and Chris might have felt the same. I look forward to seeing him next year joining his wife Princess Madeleine with the royal family.

Court experts about Chris not attending the Nobel ceremonies:
- Chris makes absolutely wrong. If he has no vital reasons, it is clearly inappropriate. Otherwise, Chris probably did not realize what he was getting into when he got engaged to Madeleine. He can't continue this way, says Herman Lindqvist.
Lindqvist is doubtful whether Chris understood that he is now an official person - representing the Swedish royal family:
- There's a photo where Chris gives photographers the finger. You should not to do so. One can understand that Victoria has wanted to give the finger to the paparazziz many times, but she smiles instead and hurries on. This could be signaling that there may be real problems in the future with Chris, says Lindqvist
Johanna Lejon from Svensk Damtidning thinks that Chris is doing wrong:
- This would have been a chance for Chris to show everybody who Madeleine has fallen for. One can speculate that Chris might have gotten cold feet before the Nobel because he is not used to being so guarded.
Roger Lundgren, chief editor of Kungliga magasinet, also says that it is an ill-considered decision:
- It is a real shame. This had been a great way for Chris to introduce himself in the royal world and the banquet is also very important to the royal family from the PR standpoint.

The press writes also that the king didn't like Chris's decision not to attend the Nobels.

Since it sounds like he intends to remain an American citizen and not to become a Swedish one, he cannot use her title.

I thought it was a bit tasteless of him not to attend the ceremony. He's Madeleine's official and recognized partner now, and this was a very big occasion for him to let her go unescorted- especially since they only recently announced their engagement.

I thought the "affianced" weren't allowed to attend events like the Nobel prize until marriage. Did Daniel attend the Nobel ceremony before the marriage?

No he did not. Even though they were engaged, Daniel did not attend the 2009 Nobel Prizes.

That was to avoid exposure to a large crowd following his kidney transplant earlier that year. Jonas, engaged at the time to Madeleine, attended the 2009 Nobel.
