Queen Silvia has cancelled her trip to the Olympic Games. According to information officer Johan Tegel the queen has other commitments. King Carl Gustaf flew today to South Korea as planned. Tegel said that he had no information about what kind of commitments the queen has.
Silvia ställer in resan till Sydkorea _ Svensk Damtidning

Margareta Thorgren, the director of the press department, said to Expressen:
- The king and the queen have many commitments. It was planned that the Queen would accompany the king, but now there are several other commitments in Sweden that she has to take care of. Therefore she has chosen not to travel to South Korea.
What are the commitments?
- There are many different, official and private. But the queen is sad to not be able to accompany. But due to other commitments, she has chosen not to leave.
When was the decision taken?
- Recently, it was now in the morning. And then, of course, we will tell you and provide correct information.
Princess Madeleine is expected to get her third child in Sweden in March - but the message about Silvia's canceled trip should not be interpreted as Madeleine being close to childbirth.
- It's not for such reasons, but it's about the queen's many work tasks that she needs to do here in Sweden.

King Carl Gustaf has arrived to Pyeongchang and gave the congratulation telegram to Frida Hansdotter, who won gold at women's slalom yesterday. Hansdotter is prince Daniel's second cousin.

King Carl Gustaf was interviewed ahead of the women's relay.
King Carl Gustaf is in place at the ski stadium to cheer for the Swedish team. And the king admits that he has difficulties keeping the nerves in control days like this.
- It will be really exciting, but I'm very nervous. I'm always in front of such competitions, but it's very fun to be here.
Sweden has gained great success during the Olympic Games and the king has followed the medal successes from home.
- It has been very fine. They have really done well. Not just those hoped for, there have been some bonus medals that you had not counted on.
Do the king think we have medal chances today?
- Yes, that's great chance. But as I always say: We are not alone in the track. It will be a tough one.
After each Olympic gold, the King and Queen Silvia has sent a greeting to the Swedish medalist, but the king has also talked with the gold heroes in place in South Korea.
- I usually say that they will have fun. It's easy to say, but it's tough. You have to be able to relax. I'm always impressed with the efforts, because I know what lies behind. Hard job. And you only get the best if you put a lot of time to this, says the king.

Princess Nora of Liechtenstein presented the medals during the medal ceremony for the Ladies' Alpine Skiing Super-G today, February 17:

:previous: Apparently she can't hide her happiness as Liechtenstein got their first medal since 1988. :flowers:

It's a pity that the Spanish royals didn't plan to present in Pyeongchang as Spain already got two bronzes in this Olympics (in Snowboarding and Figure Skating) and the last time they won a medal in winter game was back in 1992.

- I have great hopes. That's why I'm here. Some medal we should be able to cope with, said king Carl Gustaf to Sportbladet before Saturday's women's cross country relay.
And his hopes are released instantly. Sweden took silver after Charlotte Kalla picked up 26 seconds in the relay and Stina Nilsson finally got up in the spur of Marit Björgen.
After the race, the king went down to the goal area to congratulate the Swedish team.
After a short hug, Charlotte Kalla exclaimed "How fun to see you here!", which made her teammates and the king to laugh.

That's most likelly exactly the reason that she was asked to present the medals.

They aren't IOC members like Nora... and no traditional winter sports country, so it makes sense that they didn't show up.

Thanks! That was indeed what I was looking for. Was the Telegram from Daniel?

Maybe LadyFinn can clarify, but my interpretation was that when a Swede wins gold (or a medal maybe) at the olympics, he/she receives a congratulatory telegram from the King. In this case the King brought the telegram personally ;)

That makes sense but I just hope they can be here to witness the great breakthrough in winter sport of this country.

BTW both medalists are returning to Spain, maybe Felipe and Letizia will meet them in the coming few days.

King Carl Gustaf watched on Monday curling with Anette Norberg, a retired Swedish curler and olympic champion. Norberg and her team won the gold medal in women's curling in 2006 and 2010.
- It's nice to meet (Norberg) again because we were able to follow her amazing game. Swedish ladies have been doing great efforts for a long time and it is fun that new teams will be able to continue on that track. The guys have also done a great job, says the king when Sportbladet meets him in the VIP lounge.
He is relaxed, walks to the coffee maker and fills a paper mug that he places in another to not burn his fingers.
Team Hasselborg lost against South Korea by 6-7 but it was the first blue-hole loss of twelve matches.
Much speaks of the fact that there may be Swedish in both women's and men's finals.
- You can always hope and they have good conditions, the king says.
What experiences the king has about curling?
- Well, I've played once and it was awful long ago when the World Cup was settled in Karlstad in 1977. It was very bad. It was the first time I came into contact with it, but then it has not been so much. But I always learn during the trip, he says, looking Anette Norberg with gratitude..
Yes, the king has the company of the curling queen ...
- Hahaha. Yes, I get good coaching.
Does the king have a nice time in South Korea?
- Sweden has had very good success and little resistance to the final light. It goes up and down, but we've got what we've expected and maybe even more. Now we are hoping a little bit success of curling and other things.

Only the King of Sweden still present at the Olympics? What has happened to King Willem-Alexander, Prince Albert, Princess Anne and the others? I understand why the Danish Royals are absent and that they can't stay for all of it, but they all seem to have disappeared. To me it seems the Olympics have not been as well supported by the Royals as some previous games, or am I mistaken?

The three people you mentioned presented in Pyeongchang but have left already (normally they don't stay too long? In Sochi they only stayed a couple of days). I think the reason that we don't see so many royals is because of the long distance between Europe and South Korea, it's almost other side of the earth. Previous winter games were in either Europe or North America, which were not that far.
