Prince William has played football and talked to Vietnamese school children - many of them coming from families that trade in traditional medicine - to try and to raise awareness about wildlife protection

Watch The Duke of Cambridge call for action to better protect endangered animals by shunning the use of rhino horn and other Illegal Wildlife Trade products at the IWT Conference 2016 in Hanoi, Vietnam.

This isn't a last minute thing at all but a planned engagement that wasn't announced in advance.
The anti-William/anti-royal brigade like to portray the royals with power and clout that they don't have and to think they can demand a meeting with the Head of State of a Sovereign nation on a whim.
Normally when royals travel overseas for private purposes they don't meet the Head of State - that happens on approved, planned and official visits.

This isn´t a private purpose, although saving wildlife is very close to PWilliam´s heart - the Duke has been asked by the british government ("HM´s government"!) to do this trip! In that regard meetings with vietnamese officials were essential.

The post that you refer to was for the trip to Kenya, not the trip to Vietnam.

The trip to Vietnam is not at the request of the UK Government, although they would have supported it. He has travelled as the President of United for Wildlife. The reason to speak to Gov ministers is to talk about legislation to prevent ivory trafficking.

It has been a busy couple of days - here is the CC for 16/17th November

16th November, 2016

The Duke of Cambridge this morning arrived at Noi Bai International Airport, Hanoi, and was received by Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (His Excellency Mr Giles Lever).

His Royal Highness this afternoon called upon Mr Nguyen Xuan Phuc (Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam) at No 1 Hung Vuong Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi.

The Duke of Cambridge afterwards called up Mrs Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh (Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam) at No 1 Hung Vuong Street.

His Royal Highness, President, United for Wildlife, later visited Hong Ha Primary School, Lan Ong Street, Hanoi, and subsequently met Vietnamese conservationists at Aha Café, Thuoc Bac Street.

The Duke of Cambridge afterwards visited Ngoc Son Temple, Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi.

His Royal Highness this evening held a Reception at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel, Hanoi, for young Vietnamese leaders from the worlds of art, music, media and business.

17th November, 2016
The Duke of Cambridge today carried out the following engagements in Hanoi, Vietnam.

His Royal Highness, President, United for Wildlife, this morning attended an Illegal Wildlife Trade Conference at the Lotte Hotel.

The Duke of Cambridge, President, United for Wildlife, afterwards attended a Meeting with delegates from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, at the Lotte Hotel.

His Royal Highness this afternoon received Mr Vu Quang Hoi (Chairman, T&T Group) at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel.

The Duke of Cambridge, President, United for Wildlife, subsequently received Mr Yue Lei (Senior Vice-President, Sanpower Group).

His Royal Highness, President, United for Wildlife, later visited Vietnam Television Studios

The U.K. Government was involved in the conference in Hanoi. If you watch William's speech on YouTube, there is a sponsor logo for the U.K. government along with other logos on the screen behind him.

William calling on the President when he was Kenya isn't that unusual. Harry called on the President of Malawi when he was there working with the elephants this summer. Both are Commonwealth countries so it's a little bit different from them popping over to ski in France or Switzerland.

But he was not there representing the Government. The only reason he is there is the conference. No conference no visit.

Agree with yr last point and at is what Iluvbertie and I were saying in the posts made in March.

It was a wonderful and insightful interview by The Duke of Cambridge. I'm very proud of William and all his accomplishments. He's working hard on behalf of conservation. Loved him talking about his family too.

I'm glad William is being honest about how life changing it is to have a family of his own. Having a family can be challenging, no matter the circumstances. I know some will see his words as weak, because he has lots of wealth and resources at his disposal. No matter who you are or what you have, family life have always been life changing.

He has built such a beautiful family for himself. I know his whole family must be very proud and supportive of him. He's got a good woman on his arms too. It's what every man needs and want.

Money and resources are not the answer to dealing with a difficult transition from being single to being married and having children. William was able to pull through, because he was willing to work through the difficulties. He knew what mattered to him and made sure that he got to keep what was most important. I'm sure if he threw in the towel, no money would have saved him from a divorce. I'm glad he admitted that having children can be an adjustment. Even when one is good with children, it doesn't mean that being a parent won't be a challenge. Catherine, along with their respective families are great sources of support as well. This couple strikes me as being a team, hitch is extremely important when raising children and having a successful marriage.

I wouldn't call this weak but rather ignorant, compared to what some of his subjects have to face. Yes, it's a life change, but all the money, staff etc etc should make it at least that bearable to keep him from whining about it in public.

I guess William's life is not easy all the time but we all have our cross to wear and struggling with parenthood is not something that will console those who struggle with parenthood while having financial worries, facing unemployment, dealing with relationship problems etc etc.

Yes, I'm sure he knows that there are many parents who have lots of other hardships when it comes to raising a family. He knows how fortunate he is to have nannies and money.

He's just expressing the life adjustment that comes along with marriage and kids. It's a major challenge no matter what resources one has.

People have to stop looking at royalty and think they have everything so there's no room for real life challenges and obstacles.

Being a husband and father is hard no matter what, but it's all very rewarding too.

I'm sure it's a challenge for both him and Catherine. It's why we all have to continue to wish them well, and may the love and support they have for each other carry them through.
