Prince William told the widow of a murdered Naval officer‎ to give her children 'big hugs' from him today after she thanked him for writing a private letter of condolence to them.

‎Gillian Molyneux, whose husband Lt Cdr Ian Molyneux, was shot dead when a Royal Navy junior rating went on the rampage on the nuclear submarine HMS Astute in 2011, revealed how William sent his note of sympathy to her just over a week before his wedding in April 2011 to Kate Middleton.

His letter said that, having lost his mother as a child, he knew something of how her children, particularly her eldest son Jamie, now 18, must be feeling.

It is quite clear that William has substantially stepped up the number of public engagements he carries out

I agree. And even when he doesn't do more engagements they have become more "heavy" or cermonial.

I agree with you. He has been doing more in terms of things that will be part of his duties as monarch. I think investiture are probably enjoyable to William since he's amazing with people.

The Duke of Cambridge's attendance at the Carol Service tonight (2/12) was a private engagement and is not recorded in the Court Circular.

The Duke of Cambridge has paid tribute to First World War servicemen whose bravery earned them the Victoria Cross, including a lance corporal who single-handedly stormed a machine gun post. William laid a wreath during a service outside Birmingham's Hall of Memory as he unveiled 10 of 627 memorial stones commissioned by the Government to honour all those awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) during the Great War-

I thought William and Harry were official Patrons of the charity? The carol service raises money for the charity, I wonder why doesn't it count?

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the events listed in the Court Circular ones that are approved by HM, The Queen and they're representing the Crown? If so, even if William and Harry were patrons, it wouldn't be an "official" engagement but rather one of their own personal endeavors.

^^^I believe that thees types of personal patronages ie: Sentebale are not considered official engagements.

I think it depends on in what capacity royals attend events. If William attended in a private capacity then it wouldn't be in the CC. If he attended formally then it would. This event has always seemed to be about friends and family attending a carol service.

It is a recognised patronage. He and Harry are Joint Patrons and it is on the list on the royal website.
