I was wondering...if the Queen wished to do so, could she grant Michael Middleton a title?

Or only a knighthood?

How does that work?

(I know Lady Jane, Princess Diana's sister, married a man who was granted a title).

It's highly unlikely as Mr. Middleton has done nothing to merit it, whereas as Lady Jane married Sir Robert Fellows, who served as the Queen's private secretary for many years. He earned his life peerage through service to the monarch.

Robert Fellowes received his knighthood, and later Life Peerage for services to the Crown. He was Private Secretary to the Queen.

As mentioned in an earlier post, in order to receive a knighthood or Peerage, the individual must have done something for the country - whether that is charity work, diplomatic or business.

Michael Middleton would not receive a title just for being the father of the Duchess of Cambridge.

But Anthony Armstrong-Jones received an earldom just for being the husband of Princess Margaret.

So, there must be exceptions.

There's a difference between married to a royal, and the father of someone married to a royal. It is customary for a commoner to recieve a title upon marriage. There is no custom to make the father of a bride a Knight.

He married into the family himself, and he married a royal princess who was at the time, a senior member of the royal family. Totally different situation.

Once again: it's highly unlikely that Michael Middleton will receive a peerage as there's absolutely no reason to grant him one.

Thats because he personally married into the family. A title was offered and accepted - I think because at the time it was seen as "impossible" for the daughter of a king to marry a commoner - part of the culture of the time. Roll on 20+ years and the same thing is offered to Mark Philips and he turned it down. Times change.

The public in the Uk believe in reward for effort - do something good and get rewarded. Michel Middleton has not done anything tht would merit an award.

Come on, he is a sucessful businessman and we all know how many knighthoods are granted for "services to the economy". There could first be an MBE and later the KCBE and noone would mind as these orders are not in the gift of her majesty but in that of her government - she only agrees to the proposal.

And of course king Charles could anytime grant his daughter-in-law's father a knighthood after his son and Mr. Middleton's daughter secured the succession - for I guess we'll see a similar scenario as in Denmark, where both grantpartent couples look after the Royal children - with Mary's parents more often, so they do the queen and Prince Henrik a favour, just like the Middletons could do it for Charles and Camilla. The Middletons will retire eventually and who knows what kind of Royal service or service to the society they will do?

My father's a successful business man, but I doubt he's going to get an MBE. The only way Michael Middleton will ever get one is because of his daughter, and that's not how it works.

I really don't ever see Michael Middleton being honored by the royal family with any kind of honors nor do I think Michael Middleton would every expect to be.

What I do see is a friendly relationship between the royal family and the Middletons with them being included in some events such as Ascot. Its obvious that the royal family likes and approves of the Middletons and in my book that's a honor in itself.

I do think it's possible that either Mr. Middleton or Mrs. Middleton could receive an award for their success in their business and contribution to childrens charities. I'm not ruilng it out.

I just love that article from Pippa. It tells you so much about her love of food, her experience in cooking and entertaining. This is the kind of stuff you can't get from the tabloids, who pretty much focus on her love life and her butt.

There's so much more to Pippa and her family than what you've might have read all these years and I'm glad that we are getting to know The Duchess of Cambridge's family.

I enjoyed the article on Pippa, as well. I think Pippa's gotten a lot of unfair criticism since her sister married into the royal family, with the media turning her into a very one dimensional person, (the one dimension, of course, being the one that suits their own purposes). It's nice to get a more nuanced picture.

I´d like very much to know which contribution to charities you are talking about because I may be missing something. For someone to receive a title I suppose it is required a lifelong dedication to a cause, and there are so many outstanding people before ths Middletons who will never be awarded.

Btw, the reviews about Pippa´s book are very telling, a waste of paper that is selling half the original price and will be soon forgotten at the back of the shelves. She would never even have written it if she were not who she is.

That's right. A publisher thought it would make him money - offered her a deal and because the content is directly linked to her/her parents business, she accepted. She would NOT have written it if it was not directly linked to her business. Well done! For once I agree, but I am positive about it. You need to lighten up.

I think the Middltons will receive a title. It may not happen under QE2, but it because they will be the grandparents of a future monarch

And how does that deserve them being given a title?

Well for starters, the Middletons through their business Party Pieces has been supporting the Starlight Foundation for years. Kate was involved with that charity before she even got engaged to William.

Party Pieces | Starlight Children's Foundation

^^Ok, that´s new for me. But very different from what I consider doing charity. It is more than donating.

I don't know that I'd actually call it just donating. Perhaps along with donating the festive supplies for these children's parties, they have been active in the set up and helping at the parties also. We don't really know. We do know that the Starlight Foundation has had various events over the years which to my knowledge both William and Kate have participated in. In fact, I think that was one of the gala events they both attended right after they got engaged.

It may not matter. PoW may assist in how history will view his grandchilden's lineage. It is unlikely, in most instances, that there will be a footnote that Lord & Lady Middleton were commoners when he/she was born. Charles may see to it.

I really don't see Charles doing that at all. Nor do I ever see Charles giving titles to his step children. I don't believe either that the Middletons or Tom and Laura give a flying fig if they're given titles or not.

Charles may be prim and proper and traditional but he's not a priggish nor snobbish man.

The Middletons will not receive any titles IMO. I like this family but it is not the British way and frankly, I don't think the Duchess of Cambridge would want her family to have titles of any kind.

Being awarded a peerage (life peerage only is available now) will not change the lineage of one's grandchildren. And that is the key point. Why award a peerage to someone, or a knighthood, when it dies with them and doesn't change history?

The Middleton's strike me as sensible people - they enjoy the fruits of their labour and why not? They also strike me as reasonable, grounded people that William likes and respects and that has drawn in the more senior royals. The press and others may have a grudge against them for having a daughter who has risen above "her station" but I think that they will continue to socialise with the BRF and that no honour will be awarded.
Frankly, they don't need it.

Would either of them be eligible for those honors given for personal service to the Sovereign?

Sigh. Discussions like this are always how you can tell it's been a slow news week.

Tom can inherit his title. Laura's husband too (less possible).
