maxima has stated several times that she 'is dutch'. i think she was supporting netherlands, but i am sure she probably thought she would be happy whoever won. mary of denmark, in a similar situation to maxima, stated it nicely when she was asked if she was supporting the aussies: she said 'of course, so long as they are not competing against a dane'. i am sure both of them celebrate the wins of both of their countries, but if they had to choose... they are dutch and danish respectively.

Australia won silver in the race that Frederik handed out the medals, the pair gave an interview and were pleased that an honorary Australian presented the medals. They asked Frederik where Mary was and he said at home looking after the kids.

Jo Griggs is lovely, before her TV career she was a swimmer and won bronze at the Commonwealth Games.

Frederik has always made the impression on me that he doesn't need a wife to enjoy himself and that he will do what he wants anyway.
And Mary is the type of wife who will be ok with that.

Too bad Filip and Mathilde allready left. It was a good day for the Belgians yesterday with a bronze medal in women's omnium cycling and the men's hockey team qualified for the finals.

I am not, for sure because of the lack of government but also because unlike other royal families, the srf see it as 'work', I can't imagine them going as a family, having a good time while supporting athletes and being at ease at the Olympics eg as WA & Max with the girls or Joachim of Denmark with this family. It either 'work' or 'private = without cameras', there is nothing inbetween.

what can we expect from the Dailyfail:bang: they overlook facts to frame their story-line (Frederik wasn't losing his tie, he was getting ready for the medal ceremony as an IOC member; it was an official reception for the Danish athletes, but of course only include pictures of the female athletes; and lets forget the pictures of Frederik in Rio with Mary where he had the same smile and enjoying himself;))

As is disappointing that none of the younger British royals or the PoW (the heir to the throne) cared to show up to support this amazing Team GB which has already won 50 medals, including 19 Gold medals. It may have been just a case of Zika scare or, who knows, maybe they had some credible information about a potential threat if Prince Charles or Prince William were in attendance.
 
This is going to sound odd but I think having high profile people coming to the games such as royalty, heads of states, politicians and celebrities actually distract from the games. I'm sure all these people have and will have occasion to support and congratulate their country's athletes on their own turf. The games should be solely about the athletes.

Then again, I'm of the opinion that too much emphasis is put on how many medals a country has won and although it is good to have patriotism and be proud of where one is from, each and every athlete that makes it to the Olympic games to compete have earned that right by being the best that they can be.

The girl with the cap on is a student from the training ship DANMARK, that is currently docked in Rio. Frederik along with Mary, Joachim and Marie attended a gala on the training ship with the Danish students two weeks ago in Rio.

King Carl Gustaf visited the Olympic Village today and had lunch with Swedish Olympic Committee. After the lunch the king got tour at the village and visited the Sweden House (Sverigehuset). The king got a team book and a special pin from the Swedish Olympic Committee worn by everyone in the squad. In the Sweden House were athletes from canoeing and wrestling, but also mountain bikers and representatives of athletics were moving around on the terrace and livingroom when the king suddenly appeared.

Thank you for the links, everyone. I'm not patient enough to watch the television coverage to do my royal watching.

It was nice to hear Maxima speaking, I had never heard her voice before. As for her huge earrings, I've seen pictures of her in outfits that made my eyes hurt! But she's a very accomplished woman, and a good representative for her country, IMO.
