Royals and the 2016 Rio Olympic & Paralympic Games.

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Young people that have spent years training to represent their country should have faith that ppl putting on the event are providing a safe games experience. Don't put your hand up to have them if you can't pull it off
Nothing to do with whining westerners

:previous: That's exactly why Frederik and Mary are so hugely popular. Tjey are the people's Crown Prince Couple. And their support for the Danes are so real. Look at the pictures! These visit here is not of duty, but an obvious joy. The genuine smiles and joy is not to be mistaken.

Danish svimmer Lotte Friis: "Another Royal visit today. This time not only got the pleasure of H.R.H crown princess Mary but also Denmarks future king H.R.H crown prince Frederik. Such amazing and friendly people!"

Neither Princess Anne nor King Willem-Alexander seem to be present at the Maracanã Stadium for the opening ceremony. I wonder why.

I don't think it is whining and complaining to expect basic sanitation facilities.

I am not aware of any athlete who doesn't have access to basic sanitation facilities. In fact, the olympic village facilities in Rio are far more luxurious than in previous editions of the games. A few plumbing problems in a minority of apartments should not be confused with lack of sanitation.

Goodness, the plumbing and electrical problems in a few apartments were solved within hours, yet people are accusing us of lacking basic sanitation. Really? I wonder if it's just ignorance or pure bad faith.

I'm yet to see a major international event such as the Olympic Games that went without a few problems.

Carlos Arthur Nuzman, President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, now speaking, is married to journalist Marcia Peltier, whose sister, Princess Dona Maritza of Orleans-Braganza, is married to Prince Dom Alberto of Orleans-Braganza, younger brother of Prince Dom Luiz, Head of the Imperial House of Brazil.

Really ? I didn't know that ! Thanks for sharing, Cris M.

You're welcome!

---------------------------------------------------

As far as I know, the only members of the Orleans-Braganza family who attended the opening ceremony (as private citizens, of course) was Princess Dona Maria Elisabeth and her husband, Dr. Pablo Trindade de Souza. She's a niece of the Head of the Imperial House of Brazil.

Prince Dom Rafael of Brazil, the fourth in the line of succession to the defunct throne, said in a recent interview that he plans to attend some of the competitions.

To our Brazilian posters, who is this athlete De lLima, who lit the cauldron? We don't know much about him? We expected the great Pele to play a role in lighting the Olympic flame...But a wonderful ceremony! Well done to all Brazilians involved...

Pelé was unable to lit the cauldron due to health problems. Nothing too serious, but he can't go up and down stairs.

But Brazil was very well represented by Guga (our tennis star), Hortência (our basketball star, known as "A Rainha" / "The Queen") and Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima. It was well-deserved.

From Wikipedia:

"Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima (born 11 August 1969 in Cruzeiro do Oeste, Paraná, Brazil) is a former long-distance runner who specialised in marathons. He received international renown after a spectator, laicized Irish priest Neil Horan, attacked him at the 2004 Summer Olympics marathon while he was leading the race at 35 km. Following the incident he fell back from first to third place, winning the bronze medal. He was later awarded the Pierre de Coubertin medal for sportsmanship for that race.

The other highlights of his career were wins at the Tokyo International Marathon and Hamburg Marathon, becoming the regional cross country champion in 1995, and winning the marathon at the Pan American Games twice consecutively in 1999 and 2003. He lit the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics."

^^^Thanks, CrisM, for the valuable info. Now we know, a great sportsman Mr De Lima, lit the flame. As per usual , this will be a great Olympic Games, to all those who are involved, despite all the criticism. To me, the amazing personal stories that emerge, such as those of the members of the refugee team , represent the true spirit of the Games. The rest is all just background info...

I missed Denmark's entry to the Marakana. Is it any pic of Frederick and Mary ?

I have the impression that less royals attended these Olympic. No Spain, no Dutch no Norway no British no Jordan. What about Prince Albert ?

Interestingly, when the Dutch team entered the stadium, the (Brazilian ?) TV (or whoever was generating the images) showed only PM Mark Rutte cheering, which led me originally to think that King Willem-Alexander was not in attendance. The pictures that have been posted to this forum confirm though that he was indeed at Maracanã.

I still don't know, however, why Princess Anne missed the opening ceremony considering she was scheduled to attend.

The are photos of her attending the ceremony.

The footage from the opening ceremony only seemed to show certain representatives from each country at certain times and only very briefly, given how fast each team entered the stadium it would have been hard to do more than a quick cut away to one person from each nation. I think we just got a bit spoilt that at the London 2012 games there seemed more of a focus on the royals rather than political representatives.

I stand corrected. Again, the TV didn't show her when Team GB was entering the stadium. They showed someone else cheering, whom I couldn't identify.

More of why F&M are so popular... Yesterday they took their bicycles around to visit both the Danish and Australian athlethes. That's something I think (and know all Danes thinks too) is so nice!

Great pics! Thanks Roskilde!:)

They are really getting into the spirit of the whole thing!

I imagine great also for the teams to see their enthusiasm and support!

Great pics also Eya! :)

Is Anne on her own or did Tim accompany her?

Isn't it ironic that a Scotsman who backed Scottish independence in 2014 was the flag bearer for Team GB ?

Well he is a member of the team!:)

Did he have a bit of a mishap with it?

Thank you Dee Anna!! I think Anne she is alone!

Thanks Eya! Tim is usually by her side, but I'm probably thinking more UKRF occasions.

Exactly, he is part of the team. I think it shows something good about the UK that most people have moved on from the Scottish Referendum result, if Andy Murray is proud to be part of team GB and proud to bear the Union Flag then thats enough for me. Everyone is entitled to an opinion on matters that concern their home nation and we need to respect that and move on now.
He had a mishap in that he inadvertently blocked Princess Anne's face with the flag during a photoshoot, not surprisingly Anne took it in her usual good humour.

I hope we get to see plenty of pictures of the Royals at various events.

I believe that the reason for this is that most royals present are members of the IOC and were sitting in the IOC box whereas prime ministers etc. were sitting in the box reserved for national representatives. This is why the King of the Netherlands,The Grand Duke of Luxembourg, the Prince of Monaco, the Crown Prince of Denmark and the Princess Royal (all members of the IOC) were not shown when their respective countries entered the stadium.

@eya thanks a lot for the great pics.
@minister of court: yes your explanation is logic. The responsible of images were looking for each country for the related officials. So they correctly showed John Kerry, president Hollande, the King and Queen of Belgium and also the Grand Duc of Luxembourg.
And they missed those sat in the IOC area, such as princess Anne, or Mary and Frédéric.
My question is about King Wilhelm Alexander and Prince Albert. They both are the rulers of their countries. They should be sat in the countries' rulers area and not to the IOC area, wasn't it like this? And if not, why ?

And to recapitulate:
Absent royals: /Spain, Norway, Sweden, Jordan,
England: princess Anne
Dutch: King Wilhelm Alexander (no Maxima)
Belgium: King and Queen
Luxembourg: only the Grand Duc
Denmark: Both couples, CP and Prince Joackim.

Monaco prince Albert without Charlene too

King Wilhem Alexander , Grand duc were present only for the IOC session and will leave Rio to morrow or next monday

The swedish royal couple will come to Rio,
Haakon will come without Mett Marit next week.

I will not critic that there are not a lot royals , myself is not interested by these olympic games.
It is summer in Europa, the dates of the olympic games are in middle of the holidays , there are no security and there are sanitory problems as the Virus Zika, some people are saying there are no mostikos because it is winter , in Rio, it is still warm and the moskitos are here . For me there is a danger and I hope that all the persons who are coming to Rio will be well after these olympic games.

It always seems the same in regards to the royals at the Parade, some seem to be in the area for foreign representatives and some in the IOC area making it harder for the cameras to get pictures of the right person in the right place in the small time each country has before the next arrives.

 Thanks T100! ..... Thought he had knocked some one on the head with it or something! Anne looked in total form!
